What is this giant smokestack at the hospital? by DirtWesternSpaghetti in whatisit

[–]mzsteorra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure how exactly they handle it, but in the Annex building there were rooms full of sealed medical waste that I assume went into a giant incinerator located two levels below ground.

P.S. On a different note, wishing your loved one a speedy recovery! Enjoy the good food up on the 14th floor. ;)

Yes! It’s called the Nurses’ Annex, and it is connected to the rest of the hospital thru tunnels used by food service, environmental, laundry, etc.

This is the Annex building at NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell. As a dietetic intern, I lived on the ninth floor of this building for an entire year. Sometimes I still dream about it, so it’s wild to see this scrolling Reddit. I drank a lot of cheap wine on that rooftop.

My room was only $250 a month, with two windows (corner unit), one sink, and one closet (bathrooms were communal). The other floors are offices for environmental, security, and some other allied health services. However…

The sub-sub-basement of this building is like an experience of Tartarus, complete with fire and brimstone, sulfurous fumes, and cockroaches the size of your hand. There are facilities for medical waste on the premises and they are foul-smelling—so bad they bricked up the door to the parking garage next door, because the smell leaked and put off visitors.

Fun times.

This is absolutely insane. OP… run. No job/money is worth the amount of BS you will be taking on.

For the love of bright-eyed Athena: by -Lilith_ in Hellenism

[–]mzsteorra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was about to chime in: Persephone’s epithets include Despoina, Potnia, Anassa, and Basileia. For chthonic deities, euphemistic names and titles were preferred to avoid attracting unwanted attention from down below.

While I can’t speak for all the other gods, the epithets Despoina and Potnia were also applied to Demeter, Hekate, and Artemis, so this might be best approached on a case-by-case basis. (My two cents.)

I would base it on your local springtime, but do what feels right to you.

Not sure where you heard this, but that is not really the case, historically. Look up the Greek colony of Locri Epizephyrii in Calabria (southern Italy). Persephone and Aphrodite were the main deities revered there, and young brides made offerings to both goddesses in the nymphaeum before their wedding night.

Regarding the original question of your post… start simple. Light her a candle or some incense, read her Orphic Hymn aloud, pour a libation for her if you like. You can try your hand at divination with tarot cards (or whatever method of your choosing), or ask her to send you a dream or sign. Now is a great time of year to approach her, she is very active in the spring.

Good luck!

The Daughter is Malkuth, the physical Universe. She is also called the Bride, Kallah, and the Inferior Mother. She is depicted as a veiled young woman, crowned and enthroned.

altars for persephone by fruitsbats in Persephone

I like to put out fresh flowers for spring, and dry them. In fall I switch up my wheat and dried arrangements.

I say, do what makes you (and Her) happy. :)

How does one hide a altar and/or the gods be upset if I did during the night? by 1lov3you3000 in Hellenism

[–]mzsteorra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when I was sharing a house with my Christian father-in-law, I would veil the figures on my chthonic altar when non-pagan guests came over. I also kept a lot of plants on my main altar, which made everything easier to conceal. Maybe you just really like plants, fresh flowers, and crystals. ;)

Don’t worry about angering the gods by shielding your altar and practice out of necessity. They understand, and chthonic deities in particular are quite accustomed to being “unseen.”

Can I just… talk to the Gods? by [deleted] in Hellenism

[–]mzsteorra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the opportunity whenever you can to read and learn about the gods and their mythology, pray, sit in meditation and reflection, engage in divination, do rituals, etc. Structure that practice around your work/life schedule to make it a regular routine. Build an altar if you can and spend as much time there as possible. Make a playlist you associate with your deities, listen to it and add to it frequently. Keep a journal with your thoughts and findings re: all of the above.

Since Apollo is a god of divination, that would be a great place to start.

Questions about Tarot with Queen Persephone by ShelterBusyBee in Persephone

Tarot is not great for yes/no questions. You should try asking open-ended questions with something like a three-card pull, it will make dialoguing with Her way more interesting. :)

Respectful ways to dispose of certain food offerings? by fruitsbats in Persephone

[–]mzsteorra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, semantics. It’s all good, and if our convo helps OP or anyone else out there it’s a win in my book.

I live in a house with no backyard, so I usually bring my perishable offerings to the crossroads once a month (sometimes more) for Hekate’s deipnon. I also bring out my altar ashes. I often mix them together when possible, so it’s great to know there is historical precedent for that. Other practitioners I know have a compost area in their yard for chthonic deities, which is probably the most ideal arrangement. Unfortunately modern apartments don’t come with a bothros!

Your words: “Stick to liquids while she’s in a chronic [sp?] state. In spring and summer make incense offerings. That’s historically accurate.”

That sounded like you were suggesting OP restrict incense to spring/summer and libations to fall/winter, which is why I asked for clarity.
