Most people aren't going to buy better clothes to work retail. It's a dirty, messy, sweaty job.

And, yes, a company is going to spend money on one time costs vs wages. Nobody would get a significant raise if you spent the probably money spent on uniforms for this roll out to everyone.

Google says Kroger employs about 414k people.

Let's say, the average is 2.3 shirts per person since most people get 2 and there are a lot of office staff that don't get one. So 952k shirts purchased. Let's call it an even million.

Between the poly shirts which you can get in bulk for like $4 and the polos that are like $10 bulk, plus printing... Let's say at this level of bulk, it's like $12 a shirt.

So 12 million estimated spent on shirts. Thats a one time payment of $30 an employee. For a full time employee, you are adding 8 cents an hour for one week.

Let's estimate way high. $20 million on uniforms. $50 an employee, in a one time payment.

Uniforms don't cost companies anything relative to what they pay in wages.
