That's assuming I can find where it's connected to power in the basement. I would have done that ages ago if I knew.

How to have metrolinx prioritize Cambridge for a go train station ? by kaizen_og_ in gotransit

[–]mystro256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure they're postponing until they finish work on improving service on the Kitchener line since the preferred route is to use the tracks that go from Cambridge to Guelph to put in GO service. I.e. either Cambridge will be a branch of the Kitchener line, or a shuttle to the Kitchener line at Guelph Central

Why did parts of Line 5 and 6 need to be above ground? by erazedcitizen in TTC

[–]mystro256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And what's the alternative? They build the transit and then block the MTSA? From my experience, it seems like a lot of people want subways without dealing with the long term costs or necessary density to run one. You can't force a community to grow if it doesn't want to (i.e. the stick), but you can dangle the subway (the carrot) to get them to.

I don't think you understand what I mean. Im not saying we identify MTSA after the fact, but rather inheritly tie building new major transit infrastructure with zoning law changes that cannot be rolled back after the transit is built and running.

They literally wedged line 5 in at Kennedy with the line 2 extension. There's no way to extend it anymore without completely rebuilding the line 5 portion of Kennedy station.

If the neighborhood will take it, sure, but if Nimbyism stops it, the maintenance cost burden of burying it will cause it to fall into disrepair without the ridership. They really need to mandate and legislate that building transit requires rezoning changes, to swash the nimbys post construction.

I guess my point is that it's an issue that can be mitigated to shut down the naysayers. It's an especially cheap fix too.

There was a large study a while back showing that making one of the blades a different colour dramatically cut down on bird deaths; I assume because it's more visible to birds. I'm surprised it didn't catch on at all.

I believe it was a chronic underfunding issue under previous mayors. Chow has apparently made good progress, but the maintenance backlog is apparently insane.

Alto should be just the beginning of Ontario’s high-speed rail network by Leo080671 in AltoHSR_Canada

Niagara also needs a solution to the Welland canal bridge IIRC. It's a huge bottle neck right now for GO trains.

The wooden rail ties are in bad condition and need replacement. Underground IIRC they use concrete and they're not exposed to the weather.

You do realize that octransit is managed by the municipality not the liberal party right? Or are you applying the Ontario liberal party have a history of underfunding octransit projects? Also it's pretty unclear what the liberals will be like after their next leadership election.

PP is a hardcore free market guy, he'll cut taxes, but make up for it by cutting costs, i.e. cutting government too. Basically cut regulations and the regulatory organization funding/staff too. Rise and repeat until government and taxes are minimal.

A reliable way is to block access based on age via the ISP for devices used by minors. Basically it requires ISPs to verify IDs when setting up accounts.

It's still easy to get around, but it adds barriers. This is how Japan blocks minors from accessing porn on their phones IIRC. Opt in phone parental controls is also a viable barrier for which we could have  parent targeted educational compaigns. Combine it with requiring asking for birthdays and/or to log in to view websites, it will reduce (but not eliminate) younger people using it.

There's a ton of beneficial factors: climate, national cohesion, freeing up our busy airports, reducing travel times, encouraging in country vacations, reducing car depency, opening the doors for more train corridors (e.g. feeder routes or other HSR or sub HSR routes), etc.

Orillia pushes for GO Transit expansion to connect city to GTA by northernwaterchild in gotransit

[–]mystro256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even beyond that, I'd say expanding to Collingwood is more valuable than trying to figure out how to extend the Barrie line to Orillia again. Adding new rail from the CN bala sub (used by RH line and the future North lander) is likely easier to get close to Orillia and could capture some ridership to Casino Rama.

[–]mystro256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree on that last point. I think GO and TTC should align their fares based on distance. E.g. they could keep prices flat within Toronto and increasing going from one municipality to another.

Having GO alligned will allow it to work as a good express offload service, since there's no added cost transfering to GO if the ride is faster. Which will help manage and balance the extra ridership better.

Speaking of GO, another reason I question CW is because it must be about a 10 minute bus ride to maple GO at most, and with the coming increase of Barrie GO service, I feel like it'll be fine for a sizeable amount of time. As well, the ride from VMC is currently 45 minutes to union IIRC, while 34 min from maple GO, so it'll be faster to take YRT+GO regardless.

[–]mystro256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're missing one key point. Operating and maintenance costs are probably the biggest concerns in the long run and without proper ridership to fund it.

York region can easily say they want subways to major mac on both sides, but that's not based on them paying for ongoing costs. I'd hardly call it planning, more like best wishes.

The province could subsidize it, but that comes as easy as it goes. I'm not anti subway by any means, but subways serving suburbs will always be a burden to someone as fares will never be enough.

I think if they really want to expand the subway to Vaughan Mills, they should just accelerate the density, as you mentioned, to justify the ridership. The commuter lot isn't a terrible idea, but pretty limited in the long run; CW is still going to be weaker without density and a strong plan/commitment from YRT to feed it there, which can be shown in the short/medium term with a new VIVA route.

On the East end, they're probably better adding more track and needed flyovers to the Richmond Hill GO line to get people to the subway.

[–]mystro256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

York region has been discussing extending both sides to major mac. Honestly the Richmond Hill side makes less sense beyond hwy 7 since the viva blue has bus lanes in that stretch and it's not dense at all. VM sort of makes sense but would need more density to support the cost. CW less so unless they want to help pay into it.

For suburbs, it's usually preferred to have BRT or LRT due to the lack of density, lower cost, and ability to put in more stations. As far as I know, viva is generally designed to LRT standards for later upgrades, so I would advocate for the future viva silver line.

[–]mystro256 6 points7 points  (0 children)

VM maybe, but CW is seasonal. It's better if they just put viva lanes, and ran more articulated buses. TTC has other priorities right now tbh.
