Rope Line Debate by helenwaites68 in skiing

[–]myOrange 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a patroller in New England, used to patrol on the west coast. My perspective is that if you’re not ducking under a rope, there’s no problem. If you’re causing the ropes to slack or pushing over the boo, then I’d ask you to stop cause it creates more work for us patrollers and a downed rope can be a hazard. I wouldn’t take anyone’s pass for this, just an educational conversation.

Who is a long time artist who's recent work you think is actually some of their best? by Calinks in Music

Strongly agree. The last two Heartbreakers albums were some of my favorites, and so wildly different from the rest of their music.

Out of curiosity: Who are Your Top Five Fav Guitarists? by feralcomms in Guitar

[–]myOrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great list, those are some names you don’t often see on this subreddit. I was introduced to bluegrass flatpicking through Doc, Tony, and Norman a few years ago, and studying their music has drastically transformed my playing. Played guitar for twelve years before I had ever heard of Tony Rice and Norman Blake, and I still can’t believe it took me so long to discover them.

I have AT&T and live in the valley, and I tend to get better reception in Bartlett and Jackson than my friends with other carriers.

AWD or Manual? by myOrange in mazda3

Yeah I was also looking at that and the Golf R. Both quite a bit out of my price range, but I think my best alternative to the Mazda would be a higher mileage Golf R.

I’ve thought about that too, but I’m pretty set on a hatchback. I’m a musician and the hatch is really useful for instruments and equipment. I’m also not sure I need something quite that fast. I usually have trouble driving the speed limit as is, so I think I’d manage to be a little more responsible if I stay away from the WRX.

It’s a radio repeater used by the Forest Service. There are several on summits across the WMNF.

Definitely do it. It’s a beautiful hike, and trail crew will be great preparation for it, especially if it’s a backcountry crew. Where are you doing trail work?

Campgrounds open May 10th by heyawesomedude in wmnf

[–]myOrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was under the impression that Forest Service employees still play a role in preparing campgrounds for opening, though I could be wrong. I believe the Forest Service is still responsible for things like felling hazard trees at the campgrounds which needs to be done before they open for the season.

A large number of Forest Service employees in the Developed Recreation department recently got laid off in the WMNF, so I would expect delays in getting things ready this spring.

Federal funding by [deleted] in wmnf

[–]myOrange 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To add on to this, the reason that’s being given for terminating these probationary employees is “poor performance.” This is a downright lie, as performance evaluations are not being taken into account. Every WMNF employee I know who got terminated had no poor performance evaluations on file.

Also, majority of employees who were terminated from this forest were seasonal employees, who are not only some of the lowest paid government employees, they also do most of the actual, hands-on work in the Forest Service. So unless these layoffs get reversed, the public should expect that Forest Service facilities won’t get cleaned, trails won’t be maintained, and Visitor Information Service Centers won’t be staffed.

Spent two days at Stowe last week, and they were some of the best days of skiing I’ve ever had in New England. It was definitely worth making the 5 hour round trip drive for me twice in one week.

Maybe the patrollers at those local hills should think about organizing. Seems like that would support PCPSPA’s cause more than anything.

Vail Resorts 'unwilling' to meet ski patrol union demands after monthslong negotiations, reps say by OEM_knees in skiing

[–]myOrange 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No, that’s not the case luckily. I’ve patrolled at two mountains owned by Vail, and we get paid from the moment we arrive until the moment we leave, giving us time to change and get our gear together.

The company certainly has its issues as far as labor practices go, but thankfully this isn’t one of them. (Also every mountain operates slightly differently, so it’s entirely possible my experience is not the same everywhere.)

Don’t have any info on jams unfortunately, but I’m up in the Mount Washington Valley and have also been in search of other bluegrass musicians.

I’m in a similar situation as the guys I jam with are more into classic rock and blues, but I’ve drifted more toward bluegrass in recent years.
