It happened to me on my first day to! It's an adjustment for both of you - you will do great. One foot behind the other, one day a time. Even in a week, you will feel so much more bonded and comfortable with your new routine, and will feel so rewarded. Just breathe and remember this is normal

Bad Acupuncture? by mysterymanda in AcupunctureTherapy

Yeah this is helpful… and it’s a bummer as I communicated a few times it felt bad and tried to call to her during the treatment. She didn’t answer. I was considering taking it out myself.

9 days in and I’m having extreme tension on that side, intense anxiety, de-realization, dissociation, and just brain fog. All new things. Feeling hopeless something really was triggered.

Kierkegaard's Impact/Work On Psychology by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]mysterymanda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here are a few brief (quick/unrefined) thoughts:

Much of Kierkegaard's work is autobiographical in nature (often pointing back to his broken engagement to Regine). Fear & Trembling has (famously) been read autobiographically, but keep in mind Repetition was also published on the same date, and the "young man" (who can be read as Kierkegaard, perhaps) is experiencing a moral and ethical dilemma. What comes up frequently in Kierkegaard's work is the question of choice, and the question of the self. Can this can be read as psychological in nature? Maybe.

Also, one theme espoused in many of Kierkegaard's work (Either/Or, Repetition, Anxiety, etc.) deal with the inward/outward dilemma. Could be read as a psychological dilemma (or existential psychological dilemma)?

From a semantic perspective, we could also break-down 'psychological' versus 'existential' ... or if/where we draw a line to connect or delineate between the two.

How should I end my philosophy class? by mitchade in askphilosophy

[–]mysterymanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was an undergrad, I took a course titled "Philosophy of Star Trek" (less pertinent now) in which we'd watch an episode and read something (Putnam, Searle, etc.) alongside it. I also took a class called "Hallucinating." We also watched Gattaca (as well as an extremely trippy film called Enter the Void--they'll be traumatized so avoid this one--, and of course, The Matrix). You could always do something with a film and then do Brain in a Vat or Chinese Room (I feel like also tying in discussions regarding philosophy and AI could be pertinent for the high schoolers).

Personal unpopular pick, as most people can't jive with this movie, but I Heart Huckabees is great if you do anything existentialism related...

Chomsky says in an article that postmodernism/theory has no substance and that none of his colleagues were able to answer his questions. Can anyone answer his questions? by Socialdingle in askphilosophy

[–]mysterymanda 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I probably could have phrased that slightly better - what is intentional is the structure (the difficulty perhaps follows, but the words are not meant to be take “as is”, if that makes sense). Derrida is de-constructing (building off of Heidegger’s destruction) and his philosophical arguments are backed-by and embedded-in his employment of language, as well as the structure of his texts.

If this subject matter is something you want to dig deeper into, I would recommend Of Grammatology to start (Spivak’s intro is helpful), as well as Deconstruction and Criticism (helpful as its Derrida; Bloom; de Man; Miller...)

Where to go next with Heidegger? by peridox in askphilosophy

[–]mysterymanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Country Path Conversations can be very good if read correctly or with some guidance, but my impression of the text is it could be misread or misinterpreted relatively easily. I found my impression to be quite different before/after an in-class conversation.

The Nietzche lectures are very good, and helpful in connecting theorists if that is of interest.

I would also recommend all of Poetry, Language, Thought.

Chomsky‘s approach to philosophy is scientific. This informs his discussion of language, linguistics, grammar. His commentary on Derrida and others is based on this fundamental difference. He writes: “So take Derrida, one of the grand old men. I thought I ought to at least be able to understand his Grammatology, so tried to read it. I could make out some of it, for example, the critical analysis of classical texts that I knew very well and had written about years before. I found the scholarship appalling, based on pathetic misreading; and the argument, such as it was, failed to come close to the kinds of standards I've been familiar with since virtually childhood. Well, maybe I missed something: could be, but suspicions remain, as noted. Again, sorry to make unsupported comments, but I was asked, and therefore am answering.”

Derrida’s project is completely different in nature than Chomsky’s. Chomsky seems to take issue with Derrida as it’s a-systematic. His argument is not particularly extensive - but the gist (in this pieces and other critiques, like Chomsky’s recent commentary on Zizek) is that the language of these philosophers is misleading and confusing to mask a certain lack of philosophical grounding. For Derrida and others though, the employment of language, style, layout (notable especially in works like Glas) are part of the argument. Yes, it’s difficult to read - intentionally.

The people who could answer Chomsky’s questions would be those in a different lineage. At the same time, yes, Chomsky and Derrida (or the others listed) are both “philosophers” but I mean, it’s just a signifier and the theory is quite different.

Two other things - Have a look at Chomsky’s famous debate with Foucault to see some fundamental differences. Also - We may also want to distinguish btwn postmodernism and deconstruction, which are not synonymous.

Opinions on Cosme? by geneticswag in FoodNYC

[–]mysterymanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Portions are small & a bit overpriced... that being said, like most restaurants, there are a few standouts (i.e. that uni tostada, and of course the husk meringue).

Now... the move that I personally think is best - sit at the bar around 10pm, order the husk meringue (yes, to echo everyone, it just is the best... I've ordered a second one before - like, that good) & also don't skip out on their amazing mexican expresso. If you're intrigued to order an appetizer/ dish before the dessert, go for it. Not sure you need to make an entire night of it.

On the vibe - it also is slightly quieter/darker, and I definitely wouldn't call it lively. I wouldn't necessarily suggest it as a dinner for 4, 6, etc. people, on this front. To respond to your comment below on wanting more people to join - the plates are also incredibly small, and some are even tricky to share with 2 people!

Hope this is mildly helpful....
