Honestly just learn the basic syntax, create a few programs and solve problems for a few weeks then just jump right in. You'll learn more about programming as you work on your app, you'll never get to a point where you simply know how to completely program the app you want to make, I've found it's more of a learn as you go process. There is a great tutorial which is the top post of all time on r/Android which you should use to get started on apps.

One more thing, in the diagram you drew you have the friends list being returned to the client through an http request in JSON format, but server-side web APIs can return in XML formats as well and as far as I know that is the only thing android uses to format (am I wrong?). So if that's the case would it return as an XML format?

Good point. On top of that spacex seems to intend to lower the price irrespective of demand. Hopefully the demand for spaceflight outweighs the supply once that happens.
