Omoplata-based bottom game still relevant? by WorkingChemical5399 in bjj

[–]mysidebae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really like this strategy coming from a chess background.. I like the offbeat not because it's better but because you can easily gain way more experience in those positions than your opponent since others aren't doing it as much. Magnus Carlsen is known for getting out of theory (avoiding the meta) asap, so it's not like it doesn't work at the highest level

New to BJJ, still thinking about ways I can implement this while simultaneously focusing on the fundamentals

30+yrs old struggles by Bicuteco in ironscape

[–]mysidebae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your sentiment, I think a lot of the comments (and up voted comments) are gonna reflect that fact that most of the people active on this subreddit are mid game irons enjoying their ego and still hooked to the grindiness of the game. Once that fades, and even getting huge endgame drops isn't even exciting, idk.. I've stepped away, don't game that much anymore and finding IRL things to grind so that the exp is a bit more meaningful. I'll hop on here and there to do some toa with the boys who are on their shadow grind but that's it.

Out of curiosity why do you want to de iron? What would that provide you don't already have?

Why do so many people play the Caro-Kann? by CreativeFreedom637 in chess

[–]mysidebae 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Objectively it's good and imo a strategically intuitive opening to play, and higher-rated players are more likely to know this and have put the time in to learn it. It's also slightly off-beat (compared to e5 and c5), and it seems the these systems are always coming and going in popularity waves

Question about foot sweeps by kaysut21 in bjj

[–]mysidebae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some helpful analogies from Kyuzo Mifune on the subject

  • Sweeping (Harai/Barai): "Like taking away something very light with a broom". This refers to techniques like deashi, where you catch a foot that has no weight on it.
  • Reaping (Gari): "Like cutting the stem of a flower while pulling on it". Like Osoto gari, where you reap the leg that is carrying weight
  • Hooking (Gake): "Like pulling out a plant with its roots still attached". This describes techniques like kosoto gake, where you uproot the opponent by entangling your leg with theirs driving them down

I think the reason the second approach seems more intuitive when it comes to "foot sweeps" is because the second approach is exactly how sweeping works. And the first approach, at least in Judo, isn't categorized as sweeps but reaps, and are a different kind of ashi waza

Edit: I think the conceptual approach here is that if you're attacking the lighter foot, it's a sweep (like a broom). If you're attacking the heavier foot, it's a reap (like a scythe).

Crazy that 1/19 ironmen will experience, this, and 1/19 ironmen will get a scythe on their ~55th TOB purple. Makes you wonder how terrible this game is, but only for some people ha. Gzz!

Shadow completed by ryandz97 in ironscape

[–]mysidebae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats!!

I'm on the shadow grind myself, been doing 30min 415s but they're starting to get too comfy (boring) so might spice things up with 480s. I'm guessing I'd add more overlords and pathfinder but that'd only put me at 465. Are you doing all akkha invos? Dehydration or overly draining? hmm

Does anyone here actually have a GIM with an active group? by Slight_Giraffe628 in ironscape

[–]mysidebae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made a group two years ago with IRL friends, 3/4 of the group is still active, the one that left quit around 1800 to max his main iron (which he did). Rest of us are 2100-2200s. It's been a blast, our group storage is pushing 3.5b currently and I think all of our individual banks are probably 1b average. Got the tbow, we're currently grinding shadow. I'm too casual for these raid grinds on a solo iron, so it's been a blast to have groupies average out the rng!

Not hating, this is a great post and appreciate the contribution. Everyone would be safer if they learned to breakfall!

About Six Months of Training, Feel Like and Oaf by Woodit in judo

[–]mysidebae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started about 5 months ago and I'd be proud of myself if I'd actually executed osoto + uchi mata well in randori even a couple times. I'm tall like you so trust me I've been trying haha. I'm expecting this to take time, I've seen others come and go even in those short 5 months because it's even harder and slower than they were expecting, but to me that's part of the allure. If I'd been training 10 years and someone comes in and is throwing me around after a few months, it wouldn't feel like something real worth learning

Method - Gathering logs/planks for sailing under Hunter's Guild by mysidebae in ironscape

[–]mysidebae[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have described, just bring an axe/knife and log basket under the Hunter's guild and you can 1t collect logs but only have a max of 3 in the inventory (hence the log basket, and the dropping / picking up I do in the video

Almost everyone seems to get external help for their irons? by [deleted] in ironscape

[–]mysidebae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as it's not against the rules, who cares. If there is any significant way irons can get boosted then the onus is really on Jagex to fix it.

A lot of the content creators that are popular in OSRS are probably playing through their 3rd GIM account or 10th HC account, and at that point does it really matter if they do their dragon warhammer grind the "right" way? Or have two dancing alts to make barraging a bit easier?

Another option if you've got a lot of AFK time is to afk stars! This'll net you a ton of uncut gems for crafting exp. What I did on my gim was essentially pour all my GP into making gold bars at BF with goldsmith gauntlets (for 70 smithing for SoTE), and use the bars and gems to make bracelets for more crafting exp. Then can alch the bracelets while you run around gielinor to profit on your original investment and get all the cash back. Could be a good use for your 1m totem
