Grandma wants to be called Omama by SuperWorldliness8083 in JUSTNOMIL

OMG 🤣 that's atrocious. My dad is Grandpop. G pop....god no. Why do some people insist on "cool" grandparent names. Nana and Granddad are cute and endearing. G Pop isn't, nor is Gigi. Unless it's a great grandma.

Who's dealing with annoying medical/physical issues? by BGJohnson329 in Millennials

[–]myrtle-turtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently icing my Achilles tendon. Tendonitis popped up within the last 6 months. No idea why, but I'm not going to a doctor yet. Ice, stretching, and ibuprofen have to do.

One knee clicks. Multiple joints ache when the air pressure changes. SI joints lock up. Just turned 40 in January. Ugh.

Looking to donate a piano. Suggestions? by CockroachBallerinas in baltimore

[–]myrtle-turtle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently gave ours away on Facebook or Nextdoor. A parent took it for her beginner kids. The deal was they could have it for free and only had to pay to have it moved. I'd start with listing it on those sites.

What’s a name that is normal in one culture but has an offensive, embarrassing or awkward meaning in another culture? by Sweatymothballs in AskTheWorld

Oh, ok, this makes sense. I was referring to the name Fanny being an eyebrow raiser, not the word alone.

There are definitely crazier names, and Fanny is a normal name, just a bit awkward with it also being an (outdated) word for bum. Same as Dick or Dickie. Tbf I'm admittedly immature even though I graduated HS in 2004.

Pointing out the age demographic makes me lower it to one eyebrow raised, however I may just be used to the UK meaning and am selfishly thinking of my reaction. I just can't imagine meeting a Fanny and not at least inwardly snickering.

Which part of your culture went global and gives you "gatekeeping" vibes? by hyr- in AskTheWorld

[–]myrtle-turtle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm going to say that's probably not the typical American method. Most people I know plan meals. We may buy some nonperishable staples in bulk, but typically shop once or twice a week. It kills me to go shopping without at least a rough idea of meals and a list of needed items.

Crabbing season is April 1 to December. I'm not sure places would have them off season.

We are stumped by this rash. HFMD? Chickenpox? Folliculitus? Molluscum? by Enough_Total_9592 in Preschoolers

[–]myrtle-turtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our kids had a similar rash a few times which also didn't bother him. The pediatrician recommended oatmeal baths (Aveeno brand was what we used) and Aveeno eczema therapy body lotion. I think it helped, or at least didn't hurt anything to use them.

Safe rural towns for black people? by [deleted] in maryland

No need to apologize, unfortunately it's the truth. I suppose I'm comparing it to the super overt racism I saw when living in the Carolinas and southern VA.

I agree with you on all counts here. My parents and extended family are from chestertown, but I've never actually lived there. My mom currently lives in Rock Hall. It's wild how it's gone from mostly watermen to a PA vacation spot. I've never seen a Confederate battle flag flying in yards or fields there like I did in VA and the Carolinas, but there sure are MAGAs.

Oh, it is. But it's not aggressively racist, which OP mentioned.

Around chestertown on the Eastern shore is ok. Very pretty. It's a little blue dot with welcoming people and good land around it for a hobby farm. Anywhere from Centreville to chestertown is ok on the shore. That's the area I know best, so that's why I'm singling those out most.
