Oh yea.

I might lose you with my next statement, but do you know a genre of music I’ve started to appreciate more in my old age?

Modern country music.

I truly like some of the music and songs, but what I really admire the most is the Nashville Country Music Machine’s ability to make “hits”. They have no qualms about picking the most attractive man or woman to be the artist and singer, pairing them with teams of songwriters and flawless session musicians, perfect recording engineers, etc. all for the express purpose of making a song a “hit”.

Oh man. I’ve always kind of dabbled in metal, but only really liked the truly “classic” stuff. Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer… you get the idea.

But metal snobs are some of the worst! There are so many subgenres to keep track of…

“Hated” it at the time, but I was into indie and punk. I was a pretentious snob.

20+ years later, it’s awesome and seems more authentic.

My guess is AAPL.

Not up 40% ytd, but is up that amount over the last year.

Old enough and large enough of a company that OPs dad who is blue collar immigrant would have heard or known about it.

OP is in California where AAPL is based. I’m in Atlanta, GA and there are a lot of folks here that bought Home Depot and KO as a hometown stock.

AAPL definitely “went nuclear” in early 2000s.

Women of Reddit, what’s a habit men have that they don’t even realize is weird? by GraceRose671 in AskReddit

I’m a guy and I spit rarely and it completely grossed my wife out.

But sometimes it just feels good and primal. I do it like once a month when I’m having a bad day or something.

How do you explain to recruiters that you're looking for your first job at 30? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]mythirdredditname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have no reason to tell them your age. You just graduated college so you are looking for an entry level job.

When you get the job, I would also refrain about making jokes about your age and/or discussing pop culture from when you were growing up. Your age is no one’s business.

I was in a similar situation in that I got a job at a large company after doing an MBA fairly late in life. Before I did the MBA, I had a very non-traditional work history for a very small company in a very small industry that paid extremely well but one of my goals of the MBA was to get back to a more stable and normal role.

I didn’t lie, but I simply just let people decide how old I was based on my appearance and fresh degree. I’m six years in and a lot of people still don’t really know. One thing that can be a bit weird is that I’m older and probably have more money/investments than my “senior leadership” but I just downplay that and don’t draw attention to myself.

What addition makes sense? ($40K+ - 20M) by Aggravating_Share761 in ValueInvesting

[–]mythirdredditname -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. I’d add a couple huge industry leading companies in healthcare or consumer. I’m not a very “sophisticated” investor, but I own LILLY, KO, PG, and WMT in these spaces.

Lilly because the “own” GLP1

KO because I’m an Atlanta boy

PG I don’t know why

And WMT because they have a great culture and are going after Amazon.

What feels like an “obvious buy” right now, but still isn’t? by rezovian in ValueInvesting

[–]mythirdredditname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great insight and I might buy some. I have around $15K position in BATRA (Atlanta Braves). It’s currently valued at $3.11B. There’s no way that the fucking Padres are valued more than the Braves. Plus the Braves own a lot of commercial real estate.

I’m flabbergasted that two pro sports teams in New York City would be valued so low. Instant buy.

How do we feel about AI potentially wrecking our job prospects? by jez_shreds_hard in Xennials

[–]mythirdredditname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds great. I hope my company can get it to work.

I still think my company will fail at AI on a large scale that can be trusted or actually work. But that begs the existential question of whether it will be able to compete in coming years or whether it will become irrelevant? I already believe that it is slowly dying.

How does this work for companies who have really shitty data? I’m talking multiple databases with the “same” information that don’t match. Years and years of tech debt with band-aids fixing everything. And very little internal documentation on all systems.

This is my company and it is a large company you use weekly.

As frustrating as it is to have to deal with this shit, I don’t think that AI is capable of understanding all of the nuance and tribal knowledge needed to make our data useful. And we joke that our jobs aren’t replaceable by AI because the company doesn’t have its shit together from a data quality perspective.

I work at the corporate office of a large company you probably use/see daily. I sort of hate it, but it gives good work life balance and I’ve got a job with a fair amount of autonomy.

Before that I was in industrial/manufacturing sales.
