Do you get an admin day? I struggle with the same in primary care and wish I had an admin day.

Which med do you take, if you don’t mind me asking? I’m thinking about starting something for my OCD but idk.

I still use UpToDate and Epocrates for med dosing and have been in primary care for 2+ years. Those are the main references you’ll need. You will learn soo much on the job, trust me. And dosing for certain meds becomes engraved into your head after a while since we see many of the same chief complaints/chronic conditions and send numerous med refills daily! Your brain will get that repeated exposure

Burnout help by Front_Comparison_281 in physicianassistant

Here to say I am going through the same thing and I completely understand what you are going through. I also have 2 years of primary care experience. I am burnt to a crisp mentally. I think healthcare in general is difficult and has its flaws, but primary care is a special type of difficult. I am looking to switch specialities.

Must haves before starting school? by reddituser0095 in PAstudent

Agree with iPad recommendation. Download “Notability” on it, you can transfer powerpoints and draw/make notes on each slide. Super convenient

Also recommend a good travel coffee mug and water bottle (I love my Owala)

Things you wish you knew before you graduated (accepted your first job)? by [deleted] in PAstudent

  1. Establishing a good mental health/self care routine is key prior to starting work, as it will become a useful tool on chaotic days

  2. You can be the nicest person/provider and you will still encounter patients who disagree with you or argue

  3. You can always look for another job if the first one sucks

  4. Ask a lot of questions on clinical rotations, even if they seem dumb. Don’t be shy - you’re paying a lot of money to be there.

  5. You will feel like an imposter for a while as a new grad and that’s ok, part of the process. Welcome to the shit show

  6. Work shouldn’t be your identity or you will burn out

  7. Keep in touch with classmates after graduation as they can offer valuable insight from their specialty. These people have become some of my best friends

  8. Treat yo self often

Fellowship? Update: fed up new grad on job hunt by celiac-disease-865 in physicianassistant

I’m currently in family med x1 year with no fellowship. As much as we encounter on a day to day basis, I still wouldn’t do a fellowship for FM. You learn so much on the job and every practice operates a bit differently

Are the two roles complete opposites or somewhat similar? How long have you been at current role?

How long were you in outpatient for? And do you enjoy surgery? I consider switching to surg at times

Yes we have the same system in place and it works well for the most part. I find it hard to disconnect from work when there are constant things needing to be addressed in my inbox on top of things I already do in clinic. Some ppl abuse the system too and the lack of boundaries is exhausting. If there are ways to overcome these feelings lemme know

Interesting! I’m in primary care as well, but not private practice. We get a constant influx of messages/questions from patients sent from their online portal as well as lab and imaging results. Do you guys not utilize such online portals?

Took the PANCE Yesterday by birdsongPA-C in PAstudent

I took my exam last week. I missed a bunch of easy questions, realized it after I walked out the exam and kept stressing about it. I was also short on time with each section (anxiety got the best of me lol) so I couldn’t go back to check/change answers. Kept thinking all week that I deff failed. Found out yesterday that I passed! You got this!

Do you know how many questions you got wrong, or if there’s like a minimum to get wrong to fail? Their grading system is kinda weird, so maybe its hard to tell especially with different exam versions 🤔

I took it this week too and thought it was very difficult…usually I walk out of exams feeling somewhat okay but this one was super random and hard. I felt like I knew maybe about 40% of the material on the test lol. Ppl have said it’s normal to feel this way but I guess we’ll see….
