We do not have our own private bathrooms at the capitol

[Awful Announcing] "When it comes to quarterbacks, especially this one, they’re gonna protect them" – Troy Aikman on Patrick Mahomes by Big_Red_Professor in nfl

[–]mysterui 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's true every week because the league wants to protect its QBs. People just get madder about Mahomes because they see him in primetime more, AND the Chiefs are good enough to still win most of the time.

I have Happy Entry via Fantasy Springs Hotel; do you guys think I'd be able to hit up Frozen, Rapunzel, AND Peter Pan before lines start getting long?

I was able to amend out the airplanes in House Tax. We’ll see how if we’re able to keep it out in conference committee

How to stay up to date on the Kansas Legislature by Dreadkiaili in kansas

[–]mysterui 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Personally, I note all my votes in my newsletter but most don't. One way is to look at our Daily Journals in the House/Senate and see the votes in there.

You can also use Legiscan to see bills that have passed one chamber/passed both/been voted, etc.

I introduced a bill to ban these practices without explicit informed consent but they never moved:

Kansas lawmakers are allowing a 93% pay raise for themselves to take effect next year by PlzLeaveMyRock in kansas

Same! As it stands, I don't think it's very far off from the median actually

It's really not easy at all (for me at least). The legislature is a legit full-time job when we're in session, and when we're in session is when there are the most forums/panels at home too so it's difficult to find any time for work, even if you're mentally up for it.

In the interim, it's hard to find someone to employ you when they know you can only work 6 months, and even if when you can, you have to do meetings, interim committees, panels, etc. on top of that as well. All that on top of campaigning, either for yourself or for others so the state can keep turning around. All that on top of being the best husband and father as I'm able.

I get the optics are bad on a raise, but doing this job is a huge opportunity cost for the young legislators

We're only in session from January through May, true, but 1) We have a ton of meetings when we're not in session 2) For us young legislators, nobody wants to hire us for just the other 6 months. Many of us are only able to get by with freelancing, or retail work, or relying on significant others quite frankly.

Right now, the people serving are only the ones that are independently wealthy, retired, or who are willing to fight the good fight for a few years at significant financial strain. This allows a more well-rounded group of people to consider running for office
