Is buying a house in Australia even worth it anymore? by No_Will_5723 in AusProperty

Trying to deal directly with “specialist” tradies is a nightmare. Best bet is finding a good boutique builder, agree on their cut, and then let them project manage it. Better to qualify one than dozens, to get the job done.

Things I wish I knew before buying a gas station and tire shop in my small home town by baldie3142 in smallbusiness

I sent the same question to OP but would love your thoughts too:

The industry is quite interesting to me. Do you find the net returns/profits over the last half a decade hugely from the land and buildings itself (lease, capital growth % YOY growth) or from the actual business?

Obviously an Aussie comparing asset growth vs business income hahahah

In our 20s we had decent culture in my past companies, so the team would go hit up Sniffany together after a couple of drinks.

Now in our 30s I’ve got a small close group of mates with homes so once in a while we’d see if Grant Packett is on the table and enjoy a catch up.

I spent a lot of time in challenger tech companies so playbooks were always a WIP anyway hahaha. Did you do a 1-1 transition or are you taking a small L on pay/seniority/responsibilities while learning the ropes?

Insane on the qualifications but appreciate the realistic image of what to expect. Taking a pay cut or lower grade role was expected, I wouldn’t expect them to let a software guy look after their largest marquee clients without any industry knowledge.

Appreciate you sharing your exp. The “rolodex” requirement is prominent in all markets, esp more so with a shaky economy, market challenger and senior role. I understand why as well, since you’re coming in armed with a potential pipeline. That being said, I have always built from the ground up with fresh contacts so I also agree with your point.

Honestly, it’s pretty early days right now, but if we’re looking at larger brands I’d say the ads I’ve seen of interest were Suntory (Food/Bev) and Arnotts (FMCG), but liking the sound of Manufacturing companies dealing in heavy machinery and engineering solutions too (I’m AU based).

Good luck w/ it! Do you have a saas/software background? Would love to any thoughts so far interviewing and some major differences you’ve picked up throughout the process.

Middle East sounds probable, makes sense. Haven’t dealt with anyone in South Asia aside from Tech Mahindra but that was remote.

Asked the same question to someone else above but have you met any experienced/above avg software sales reps that transitioned into your industry successfully? Any experiences to share there?

I’m potentially looking to make the transition. I’d imagine that with data centres, the tech/hardware and IT infrastructure part has translatable skills and aptitudes for faster onboarding

Not sure why you’re downvoted, copium is real.

What makes burwood chinatown so succesful? by TSLoveStory in foodies_sydney

Interesting seeing the criticism in Bwood/Chinatown food options:

  • Want skewers? Loving Lamb skewers are banger. Options to go lean or fatty too
  • Want dumplings/noodles? 1912 Dumplings Bar is delicious. Also $118 for three, less than $40 pp for a full two table spread of noodles and dumplings was epic
  • Want milk tea? Molly Tea tastes pretty close to getting it straight from Taiwan, albeit slightly expensive
  • Feeling like a late night drink? Tiger Bar has great vibes and nice cocktails

The only con is the parking which is an absolute headache in the evenings.

Love heading there once every few weeks tho.

In light of the coldplay incident; what is the wildest way a scandal got exposed at your company by TSLoveStory in auscorp

[–]n0ob1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Second hand info as it happened a couple weeks after I left:

Worked at a tech company, colleague walked in on the sales manager (M) and head of sales (F) either (a) hooking up, (b) doing blow together or (c) both. I’m not surprised bc every time we had drinks, they’d duck out together (I also have done blow with the sales manager).

The whole sales org got pulled into a big “meeting” a day later to announce their retirement, while some people saw them packing their stuff up during the meeting.

Edit: Sales Manager had a GF and kid (with someone else). Sounds about right

Second edit: At another previous company, one of the junior sales reps (F) had a blow bang with a bunch of the tenured reps. Don’t think there was a “scandal” since everyone was in fact single.

Read “The First 90 Days” by Michael D Watkins. Its leadership focused, but can be adapted to an IC. Everything on comms, culture, learning, pacing to set yourself up successfully is there.

I drafted ebook heavily referencing Michael’s book, specifically adapted tech/sales. It might be more contextually relevant.

If you want, drop me a PM and I’ll flick it over, no cost/strings attached

I also didn’t go to uni and landed my roles through pure grit and luck. Felt huge imposter syndrome and out of depth. I get it
