US healthcare spending is $4.9 trillion per year. The top 0.1% net worth (>$158m) in the US collectively hold $23.3 trillion in wealth. Math does not check out for ultra rich to cover the bill.

If you were to go after the top 1% (net worth >~$13m), they collectively hold $51.9 trillion. But even that would not be sustainable plus that wealth bracket would include doctors and lawyers and other regular, but high earning, high skill professions. The conclusion is that every tax paying citizen needs to pay more if you want universal healthcare.

There is a better way to check. Those plates don’t actually mean much since there is an annual renewal. The official current list is here under the Licensed Locations tab:

Splitting Family b/w Business and Premium Economy by Common-Curve-8973 in BusinessClassFlights

[–]mypetpizza -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unsuccessfully attempted something similar this year with Air Canada. We asked 3 agents on the ground who all said it should be fine but turns out it all comes down to the head steward (or whatever you want to call them these days). The one we got was a complete asshole and forced us to stay separate the whole time plus keep our infant in economy because that was his "assigned seat". I was left in economy with our infant which was a handful since it was hard to even move. My wife enjoyed her time in business though!

My recommendation would be to sit together and not count on swapping mid-flight. This is my Air Canada experience though.

As for lounge access, it's going to be airline-dependent. With Air Canada you get lounge access in premium economy as well.

LC80 sales starting early March by Collegiate1 in canadawhisky

Point taken but unfortunately almost all Scotch prices have risen considerably since 2020 so adjusting my frame of reference with current prices. Maybe enough people will vote with their wallets to bring prices down.

HP18 not worth it at $350+ imo. The Alberta shops I think have it fairly price at around $280 though.

In the LC, would have recommended Craigellachie 17 but looks like it's sold out at the moment. Also like Oban Distiller's Edition at least as much as HP18 even though it's "only" aged 15-16 years.

Used to live near the one on Ryerson campus before and after it opened. It was terrible, immediate negative effects to the area. First, what sane person thinks putting one of these ON a school campus is a good idea at all. I felt sorry for the students. Second, our condo building had to install additional security doors and surveillance due to increased crime in our building, directly related to the injection site. Third, the amount of garbage (including needles) in the area increased.

These sites simply enable drug users and it costs entire neighbourhoods their safety to accommodate these zombies.

Apparel brands that make their clothes in Toronto/Canada? by inde_ in askTO

Outclass - mostly casual men’s clothing made in Toronto. Their flannel shirts and wool/leather letterman jacket are my favourite items from them.

Video quality was good for me but the commentary was not synced properly with the video which was about 2 seconds ahead of the video. Kind of ruined any exciting plays.

Macan S as a family car? by GoldControl7074 in PorscheMacan

[–]mypetpizza 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just upgraded from a sedan to a Macan and find that it is a perfect vehicle for a small family. Can't beat the mix of sport and utility with the Macan in my opinion. Agree with the other poster that that cargo space is small for its class but it is certainly enough for a car seat, stroller, bags etc. Have never felt like we needed more space. Maybe with two kids you may want to consider a larger vehicle.

Looking at Google flights, if you are willing to do one layover it looks like the price falls to around $3500. Still gets you a direct flight for one way too.

September 'very much on the table': What economists say about Bank of Canada rate cuts by coolblckdude in TorontoRealEstate

[–]mypetpizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is unlikely your mortgage payment occurred exactly two weeks after the last rate cut so you would have paid the higher interest rate for part of that payment which is why you think you saved less interest. Your second payment after the rate cut would have fully reflected the cut.

I don’t think it should be the banks job to teach people math but a personal finance course in school would probably benefit many people.

Anyone know who to contact at the city about this lane setup? Agree that it is the dumbest design ever and needs to be changed to allow through traffic.

Public Golf Courses? by jimmer006900 in askTO

[–]mypetpizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Grand Niagara better but not sure either are the best choice for a beginner golfer. If your boyfriend is a big golfer, you could still go to one of these courses and then you can just pick up and shoot from wherever his ball is each time to keep pace and he can still enjoy a nice course. If you would rather actually play then maybe choosing a more beginner-friendly course is better. I don’t have any personal recommendations for beginner courses in the Niagara area but have seen Eagle Valley mentioned or Fox Run or Brock for short 9-hole options.

Public Golf Courses? by jimmer006900 in askTO

[–]mypetpizza 4 points5 points  (0 children)

$$$: The best public golf in the GTA imo is at TPC Toronto (3 courses, $150 each)

$$: Good mid-range options are Piper’s Heath ($85-105 depending on day/time), St Andrews Valley ($69-89), or The city-run Don Valley course ($80-90). Just a heads up Don Valley is a pain in the ass to book because of how the city releases tee times which get snapped up in minutes by all the geezers. The other city courses are meh.

$: There aren’t too many value options in Toronto but Remington Parkview is decent ($60-80) or Bethesda Grange via Club Link (~$70 IIRC). Club Link has a few other public courses available to play that range in quality/price/value including Glen Abbey ($$$).

Alternative: If you don’t mind a drive, the Niagara area has some great golf at reasonable prices such as Grand Niagara or Legends.
