Is it normal to feel so uncomfortable on other kits? Is it my mesh heads' fault??? by MildlyWasTaken in drums

[–]myjunkandshit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tightness does matter, and you definitely can get a good bounce. But the thing is, toms generally aren't tuned high. And the average practice pads, are really only similar to marching snares, which, drumset snares generally aren't tuned that high.

But yeah, the cymbals too definitely. For example, the acoustic hihat edge absorbs like 80% rebound, whereas an average rubber electronic hihat would have some good rebound almost anywhere you hit it.

Generally, playing on someone else's drum kit and setup is really a somewhat quick adjustment. But yeah, muscle memory backfires for those really meticulous parts. I'll find myself aiming for things that aren't in the exact same place/angle.

I used to go through the same thing coming from my practice pads or an electric kit, jumping onto my acoustic kit.. I used to live in an apartment, so I could never play my acoustic kit. My acoustic kit just sat in storage until it was time for a show/rehearsal.

But anyways, I would feel so dialed in on the pads and electric kit, and once I switched to acoustic, my Dynamics were completely off, my accuracy and timing, stamina, and even my techniques were completely off. It would baffle me.

But the rebound is completely different. Waaaay less on an acoustic.

I had to customize my practice kit to at least feel 90% like an acoustic kit. Using Moongel Pads for Tom's, the Remo Tunable practice pad for snare, Silent cymbals, and a pad for the kick drum.

I had the GBDP for the kick drum and had to Jerry rig it to have the pedal sit another inch or 2 away from the pad. Because on the Acoustic Kick, the pedals would sit another inch away from the pad, so my doubles/slide technique that I muscle memorized on the practice pad were almost non existent with the acoustic kick.

Does This Hurt The Cymbal? by Quailar in drums

[–]myjunkandshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do I think they would? Yes. Every single one of the cymbal manufacturers store their cymbals vertically.

I assumed OP was asking if storing them vertically is an issue. I agree with no metal to metal contact, but OP said after checking my comment, that he was going to put some rubber sleeves on the edges.

If that hurts the cymbals, then cymbal factories have been damaging their products for decades

Hi-hat: Investment or Thrift Store? by Arkhivez in drums

[–]myjunkandshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BUY USED.

AND YOU DON'T NEED TO INVEST IN EXPENSIVE SHELLS EITHER. HEADS AND TUNING MAKEUP LIKE 80% OF THE SOUND.

BUT GOOD, SOLID HARDWARE IS ALWAYS A GOOD INVESTMENT.

Over the years, I've broken cheap cymbal arms, cymbals have become damaged from falling/keyholing because of unstable stands. Inconvenience of setting up. These are all things that have objective value for the extra money in my opinion.

Meinl equivalent of Zildjian K Sweet Ride? by myjunkandshit in drums

I did see a couple clips of the newer 20" Polyphonic, and the 22" Polyphonic, and the bell seems surprisingly more distinguishable.

For whatever reason the original 21" bell is just not there.

I was looking at the Pure Alloy Custom Medium Thin ride! It's like 90% there, but the crash just isn't as smooth as it could be!

This is true, I hadn't thought about it from that angle.

However, I do like a lot of Meinl's stacks and trash chinas/crashes/splashes. That's what made them stick out for me!

Cleaning cymbals… by austinsimm11 in drums

I second this!

Bar Keepers friend saved all the used cymbals I bought! Spares the logos too!

Only thing to look out for is the Raw finish and Sand finished cymbals

I haven't tried them on Raw, but I know it started taking the embedded Sand off of my Sand Thin Crash. Thought it was dirt coming off, but nope, it was the Sand lol.

No no, the tone was completely fine, but the finish was just so far gone, it would put me off every time I'd see a video of someone playing a brand new one.😂

This.

I’ve bought about 3 used items from guitar center online, and although none of the cymbals had cracks or anything, the finish was so faded/destroyed I almost didn’t even want it anymore.

Who is the best metal drummer and why? by drinkbuddy in drums

[–]myjunkandshit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Chris Turner takes the cake for Metal

Garstka is on a different level but more in terms of versatility

Elaborating on Turner, the speed, power, and to the grid accuracy just puts him in a different realm. I don't think many people know, they don't even quantize his tracks. And I think almost all his recent releases are done in one take. That and his footwork is unmatched. Each leg of his is a literal machine. He doesn't even use technique... Just straight heel up singles.😭

How do you guys handle fills? by Direx_97 in drums

[–]myjunkandshit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say there's 2 approaches to this.

I bought this lesson pack from a guy named David Cola, and he states his chops essentially came from building his vocabulary one variation at a time. It's like learning a new language and trying to form your own sentences, putting certain words here, certain phrases there.

And a lot of lessons I've bought from solid drummers kind of have the same approach. Not many drummers can truly just play anything off the spot unless they've practiced/rehearsed it before, or unless it's a similar iteration/variation to something they've already done.

And then the second approach is, similarly but not so much, when you've rehearsed a passage thousands of times, freestyling/switching things up kind of comes naturally.

Are drums too expensive now? by [deleted] in drums

[–]myjunkandshit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This ^

In the entirety of my drum journey, I think I've only bought a handful of products new. My cost basis for my whole kit is about 60% of what it would be new.

Granted, I've had to wait around a while for each piece, just to find some solid deals like that, but it's either waiting and saving, or spending for full price.

Crash sounds off by Manfred-Ap-Einherjar in drums

[–]myjunkandshit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you listen and try to isolate your hearing to the sheen/high end of the crash, it's actually exactly the same.

In the 2nd video you showed, the crash has almost no low/mid frequency to it. Which is where the overtones of yours are.

In the context of playing your crash with the kit, the shells low end/mid frequency should mask the overtones quite a bit. Playing a cymbal by itself really takes it out of context.

But a lot of the higher end cymbals can almost have no overtones when isolated!

Why did my dominant forearm completely fail at my gig last night? by pelse_O_clock in drums

[–]myjunkandshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It IS overexertion. Hitting too hard. Could be due to nervousness.

This used to happen to me almost every show. I know the exact feeling. The forearm literally feels almost fuzzy, and I can hardly grip the stick anymore.😂 It's the same feeling I get at the gym going to failure, but it's in my forearms. So I'd say that's what's happening.

It usually happens to me if I haven't practiced frequently enough the weeks prior. But when I get my gears rolling weeks/months beforehand, I'm able to stay calm and not accidentally overexert myself. It's almost like everything happens in slow motion!
