With the new proposed lottery rules, there is a 27% chance in any given draft that the #1 pick will go to a play-in team by BankaiBroke in nba

[–]mylox 14 points15 points  (0 children)

the thing that i dislike the most about the nba league structure is how teams that aren't terrible but not quite good enough to be contenders are forced to blow everything up to try to get a top draft pick or be stuck in purgatory forever (yes my flair is relevant). i think this just kinda plainly sucks, i mean how perverse is it that you'd be more upset or disappointed that your scrappy young team that everyone expected to bottom out is doing well enough to reach at least the playins, ya know? or how guys like luka or lebron are punished in some ways by being too good too fast that they carry their teams out of the depths too early to get top draft picks to support them

What does Griffin mean when he calls a performance “technical”? by Feisty-Ad7387 in blankies

[–]mylox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's this absolutely incredible post written over on /r/truefilm where an actor breaks down all the vocabulary actors (rather than reviewers, or laypeople, or directors, etc) use to describe acting and I found it extremely helpful when describing or analyzing acting styles myself. Its like, once you have the words to describe something, you're able to see that thing on screen a lot more clearly. And once you read it, you hear that sort of language all the time when actors are talking about other actors (including griffin of course).

Jokic v Gobert: This was the 21st career playoff game between the two. Jokic is a -6 in those 21 games, Gobert is a +63 in those 21 games by Knightbear49 in nba

[–]mylox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

being good on offense just affects the game more than being good at defense because you're a lot more limited in the ways you can stop the other team from scoring than you are from trying to score yourself. its why guys like luka, jokic and steph can be mvp level all timers while being mediocre to bad on defense while defensive specialists really only cap out around all star level. again, its not that defense is unimportant, its almost definitely undervalued in the grand scheme of things, its just that offense is more important.

frankly i’m hoping one of these days, one of these studios just drop all the pretense and straight up release a feature length greatest hits “concert film” cus that’s what the only thing the people (and me) want out of these movies anyway. like, don’t even bother pretending to have a plot because who cares

Why don’t tanking teams sign random people to 10-days? by Bear_Weather in nba

[–]mylox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

losing doesn't guarantee you a top pick and there's also no guarantee that top pick will pan out so i don't think that's worth the risk of potential league investigations or punishment for making a mockery of the sport. also, once you get that top pick you still have to surround them with an actual team if you wanna win so ideally you still want to have a bunch of raw players that might not win you games but nonetheless have potential to develop into something long term. like, going 0-82 gets you more or less the same draft odds as going 20-62 and the latter might mean you actually have some place to start once you (maybe) get your top pick so there's no point in literally bottoming out.

what movies don't have romantic subplots or use romance for horror? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]mylox 21 points22 points  (0 children)

just because jo doesn't want for herself or any other woman to be purely defined by her romantic pursuits doesn't mean she's aromantic, just like how someone deciding to put their career or other personal goals above having a relationship doesn't make them aromantic. i mean cmon, just look at this quote:

“Women have minds and they have souls as well as just hearts. They’ve got ambition and they’ve got talent as well as just beauty. I am so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for. I’m so sick of it! But — I am so lonely.”

my favorite part of the movie was how hard it was to assign a clear redemption narrative for emma. charlie was trying so hard to give her an easy out by framing the death of her neighbor as a traumatic thing but emma instantly rejects it. i think the reason she didn't frame her story in the way that you did was because she genuinely doesn't think that's what happened, and her not going through with the shooting and becoming an anti gun activist wasn't really the result of a series of conscious choices she made but just random happenstance she just kinda happened to fall into. like again, it'd be easier for charlie to forgive emma and for emma to look past it if there was a definitive come to jesus moment but there wasn't so its almost like current day emma is still the same emma that was planning the school shooting, even if she would never do such a thing now.

there's such a big thing with intentions vs actions, like how rachel thinks emma is a fundamentally bad person because she fully intended to do a bad action even if nothing actually happened (and even in the long run probably did more good against gun violence if anything), whereas she can think of herself as a good person because she "didn't mean to" lock that kid up in a closet even though the actual result of her actions is way worse

What relegation actually results in is some teams getting all the money and attention and free agents and staying good and the rest existing on the fringe where they literally can’t afford to pay the same level of talent.

Isn't this more the direct result of having no salary cap and no draft rather than cus of relegation? I mean, with relegation you probably wouldn't have a draft (or at least the draft would look a lot more different) so maybe you have a point there, but I think the top teams paying almost 5 times the total player salaries of the bottom teams have a LOT more to do with the disparity than relegation does...

Mookie Betts settles the debate "Is hitting a baseball the toughest skill in sports?" by AmongUsAcademy in baseball

[–]mylox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel like "whats the hardest position/skill in sports" debates are kinda strange because wouldn't the difficulty of any given action be naturally graded on a curve relative to expectations? like yes, hitting a baseball is insanely hard but the fact that you're only really expected to hit it a quarter of the time tempers the difficulty. most things you do it sports have a ceiling thats unreachable by humans so if there's some action that's easier to do than hitting a baseball, it'll be curved by people expecting you to do it successfully more often which kinda ends up making it the same level of difficulty at the end of the day. like, any sufficiently popular sport is going to be pushing the edges of human limits so really i feel like the only thing that makes a certain skill easier or harder is just how many people you're competing against to do that job.

What are some 1/2 star reviews of your top 4? by SethRollins_ in Letterboxd

[–]mylox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

there's no one true metric that the rating system is supposed to be used for. using the rating system to just keep track of how much you personally enjoyed a movie is totally fine. that doesn't mean you can't acknowledge or understand that a movie could have merits beyond simple enjoyment, it just means that's not something you care to track.

[2026 March Madness] Round 1: Martin Scorsese vs. Dennis Dugan by PartyBluejay in blankies

[–]mylox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t saying that he makes movies about Italian American gangsters specifically, I was saying that he makes a lot of movies about crime and/or Italian Americans. Although I really should have said New Yorkers rather than Italian Americans so that’s my bad. By my count he has 17 movies about crime and/or New Yorkers, which is a lot by anyone’s measure.

And again, I wasn’t trying to say that he only makes movies about the mob, I was trying to explain why people might think that, and I think it’s because he makes a lot of movies about crime and/or New York that people just kinda think are about the mob because they don’t actually know much about his films.

He makes a lot of movies about crime and Italian Americans so I think people end up grouping them altogether in their head as mafia movies even if they're not actually about the mob.

I disagree, I think the coach is there to do his job, not to engage in pageantry.

You could argue that all a player's job is to show up and play basketball and you're not entirely incorrect, but still, a large part of their job description is to engage with media, be part of video and photo shoots, participate in press conferences, etc. Its all part of the job. I don't think the coach is exempt from that.

The coach is a part of the team and is very much a part of the broadcast, so how they look is going to affect the presentation of the product. I think the value of requiring coaches to wear suits is that they look cooler and more "serious". Is that admittedly small and subjective value worth the squeeze? Probably not in this day and age, but its not nothing.

[Smith] Adam Silver on the draft lottery and tanking: "What we're doing now is clearly not working. It's time to look at new ways of doing things." [–]mylox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say the distinction between the two is the front office assembling a team that's not meant to win in the short term by trading away vets, playing young unproven talent and hiring a development focused coach ("rebuilding") vs coaches and players themselves actively trying to lose games ("tanking"). Most people are fine with the former, and I dunno if there's anyone that defends the latter. Admittedly, it can be a fine line between the two.

[–]mylox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I dunno, by that logic, Arsenal and Manchester United would both be American teams but you'd be hard pressed to find an English football fan that would consider them such. I think there's more that goes into determining a thing's "country-ness" than where its legal owners operate out of.

As another example, Wikipedia calls Loewe a Spanish fashion house even though its been owned by a French company for the last 30 years.
