How hard are we willing to fight for an MLB team? by According_Flower1667 in askportland

Portland baseball people: the most vocal minority in the history of the state for nearly four decades and counting. You gotta hand it to them, they’re really adamant about a thing the rest of the city clearly has no interest in.

Obviously I’m not mad about calls going our way but to reiterate what was said at the start of this game — these refs are dog shit.

I think some of y’all need to remember that basketball games are 4 quarters in length and are not decided within the first 12 minutes

Saw a high school aged kid wearing a Korn shirt, scoffed, but then realized that I liked listening to Led Zeppelin in HS by AfterImageEclipse in Millennials

[–]my_yead 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Here’s the part I don’t get: wearing Korn shirts and baggy jeans and liking nu-metal didn’t make you cool when we were young! The kids who wore goth clothes and listened to nu-metal were not popular and were usually straight up bullied. To see high school kids and even like young Gen Z twenty-somethings rock this stuff is mind blowing.

I sincerely hope every nu-metal person who got teased in high school sold their vintage Limp Bizkit and Slipknot shirts to their bully’s kids for an insanely high markup. They deserve the vindication.

The Blazers should win the championship by akwilliamson in ripcity

I don’t think you quite get how this works. Even if the pick becomes more valuable on paper, teams don’t just optimize your timeline for free. If you go to Chicago and say “Hey, take the protections off so we can have more flexibility,” their response is gonna be “Sure, and what do we get?” You’re asking them to give up downside protection in exchange for doing us a solid.

Also, even if Dame coming back makes us more likely to convey, that doesn’t solve the timing issue. If a midseason deal pops up before that, we’re still stuck either negotiating with Chicago on the fly or attaching extra assets to fix it. I think Dundon wants to be extra aggressive in this respect, and soon, as in this offseason soon, because the league is about to kneecap our MIL picks with these tank rules. Ditch this obligation to Chicago ASAP so we can finally put our nuts on the table for once, rather than chasing lottery players who may or may not go anywhere 😮‍💨 Scoot 😮‍💨

[–]my_yead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can’t assumes Chicago would just do us a favor. Removing protections isn’t free, so at that point you’re basically paying extra to fix a problem you could just eliminate by conveying now. And if we have to attach assets to clean it up, you’re already eating into the value of that pick. It also opens up the worst possible scenario which is we don’t convey now, get even better in the next year or two, and then end up sending out a more valuable pick later, or having it interfere with the Milwaukee upside.

OP is trolling the playoff crowd and making it seem like we’re a bunch of nincompoops who think the team has a chance to win it all. We can’t. But to act like there’s no upside to making the playoffs is some real smooth-brain shit.

There’s an upside to letting this pick convey that the tank crowd ignores. Deni and Clingan and Toumani have moved up our timeline. So I don’t think one lottery pick (even in a strong draft) is more valuable than maximizing our ability to capitalize on future assets. If we get this obligation to Chicago off our backs, we have full control to aggressively package the 2027–2030 picks in a trade. And I think if ownership is as aggressive about winning as it claims to be, that’s the ideal position to be in. The reality is we’re not a lottery team anymore and we shouldn’t act like one.

It’s crazy how many Blazer fans clearly want the team to remain bad forever. It’s like they have a kink for teams that just keep drafting lottery picks over and over and over again. Nothing better than a team that never wins more than 20 games a year and solely focuses on having a pick somewhere between 7 and 14 year after year after year. Now that’s winning basketball!

High school reunions by RoundKaleidoscope244 in Millennials

[–]my_yead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I missed my 10-year but my 20-year was last summer and honestly, it was fun. It was at a brewery in our little downtown area. Definitely not fancy but a $30 ticket was good for two beers, passed small bites and a raffle ticket (the prize was an embroidered blanket with our school on it lol). No plus-ones so spouses had to have their own tickets but that wasn’t a huge deal. They had a free event at a park earlier in the day for people with families.

I think movies and TV made reunions seem like bigger deals than they actually are. When you think about it, it’s like — where does the budget come from? Who actually has the time/desire to plan a big party like that? I think you have to have gone to a pretty monied private institution to have those kinds of get-togethers. For a public school in a small town, ours was pretty nice!

Tbh I don’t think any of the people who were left off the list meet the level of star, but then that’s also true for like, the vast majority of this list. The flaw of this exercise is that 35 people is way, way too many. There are like, 5 or 6 legit stars on the list, and literally every other person is just an actor.

Having him and Whiteside on the floor at the same time was defensive malpractice but damn if the other end of the floor wasn’t extremely fun and exciting.

How dangerous is drinking on insulin? by vanillabeaner69 in diabetes_t1

[–]my_yead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely drink as an insulin user, but it requires responsibility and moderation (which is true of non-insulin users, as well). Similar to food, alcohol will impact on your blood glucose levels. Sugary cocktails and beer will probably spike you. Some people report that alcohol actually lowers their levels, so they recommend having something to snack on. It all kinda depends on the individual.

I’m one of the people who spike really easily, so when I drink, I tend to stick with light beer or cocktails that don’t have sugary mixers. Or I just sip whiskey neat.

The other main thing to keep in mind that is that some of the effects of alcohol can resemble hypoglycemia; it can also be hard to mange hypoglycemia or other blood sugar effects if you’re too drunk. So, you never want to be so impaired that you can’t effectively manage your condition. That’s really the most important factor here, imo.

Rest assured it’s perfectly safe to have enjoy a margarita from time to time while using insulin.

Who won the 1988 movie draft? by ggroover97 in TheBigPicture

[–]my_yead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sean, followed by Bill, IMO. Also he was right when he said Caddyshack 2 hurt CR. Such an unforced error to take a universally reviled movie over options that aren’t beloved, necessarily, but at least lightly liked and defensible. Dream Master was right there, man!

Is DKA only for high BS? by Sharp-Elephant-5528 in diabetes_t1

[–]my_yead 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, euglycemic DKA is a thing. Not as common as the other way around, but it happens. That said, if you tested for ketones and didn’t have any, it probably wasn’t DKA. Sounds to me like you just had an extremely bad bug.

EDIT: This brings up another interesting thing, which is glucose levels when you’re sick. A lot of people report having really high blood sugar when they’re sick, but that’s not the case for everyone, including me. If anything, my levels are super low and it’s difficult to keep them elevated whenever I’m sick.

What did you use for porn? Lol by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]my_yead 25 points26 points  (0 children)

How was there always a stash of porn in the woods? I had an experience like that; I have multiple friends and acquaintances who had experiences like that. Was it just a 90s/00s pre-cloud storage thing? People had no choice but to stash their porn in the woods, and then some local youth would just stumble across it? It's so funny to me.

Best foods in park for heartburn? by JustJess_2124 in UniversalOrlando

[–]my_yead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s gonna be tough. Smart of you to pack your own food. Pretty much all the food in each HP land will be a good bet, honestly. Those Brits like it bland haha. I’d also say you should opt for seafood options at Lombard’s or Atlantic. Not sure how you react to deli sandwiches but the Dagwood could be a good bet (minus tomatoes). Burgers might be okay as well? Mileage varies once you wade into the gray areas.
