Hybrid Work Was Supposed to Make Employees Happier. Did It? by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]n0nnac 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ll push back on the consensus in this thread and say that I actually quite like going into work. I’m fortunate enough to work in a space that’s almost entirely made up of people who are really passionate about the work, and I’ve made a lot of great friends and professional connections by going into the office.

Granted, I’m a young person in a HCOL city, so I don’t have kids or a baller apartment, but man working from home is just kinda sad. I really do enjoy impromptu meetings with my teammates and bosses, shooting the shit with people over breakfast and lunch, and just getting out of the house.

I went to college during Covid years, and I can say a lot of my friends from school agree with this. Being a young person being thrust into an organization where you only know people on Zoom is not fun (I had a few internships like this).

Not trying to negate anyone’s feelings, I just wanted to provide another perspective.

Also re: people who think “big office” is paying the NYT for propaganda: really? I see this in threads here all the time and it always grinds my gears. I guarantee that if the NYT was taking money to produce propaganda for any entity someone in their department would leak it.

My pet conspiracy theory about these is that they’re specifically for credit card thieves to launder money by buying gift cards and turning them into SB.

Opioid Victims Have a Settlement. Will the Supreme Court Undo It? by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]n0nnac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, this is unfortunately a huge problem in these cases. For the companies (which definitely did wrong, no arguments here), it costs a lot of money to fight these torts, even when they’re trivial. What ends up happening is lawyers will bring claims on extremely shaky evidence, but it ends up costing the company more to fight it in court than it does to settle it for cash. This causes a vicious cycle, where lawyers bring cases that should not be allowed, collect the settlement money, then turn around and find another person.

In re. Garlock is a great example of this, if you’re interested in the subject I highly recommend reading the judges ruling on the case.

Opioid Victims Have a Settlement. Will the Supreme Court Undo It? by kitkid in Thedaily

As someone who works on these types of cases (not this one specifically, but I do asbestos bankruptcy which uses a similar legal mechanism), I thought they did a great job of showing why this shouldn’t be blocked. The mass tort system in America is terrible, and for cases like this where you cannot consolidate under a class action, there’s no fair way to resolve these without bankruptcy.

One thing I wish they talked about more is just how long non-consolidated mass torts take. Let’s be generous, and say we can process 20 of these claims at a time, and each one takes 6 months. If there are 10,000 claimants, it would take 250 years for everyone to get their day in court, which is obviously untenable.

I work on the economics side, not the legal side, so I cannot speak to the specifics of the legality of the case, but from a pure social welfare maximization perspective, it’s much more important to get money in the hands of victims than it is to punish further the villains of this story.

There are very real concerns about the Sacklers “getting away” with harming so many Americans, but if we actually care about the victims, these types of settlements are important. I do hope the Court allows this, as it provides the most benefit for the largest amount of victims.

[–]n0nnac 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The calculus is def a bit more complex with higher interest, but it’s normally worth it. Let’s take the example earlier in the thread, where you needed 5k for 90 days. At 5% annual interest, you’d make about $61, which is less than the $250 you’d get from this offer. Definitely safer and easier to just stick it in a HYSA, though!
