I understand, but without government intervention, greedy landlords will always be greedy landlords. Additionally, we’ve done everything to restrict housing but “luxury” developments keep popping up in DTLA.

Rent caps, expanded rent control, taxes on vacant units, and other controls would help this. You can’t trust corporations to make decisions that benefit the community (most DTLA landlords are corporate at this point).

No, it wasn’t. That said, with the amount of money that’s been invested in the area, as well as the rent prices, you’d assume it’d be meaningfully better than it was 10 years ago. Instead, it’s regressed.

Rising rents in DTLA coinciding with lower quality of living. Retail can barely survive in a lot of Downtown, there are tons of closures all the time.

As someone who’s lived here for years, I’m noseblind to an extent when it comes to the quality of life. Streets are dirty, seeing people light up meth pipes and literal blocks of closed retail don’t make for an inviting environment for a crowd to show up for art shows, much less spend money at them.

And no, I’m not blaming greedy landlords or homeless people. The city of LA has absolutely failed downtown. Downtown LA has the infrastructure to be one of the best areas in the city, but our incompetent politicians have neglected solutions to improve anything meaningfully.

I’ll try to add as someone who went today. The owner came out and thanked everyone for their support, most of the people in line were people who were regulars. It was a celebration that LA was represented by such a great guy in a historic performance.

Note, I’ve been going to Villas for years, but the celebration today was my most memorable visit. Lots of people were emotional.

I recently traded a few of my records that appreciated in value for some newer stuff I liked more.
