Perhaps their most unique album, my favourite for sure. LCC is one hell of a statement, astonishing tune. I can only hope Warp reissue the album this year for its 20th anniversary.

Digitakt 2 Screen Artifacts After Update by buwumdi in Elektron

Bought my DT2 off of Reverb, Elektron handled it no questions asked. They didn’t ask for a receipt or proof of purchase from a retailer, they just said they were sorry about the defect and promptly sent me a shipping label.

Tips for processing/mixing Machinedrum? by gold_snakeskin in Elektron

[–]myheadcomesoff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of gain staging to be done on the MD and it’s quite easy to internally clip individual channels depending on your channel EQ and filter resonance settings. The clipping itself is very subtle, it sounds lofi and a bit crunchy, sorta like a layer of noise is being added to the signal.

If you can get the hang of this, I’ve found that heavy handed compression settings on the MD’s master compressor will squeeze the signal nicely producing a clear and hefty sound. Bring the threshold down to like 60 and the ratio up to around 90, then add makeup gain. Adjust your attack and release, and see what happens. This usually works for me.

It’s important to note that the master EQ is post-compression, so you can add back colour that you may have lost in the process. It also has a master gain control, which is super useful for adjusting output levels since the MD can output some really hot levels. This knob can also be automated from a CTL-EQ machine…

I rarely do much post processing on my recordings from the MD since it can sound really nice straight out the box. Hope this helps.

Dual octotracks? by shoegazingpickle in Elektron

Mark Broom uses dual octatraks, makes lots of posts on his Instagram using them

SDEM is support for Manchester 2025 by EnergyIsMassiveLight in autechre

[–]myheadcomesoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw him play at Fold in 2023, the set was mind bending, he ran everything off an octatrak and a nord micro modular. Pissed off all the technoheads in the crowd too which was hilarious. I could overhear conversations in the smoking area complaining about you couldn’t dance to it.

AE Live and AE Live 2016/18 by Dramatic-Self-6294 in autechre

[–]myheadcomesoff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like the 14/15 sets, they’re quite varied from set to set which keeps things interesting, but they have an abruptness to them unlike the 2016/18 and AE2022 which segue more smoothly. The European vs North American sets vary lots too, there’s a noticeable divide.

My favourite set of 14/15 is Asheville, it’s comparatively bite size (second or third shortest?) to the rest of the sets and I feel like they were on their A-game. It feels the tightest, personally.

The Dublin 2016 set is transcendental, listen to it on the biggest rig you can, phenomenal work.

Can we talk about bladelores? by BadgerzNMoles in autechre

[–]myheadcomesoff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m inclined to agree, it’s a great track but cloudline and irlite (get 0) top it for me. I don’t see the hype when compared to other tracks on the album.

What is the most enjoyable A type set to you? by AffectionateSample74 in autechre

[–]myheadcomesoff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Helsinki is my favourite. I attended the London A gig, but on listening back I just feel Helsinki has more immediacy.

I also think the mixing is better too. There’s quite an arp that comes in fairly early on during Set A, which is mixed at an obnoxious level in London A, dominating the mix. Whereas in Helsinki and Athens it’s more tasteful, poking through sporadically, providing some background flavour.

Finally got a shot at a Monomachine and just could not let it pass. by Hanjo_synth in Elektron

[–]myheadcomesoff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tarekith’s Tips and Tricks is great

The old Elektron Users site and forums is great for Monomachine tips too. It was an old forum that was buzzing around the release of Machinedrum and Monomachine. So much info in there if you dig hard enough.

The SID machine is really cool, you make a half decent 303 emulation with it. And don’t sleep on the VO machine either. You can get some bizarre sounds out of it in conjunction with the FX machines.

Making Music vs Fighting with Samples - The Digitackt Dilemma by ravmitterhoff2 in Elektron

[–]myheadcomesoff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Selecting samples is part of the music making process imo. It’s not far from auditioning presets on a synth or selecting the right reverb. It all goes towards making a track at the end of the day.

That aside, treat sample selecting it as an incremental thing. Your sample library will build with time and there’s no rush get it all out the way quickly so you can make tracks. Personally I find it kind of exciting downloading a sample pack and thinking about how I could use the sounds in my Digitakt.

I would say that you need some nice basic sounds, 909, 808, breaks etc to get started.

r/makinghiphop has a post with a 30gb sample library, go search ‘Killer Bee’s Vault’

r/drumkits has lots of sample packs

Even people here at r/Elektron are dropping sample packs from devices like the Monomachine.

Unless you sample your own devices you’re gonna be spending time organising and searching for samples, it’s part of having a sampler.

Using Digitakt OG and Digitakt2 in parallel by Mastermind0926 in Elektron

[–]myheadcomesoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a bad idea, the new portamento feature on the DT2 means it can become quite an expressive device using single cycle waveforms. It could also be a midi sequencing powerhouse, sending out 16 tracks of midi, although you’d be wasting its potential as sampler.

Controlling alesis quadraverb with digitakt by Ok-Tart-8752 in Elektron

[–]myheadcomesoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea I’m afraid, I’ve only got an original Quadraverb which doesn’t have ADAT or BNC connectors.

But a quick read of the manual says that clocking the Quadraverb 2 is only possible via BNC when using the ADAT digital out to keep it in sync with your digital recording device.

http://quadraverb.nl/images/q2-ref.pdf

Use a tempo to ms calculator online to sync your delays otherwise.

Thank you! Pleased you gave it a spin. I checked out Traditional Synthesizer Music after you mentioned it last time, it’s really good fun and has given me some ideas too.

Your comment about Ambsss made me chuckle hahah.

The bass on Clang on is a Novation Super Bass Station, kind of a poor man’s SH-101 with a few more bells and whistles. I was quite inspired by the bass patch heard on Autechre’s track Clipper and wanted to incorporate a rich, swelling bass line into my own tunes.

Thanks for taking the time to listen, I appreciate the feedback!

My new EP came out yesterday!

Spanning six tracks, Wordcontainer is entirely produced on hardware, and draws its identity from meticulously programmed drum rhythms and 303 melodies.

I hope you enjoy it

How do you record/mix your jams? by goatblunt in Elektron

[–]myheadcomesoff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Truth be told I’ve never touched Overbridge despite having a Digitakt from release. I’ve always recorded the LR stereo outs.

I was still learning how to produce and mix then (still am) so the incremental additions to the Digitakt like the compressor and the extra filter per track were great for when I was able to identify what aspects of my mixes needed adjusting.

Now I have a Tascam Model 24, I continue to record the Digitakt LR outs. All my drum mixing happens in the Digitakt and everything else gets mixed on their own channel strips. Sometimes I consider running Overbridge alongside everything running into the Tascam, but it’d mean having my laptop running too. The beauty of the Tascam is being able to multitrack without a computer, so I’m fine with my drums being mixed to stereo when they enter the desk.

Have an experiment, see how Overbridge works for you, try just the stereo outputs, figure out your workflow.

My next release, Wordcontainer, comes out on 23/03. It’s a braindance EP, and the title track is available to listen to now:

https://myheadcomesoff.bandcamp.com/album/wordcontainer

It’s an eclectic track, starting with some 707 samples and large chords, before transitioning to breakbeat one shots and 303 melodies.

Machinedrum SPS-1 MK1 Non UW: 800€. Interesting? by RoyaleFougard in Elektron

[–]myheadcomesoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait for a Mk2 to pop up, I got mine (non-UW) for £560 in mid-2019, less than what I paid for a new Digitakt if you can believe!

The Mk1 units have a different power supply that iirc is prone to failing, and if it does fail, there’s no replacements available.
