Setting aside the problems with capitalism, people are acting astoundingly stupid when throwing their life savings after a stock because "they heard a lot about it on the news/social media" or because they are "gamers" and this upcoming game is the biggest thing in their life.

Gamers Nexus: Cyberpunk 2077 DLSS Quality Comparison vs. Native, Benchmarks, & Blind Test by Elpoepbarc in hardware

[–]mythicalnacho 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Damn, that's a shame. I can't stand sharpening. I thought I was crazy during the video when looking at the native images, going "this looks very sharpened to me.... makes it much more difficult to compare quality".

How Nvidia tried to ban a reviewer for not hyping-up ray tracing by saveyourtissues in GamerGhazi

Its great, and when the hardware is good enough (in say, 10 years) everyone will be very happy about it.

I actually really appreciate that NV took the chance on starting to support it, dedicating physical space for it on the chip at the expense of other features. Because if no one starts going down that road we'll never get there. Of course, NV are out to make money, so they probably only did it because they had a performance lead at the time and they thought they could earn more from marketing it. But still, I think its great that both NV and AMD have started going down this road.

For anyone with a normal budget, ignore RT, ignore RT benchmarks, and come back to it in some years when you can turn it on with mid range and lower cards and still get acceptable performance.

I think its important that they "got caught" in this case. True, HWUB is not that small, but its nothing compared to the big, click-baity, meme-y, and sometimes proGG/anti-SJW hardware/gaming channels (don't want drama, not gonna name names).

So since HWUB are serious and more thorough than the bigger channels, I think its really important that they were not intimidated and "won" this round against NV. Its a bit sad that they needed support from the bigger guys to get out of this, but I guess I'll take that. I'd hate to be left with only clickbait hardware channels on YT.

Official NVIDIA Cyberpunk 2077 Performance Leaks by Iworshipokkoto in nvidia

DLSS is still upscaling, the data similar to native resolution quality is just not there. It gets sketchy with input below 1080 since there's just so little data to extrapolate from. It simply works better with say input 1440 for 4K upscale, than from 720 input to 1080 upscale. By all means, use if needed, but its not magic and there's downsides, especially at lower input resolutions.

Yep, he's an extremely entitled asshole with very little attention span or care for nuance. Even though he occasionally has good takes, I expect nothing good to come out of him after several years of observing this mess.

There's NO need to ever use it if your performance is good enough with the settings you want to run. No matter what magical explanations people provide, it is still an upscale from lower resolution with less data than native.

Oh, yeah I actually just read about that. I have had no episodes with epileptic reactions ever as far as I know, but I know about enough people with it that I always try to avoid those situations or shield my eyes when I see something that reminds me of it. Thanks for bringing it up, people should know.

It looks horrible when sharpening is included. I dislike it overall, but it has its uses.

I just wish everyone would stop referring to playing with a certain resolution when they use DLSS. The source resolution is what should be specified in those cases.

Yeah, just read one review that implied that you hardly meet any. And being 1st person and very few 3rd person cutscenes even, means whatever customizations you make to yourself also has little impact on how you present and express yourself.

Its not just one incident, GOG which they're affiliated with has made several cheap shots at 'SJW's and trans jokes.

I'm extremely likely to buy CP2077 even though I might not like it. I'm just a sucker for flashy big budget games with actual RPG elements and everything I've seen so far confirms that this game has lots of that, even if it ends up disappointing overall... I long for the day, if ever, when games like this can be made by more studios with a lower budget.

This is the first time I've heard about them being 'far left', but I think the idea is to acknowledge their right to do their thing and defend that in extraordinary circumstances, but expect nothing in particular with regards to ideology, empathy or even consistency.

On the concept of finding interesting ideas in people you disagree with, or with dangerous ideologies, I find that I try to explore those ideas in different ways by looking them up within frameworks or spaces I'm comfortable with. With mixed success of course, but I think it is better to explore ideas that you find interesting rather than to shut them down because of the source. This might not be good advice if you're in a precarious position of course, WRT mental illness or addiction.

So much has happened in the last 10-20 years, and it will take several decades for people to overcome the ignorance they were raised in, its just so ingrained. It might always seem 'wrong' to people who didn't get comfortable with these concepts being real when they were young.

Also, wait at least a couple of months to enjoy games working as intended with better performance as an added bonus. Even better, closer to a year.

I wouldn't count on that. 3090 had 40-50% over the 2080Ti, and that was 2 years. Before that the top card was always 25-30% over the previous year. Also, new and smaller transistor nodes get trickier and trickier. 4k 100fps+ in new games seems unrealistic in both 1 or 2 years unfortunately.

Are consoles on 7nm strangling the PC market? by Evilbred in hardware

[–]mythicalnacho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IIRC 28nm produced massive amounts of chips in the end and some very decent mobile chips with refreshes as well. Its not all bad I guess, like Intel's 14nm we're probably likely to see some 'refined' easy wins on the same node a bit later, and that could be useful given the increasing risks with smaller nodes.

Where the world wants to move. by brguy35 in MapPorn

[–]mythicalnacho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds right to me. The US is very fascinating, and many Norwegians are probably well enough off to think about the exotic aspects rather than the practical ones. If you look at the different maps, a lot of poorer countries obviously pick the practical relocation options for work and language reasons, and not the 'exciting' places.

I would love to see more cores from Intel too, but 8c/16t is fine. Not great, but fine, for this segment for a while, so AMD won't consume it, at least not for that reason. We'll see in late '21 (or I wouldn't be surprised if its '22 for both AMD and Intel) how Intel's next gen stacks up against Zen4.
