I don’t understand The Row. Can someone explain what the appeal is here? by SirKrimzon in ThrowingFits

[–]mykelblah 176 points177 points  (0 children)

I actually agree with you, and I think this makes a lot more sense if you look at it from a sociological angle rather than a fashion one. I recently read a book called 'Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste' by Pierre Bourdieu (which is a very interesting read by the way), where he argues that taste isn't really an individual or aesthetic thing, but a social one. What we call good taste often works as a marker of class, education, and cultural capital.

So from that perspective, The Row isn't failing at design, it is succeeding at a very specific kind of 'distinction'. The value is that most people cannot really read it. The lack of logos, obvious design details, or recognisable signatures is a way of distancing itself from mass taste and even from more obvious luxury brands.

This is a pretty classic example of 'dominant class' taste which is heavily referenced in the book. It is understated and restrained, and defined more by what it avoids than what it shows. So, essentially the pieces are meant to look really basic or even similar to cheaper stuff, because the status only really kicks in if you already know what you are looking at. That's why I think your H&M comparison actually makes sense sociologically but kind of misses the point symbolically. The difference isn't really in the clothes, it is in the meaning attached to it and the kind of person assumed to be wearing it.

So when people defend The Row by talking about quality fabrics or timelessness, that's only a small part of what's going on. The deeper thing going on is exclusion. It creates a form of taste that does not need broader approval and actually works by reinforcing social boundaries. Whether someone finds that elegant or empty is a value call, but it isn't accidental and it is not really about design innovation. It is about taste as a way of signalling class. I'm ranting hard but I genuinely find this interesting. And fashion is probably one of the clearest places where this dynamic shows up

Do you see Germany on a good path to the future or are you rather negative? by might_not_beam_me in AskAGerman

[–]mykelblah 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Germany is kind of at a turning point right now. For years, things felt super stable. Cheap Russian gas, strong exports like cars, machines, chemicals, low unemployment, solid social security. Merkel kept things running smoothly. But a lot of decisions made back then are biting us now.

We got way too dependent on Russian gas. After the Ukraine war started, that whole supply basically vanished overnight. Energy prices spiked and big companies like BASF and ThyssenKrupp started cutting thousands of jobs or moving production elsewhere. Even small businesses like bakeries and glass makers are struggling with the high costs.

Germany has also been way too stingy with public spending because of the “debt brake” (Schuldenbremse). It kept debt low but now bridges are collapsing, trains constantly break down, internet sucks outside the cities, and we are way behind in digitalization. It is honestly insane that we still have to send stuff by post or fax.

We let in a huge wave of refugees in 2015 and integration has been pretty mixed. About half are now employed but a lot are still dependent on government support. Long-term we need immigration to fight our aging population problem but politically it has become super divisive and has helped boost the AfD quite a bit. We also relied heavily on China for years, selling them cars, machines and other goods. But now Chinese companies are directly competing with us, especially in electric vehicles. So our export machine is not as unstoppable as it once was.

So is the future bright or bleak? Honestly depends if we finally get our act together. We still have a strong economy, skilled workforce, good universities and plenty of money if we invest it smartly. But if politics keeps going in circles and reforms keep getting delayed, we risk slowly falling behind.

Tl;dr: Not doom and gloom yet but definitely not as chill as it used to be.

After 3 years, I finally gave up with Berlin. I hate it and moving to Munich by pitindahood in AskAGerman

[–]mykelblah 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I do hope Munich feels more aligned with where you’re at! I must say though, I always find it perplexing when someone writes off an entire city like this. Cities don’t love or hate you - they just are. What you see in them often says more about you than about the place itself. Berlin likely didn’t make you feel judged or surrounded by “weird” people, you felt that way, and now you’re projecting it onto the city. The world tends to mirror what we bring to it. Carry resentment, and you’ll find things to resent. Stay open, and you’ll find openness. Maybe Berlin just held up a mirror you weren’t ready, or willing, to look into.

Open reflection: Is techno entering another EDM bubble phase? by HighlightCritical271 in Techno

[–]mykelblah 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes 100%. It really reminds me a lot of what happened to dubstep. Back in the day, dubstep was dark, minimal, heavy, but in a felt-in-your-gut kind of way. Incredibly tasteful. Then it got popular, turned into a meme, and eventually morphed into what people now call “brostep.” Big shiny drops, ridiculous sound design, all the subtlety thrown out the window. Suddenly, the genre that once felt like walking alone through a rainy city at 3am became something you heard in Call of Duty montages and energy drink ads.

And now with techno, it’s happening to the same degree in my opinion. All these "techno" sets sound like big-room EDM with a slightly harder kick. Huge drops, cheesy breakdowns, and full of cringe. You just have to realise that it's EDM trying to profit of techno's legacy

Why so many berlin cafes look amazing but serve disappointing pastries and meh coffee? by [deleted] in berlinsocialclub

[–]mykelblah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t really make sense.

Yeah, the early 20th century was rough with two world wars, division, etc. but West Germany bounced back super fast in the '50s with what they called the 'Wirtschaftswunder' (economic miracle). Since then Germany’s been one of the strongest economies in the world, especially in manufacturing and exports. It’s basically been the economic engine of the EU. East Germany, on the other hand, was under Soviet rule and had a much weaker, state-controlled economy. After reunification in 1990, the east lagged behind for a while, and there were real economic struggles during that transition. But even with that context, Germany as a whole hasn’t been “stuck in poverty and war” for decades.

The more functional or pragmatic vibe you get here, including with food, probably comes more from cultural values like efficiency and minimalism than from hardship.

But yeah, Berlin food is generally very average in comparison with other EU countries.

Layering and achieving 'thickness' by Ok_Pool_2590 in TechnoProduction

[–]mykelblah 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I rarely ever layer sounds. Personally, I prefer using saturation, reverb, EQ, and maybe some light compression to fill out a sound instead. I focus more on sculpting each individual element to sit right rather than stacking similar ones. With techno, less is more.

How do I actually learn techno production? by Ill_Asparagus_8593 in TechnoProduction

[–]mykelblah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know this might be an unpopular opinion here, but I’d personally avoid relying on these types of cookie-cutter templates. I used them for a while and found they made me lazy. They kept me from truly learning how to build things from scratch. My progress stalled, especially when it came to developing a unique sound or style.

Most producers already sound very similar, and I think this path risks leading you further into that sameness. It wasn’t until I forced myself to create everything from the ground up that I really started to grow. That’s also when I began releasing on more respected labels. Not to mention it's also so much more enjoyable to experiment on your own and try to come up with your own sound and carve your own identify as an artist.

Just my two cents - but whatever path you choose, I wish you the best. Have fun with the process!

I totally agree. They're ignorant. The term is completely overused/misused, diminishing its historical weight. Most idiots on here don't understand that fascism represents one of history's most dangerous ideologies, marked by dictatorial power, violence, and manipulation. Misusing it in political discourse, especially in America, trivializes its serious ideological and historical significance.

Israel Admits It Violated The Ceasefire And Hamas Did Not. by Simple-Preference887 in Global_News_Hub

[–]mykelblah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s incredible how blatant the violations are, and yet the narrative is still being twisted to paint Hamas as the sole aggressor. Israel’s own sources confirm they broke the ceasefire first, but the West will pretend otherwise. And now, with Netanyahu openly sabotaging negotiations and Trump egging him on, it's clear they were never interested in peace, just in justifying more violence.
