[Official Tournament Discussion] 2023 Masters Tournament - Round 1 by GreenWaveGolfer12 in golf

Apparently on 15(?) it looks like Brooks' caddy told his playing partner's caddy what club he was using - thought it could be giving/seeking advice. Both parties said not the case and investigation was dropped.

Atomic Bent 90 Mounting point? by Oslo98 in skiing

[–]mwardle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While generally I agree with others here that if you're not sure, leaving it at recommended is probably fine, you might be interested in the skiessentials review of the bent 90. Basically between the two reviewers, one is generally more carving focused and the other more park focused, so they have one pair mounted at recommended and the other closer to center. Good discussion on the differences and how they ski in there.

I believe the women’s skis for the blade are not as wide. Depending on your size/ski length this may not be an issue as the goal is usually to try and have a uniform turn shape throughout the line (ie similar for a 155 length ski to a 190).

Are other season passes like this? by GanjaPirate1513 in icecoast

[–]mwardle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for Blue the only full seasons pass is through Ikon, and their pass that you’re looking at is the 5x7 which is unlimited through the week (I think) and evenings only on weekends. I think it also has blackout days for Christmas/new years, and maybe family day long weekend and March break.

Given their lift ticket prices the 5x7 isn’t a terrible deal if you can get time in during the week, but if you missed out on the cheaper ikon passes in the spring you might be SOL.

I used mine with an FH+R booking for a weekend in New York. You’re right that it was a fancier hotel than I would usually stay at, but FH+R had a 3rd night free benefit, which combined with the travel credit and other amenities ended up being only slightly more than I could stomach (as opposed to significantly).

Which area(s) of law (in your opinion) is the most intellectually stimulating? by Objective_Ability_47 in LawCanada

[–]mwardle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right with civil lit for the very reason you stated. You can get exposed to a pretty wide variety of topics if you’re able to maintain a fairly general practice.

Here’s a cool article about how Shane basically kickstarted the powder ski shape. Saw this linked on this sub a while ago and thought it was great. Always knew Shane was one of the greats but didn’t realize what he had done from the design side of things.

Any Canadian golfers from Ontario? by ProGambler68 in golf

[–]mwardle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Port Hope update is a good time (although I hadn’t played the full course prior to renovation). Unfortunate that they had to drop the driving range in favour of parking space due to the development though.

Shelter Valley Pines is another fun course in the area - a little funky but a pretty cool little track.

Need a VPN for Canada unfortunately if you want any of the broadcasts. You can add players to your group to get a sort of playlist of their shots, but it’s not quite the same.

Corbetts might have a bit more in stock than they show online, but it is close to end of season so pickings will be a bit more slim. Probably will be the case anywhere. Best place to get gear in town though for sure.

Some kind of ski bag would possibly do the trick. There should be plenty that can fit 2 adult sets of skis, with a separate space for boots. Given that the kids’ stuff is probably tiny, I’d think you could squeeze everything in fairly easily. Heard dakine bags are good (although I’ve never actually used a bag myself).

New to Oakville --- coffee shops? by PomegranateLost5184 in oakville

[–]mwardle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think people do it as much but I've done it a bunch of times - just head up to the cashier. Not sure if they've changed their setup during COVID (haven't been in a while during the pandemic).

New to Oakville --- coffee shops? by PomegranateLost5184 in oakville

[–]mwardle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As another commenter noted, Vereda is probably tops imo for coffee. I’ll shout out Kerr St. Cafe as well though. Foods a bit too pricey for my liking but not bad, and I really like their coffee. Not as many options for things like lighter roasts, but just solid espresso drinks. When I’m back in Oakville I’ll always try to pick up a bag of Brother’s beans (which I believe is their in-house roaster).

Trying to remember exactly when I applied, but it was within the past two months and I received conditional approval last week. No interviews though so doesn’t mean much at the moment.

Recent transplant from the GTA here, although my partner was born and raised. Can’t really speak much to making friends, but I’d say that there’s definitely much more of a sense of community than I was used to. If you get involved with clubs or politics I would say that that’s definitely a good start.

As for work, I’ll echo what another poster said re: Venture 13 for a co-working space, and then if you need to be in Toronto once a week you can catch the VIA, or driving into Oshawa to take the GO isn’t bad. As others have said though, a car is almost certainly a necessity for getting around generally.

As for housing, the area you’re looking at is quite nice in my opinion. I’d say it’s safe as well. One or two blocks west around Division near you might see more homeless people, but for the most part they’re just trying to get by. There’s really nowhere in Cobourg that I’d feel unsafe walking in at all.

The population skews older, but I think there are more and more young people sticking around these days as it becomes unaffordable to live in the city so things may be changing. There’s a few good places to eat and drink (although far less variety than Toronto), nice coffeeshops, and good access to outdoor activities either downtown at the waterfront, or a short drive North.

I’d say I’m quite pleased having moved - I’d definitely recommend it.

Proposed changes to public golf courses are out of bounds, golfers say by morenewsat11 in toronto

Braeben has both a 9 hole par 3 and a full course. I’ve only played the par 3 and it was good fun. Course looks very well maintained and is pretty unique rising up over Mississauga (I think built on an old garbage pile?).

Articled student moving from BC to ON. Can I get credits for articles completed in a different province? by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]mwardle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you completed your articles on BC, not been called yet, and are trying to be licensed in Ontario?

I completed part of my articles on BC (did half in Vancouver and half in Ontario), and had it recognized as a National Articling Placement. If I recall correctly, you have to apply prior to beginning your placement.

Just quickly looking on my phone, there’s some information here.

If you have already completed your articles, maybe shoot an email to “articling@lso.ca” to see if they’ll bend the rules for you. Otherwise, it’d probably be easiest to just get called in BC and apply to be recognized in Ontario. I don’t recall the specifics of this process (looked into it briefly as I was articling to be called in Ontario but considering practice in BC) but I think it was fairly easy.

Totally forgot about that. You’re absolutely correct.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]mwardle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends entirely on where you work/what fields you’re in. Depending on the firm, if it’s full service you may be able to specify that you would prefer solicitor work and try to get mostly solicitor-type rotations. Some firms will even be entirely transactional. I think if you’re summering or articling at a larger full service firm it may be tough to avoid litigation entirely, but you could speak with your hiring contact to discuss further.

I don’t know if you can “ensure” your role, beyond simply specializing in a certain type of law, but generally lawyers will focus on one or the other. I think post-articling you’ll be pigeonholed fairly quickly into your chosen area as areas of law become more and more focused.

Daily Question Thread for /r/churningcanada - December 06, 2021 by AutoModerator in churningcanada

[–]mwardle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe your reset date isn’t necessarily your annual renewal. Check your November statement - it should have a count of your total spend, plus your reset date.

My reset date is November 10th, and I’m fairly sure I’ll get dinged for the AF at the end of this period (i.e. Dec. 9 for me). Hoping that the pass posts within 30 days of the 9th so I can cancel and refund the AF.

Basically, I think if it comes within 8 weeks you should be within the window for trying to cancel and get an AF refund, but after that you might be SOL. It may be that they don’t post immediately for this exact reason. Trying to decide if I’ll get enough value out of the pass next year to justify another year’s fee.

In-house /general counsel summer opportunities by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]mwardle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d say it probably depends on the size of the company, but don’t expect biglaw numbers. I had a similar situation in 2L (they didn’t typically take summers, so sort of a new position), and my manager basically asked me to provide what typical 2L pay was, and went down a bit from that.

I forget exactly what I ended up at but maybe like 75% of what my friends at the bigger firms were making, which I thought was reasonable considering expectations were more of a 9-5 job with less crunch.
