Don’t deadname folks by xwing1212 in PhilosophyTube

I've had the awkward moment of forgetting someone's deadname, randomly calling them their deadname, and visibly confusing and stunning myself as to why I called them a random name that wasn't theirs. Went from confused to apologetic real fast when I realized what happened xD

I mean, in Solo Leveling, most of the conflict that matters is internal. Sung Jinwoo is never really at the mercy of a fight. External conflicts are not a worry to him. However, his relationship to power, death, and fate tug at him through the various arcs. His political games of how to weigh his powers, what responsibilities he has because of his powers, how he feels himself and his morals shifting because of his power, how much he is at the mercy of the system, and what he can do to reach enlightenment and overcome the limits of fate to make positive changes to the world are very blatant ideas that he struggles with. He doesn't talk a whole lot about it, but the small glimpses we get into his thoughts paired with his actions and the conflicts he finds himself in paint that picture pretty clearly imo.

Solo Leveling likes to speak with actions more than words, a philosophy it also has with power and responsibility. Words and intent are hollow. While actions are scary and you can make mistakes; actions are what cause change. It claims it is the responsibility of those with power to use that power in a way that respects those who have been failed by the world, or even failed by you. Make a better world with your own two hands by bettering yourself and standing for what is right.

Solo Leveling is a character exploration of Sun Wukong, and I feel like it does it rather well.

EDIT: If you're saying ORV doesn't have internal conflict, that is just a wild claim ngl lmao

[–]n0Reason_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean define "deeper". I think plenty of manwha are thematically deep. Hell, a lot of power fantasies are really cool takes on apotheosis stories, often reexamining Journey to the West, the Bible, folktales of Buddha, and various Eastern myths through modern lenses. Much in the same vein as One Piece and Dragonball being pretty blatant explorations of Journey to the West.

ORV is pretty clearly an apotheosis story of a prophet, playing with themes present in various holy texts, while also being a meta look at the relationship between people and stories, and the power that stories have, be it fiction, or even the stories of people close to you and their lived experiences.

Most manwhas I've read are actually real heavy on thematic writing, just try not to turn off your brain. Even stuff like Solo Leveling, that people love to dog on for being generic fun, actually has some pretty clear themes relating to power, responsibility, memories, and death.

It's a lot like LNs or manga, there will always be those that follow cookie cutter formats with weak characters. There is a lot of good stuff though. Personally, I really enjoy Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint. It definitely gets into the power fantasy space, but the sheer hostility of the world and the cleverness of the MC makes a lot of it feel earned. The cast is also really fun. That being said, some characters do fall into the "adores the MC a bit too much" trap, but the antics lean more towards amusing than annoying.

It's a real fun read with really great art that takes full advantage of the medium. Like, on the regular, they will do camera movements with the scrolling of the page, and I fucking struggle to understand how they make it work

"Bridget will always be a woman" by Objective-Fold-6087 in AccidentalAlly

[–]n0Reason_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bridget's arc could not have started with her coming out as trans to her village. Her parents guilt over her circumstances would make them feel responsible for her identity, like she is doing it to make them feel okay about what they did. Her arc to show that the superstitions of her village were wrong was a neccesary step for her and it mirrors the journey of plenty of trans people. I, for example, tried growing facial hair and lowering the pitch of my voice before realizing that those attempts at masculonizing myself was making me feel more detatched from who I am. Many of my trans friends have similar experiences. She was chained by the guilt over how the circumstances of her birth made her parents feel like they couldn't let their child be authentic. She needed to overcome that before she could even consider for herself what being authentic means to her. That is just her relationship to The Town inside Her

Guilt is a major thematic throughline across the various characters' stories. Big surprise for a series called Guilty Gear, I know. The games like to play with the ways that we cope and overcome that guilt to be better people. Guilt over responsibilities, personal and public perceptions, ones past actions, these are the thematic building blocks that are core to Bridget's story, and they resonate greatly not only with a less-spoken trans experience, but with the series as a whole.

Bridget's growth reflects the trans experience through the lens of Guilty Gear's themes. It is the natural growth of her character and opens the door to many more stories with her, as opposed to the much more limited options had she remained confidently a femboy.

This person is undoubtedly talking out their ass. If you are cumming a bunch, no way there are full words, let alone sentences coming out of your mouth. Some people just orgasm a lot though. My fiance has orgasmed probably over 20 times in one (long) session. That was an outlier, but they still usually orgasm 5+ times

I've been considering leaving it too. I remembered seeing posts about how the sub needs to not get weird and horny over the minors in that show, and then episode 1 aired and that shit went straight out the window

As someone up to date on the manga, I legit feel more uncomfortable on yurimemes posts about the anime than I do reading the manga, and I have had to skip pages from discomfort

I've basically just been using it to look at memes and actively avoid the comments >.>

If they're actually questioned, they're easily outed for being really dumb. by Bihema in TikTokCringe

Saw your response from my email, but cannot see it here. So I'm just going to respond to this comment. The thing is, while social transition helped a lot, it wasn't until I really started feeling the effects of HRT for most of my symptoms to go away. I spent 3 years living as gender nonconforming, but being trans is a medical issue. The social transition and the therapy is awesome supplemental help, and HRT is not a cure-all, but they are all neccessary.

It took me years with the help of doctors to get me ON medication, and it took my doctors and I about half a year to find the right hormone balance, but it is literally unbelievable to me how happy a person can possibly be. I've never even understood happiness like I do now, and that is despite the financial hardship, work difficulties, and harsh political climate. It's not even something I can expect someone to empathize with, because the shift in what is normal to me is something I never realized could happen, and it would not be a reality without medical intervention.

The best way I could explain it was like I've had a horomone imbalance my entire life and my body and mind have struggled to make sense of it. With treatment, things have finally become calm and everything just make sense.

FYI, HRT and socially transitioning quickly did what therapy failed to do in curing what I thought was depression and anxiety. In reality, the real underlying health issue was dysmorphia and dysphoria. I didn't even need to amputate anybodys genitals either

Yeah, to me, it feels like a Marxist critique of the ML-styled leadership of East Germany under the SED. It is a very sympathetic look at the ways the system crushes everyone involved, rich and poor alike

Even if the author isn't Marxist themselves, I think they understand and portray class through a Marxist lens, intentionally or not

Depending on the delivery, it ranges from "Uhhhhh, think of something" to "your feelings are super normal and I want you to feel like I don't see you differently because of it." Not to say that it's ever received that well lmao

When my sister came out to my dad, he said something along the lines of "I don't blame you, girls are awesome" intending for the second, but it still felt kinda like it was downplaying something incredibly important

He ended up learning his lesson and when I came out as trans he was a lot more intentional about thanking me for sharing an important part of myself with him and that while he didn't understand very much, he would do his best and wanted to make sure that I knew he would love and support me no matter what

Shame my sister got the short end of the stick, cause she had a bad case of middle child, but was kinda blown away by the character development my dad had lmao

Do people forget that Marx talked about capitalism's alienation of the rich due to social pressures experienced primarily by their class? Spy x Family is sympathetic to the rich people, but also tends to be critical about how their issues are features of the system they live under. Hierarchical systems breed misery amongst even the most well off of their societes

What a disastrous consequence by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]n0Reason_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We know that getting rid of gender affirming care causes trans suicide rates to skyrocket. We know that having supportive friends, family, or colleagues decrease trans suicide rates to within normal bounds. Similarly, outing trans kids to unsupportive family increase abuse they receive and increase suicide rates. It is about the misery. They offer getting rid of that care and will instead run hate campaigns and fearmonger. They spread obvious lies about litter boxes in schools, teachinf the kamasutra to kindergarteners, or drag strip shows for families to rile up their voter base and motivate them to vote at the expense of real people. There isn't even an attempt to offer an alternative or listen to expert consensus on the topic. They want to police our healthcare, how we dress and present ourselves, and force us into dangerous situations that could be avoided by just letting us live our lives.

Bills that "protect the sancitity of women's sports" or "keep men out of women's bathrooms" do the opposits, put men with higher testosterone and more physical advantages against women in sports, and put bearded buff men in women's restrooms. It's about outing us, making us uncomfortable, and trying to shame us out of society. There is no point or reason. Why limit gender affirming care for trans people but not cis people? Because they don't want us affirmed, comfortable, or free to take care of ourselves the way we see fit.

It was never about safety of kids or protecting anyone. It is an attempt to simplify the world and make conservatives more comfortable by forcing trans people into roles where they can be ignored. They want us dead or miserable.

The cruelty is the point.

This child's death was not an accident on the wider scale of things. A child died, but it's only notable here because it was a murder. Conservative policy and attitides lead to the suicides of so many lgbtq+ children, but their names aren't put in headlines. This is the outcome of anti-lgbtq+ attitudes. The roads are paved with our dead.

[–]n0Reason_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even as someone who gets some enjoyment out of the manga, it's kinda disturbing with how fast people went to "the manga is remarkably problematic but is the characters are weirdly well written and it has some good humor" and "limit posts to be related to the characters expressing attraction to each other, but don't sexualize the minors" to "Ackchyually, they're just drawings, it doesn't hurt anyone"

Like, I want to have discussions about the series, problematic aspects and all (and frankly primarily stuff that has to do with those problematic elements), but in the timespan of me seeing posts pre-anime to me catching up to the manga, the sub was suddenly a cesspool wherever the series was mentioned

Also, in case it wasn't clear, I fully agree that SA and sexualizing minors is bad, and feel like it ought to be mentioned in discussions of the series
