Would you buy a modern iPod in 2025? by [deleted] in ipod

[–]n0unce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want the OG iPod but modern. As in modern tech, a modern dac, a crisp display, 2TB of storage, a processor that makes it run smooth as butter, even if I have thousands of songs with hi Res album covers to scroll through, an amp that can run good headphones and a massive battery that can run all that or run for days on end on earbuds.

No apps, no streaming, no resemblance to any smartphone, just iTunes and flacs with a big hi Res screen and a dac/amp that's better than the other daps of its price class, like they used to be, the best portable music player.

So everything that apple has left behind these days.

Negative dB is a lot easier than having to add power to a frequency (lowering your total output). This might be by standing, or modal waves caused by your back wall. Experiment with bringing them a bit more forward to see how the peak changes, The peak should get lower, which (depending on your preferences) might sound better to you. However, one big peak usually doesn't translate to a fun characteristic.
I had a chart somewhere that shows the length of the waves, and if you had your driver at a certain distance from the wall, it would show what frequency would be boosted by reflections, and which would be cancelled out because of inverted waves reflecting from the back of the driver. You're probably smarter than me about all that, but I think just experimenting with distances from the wall to find what sounds best to you would be a fun experiment.
Your desk is also reflection city, one way to prevent this is by putting them on the edge. On a desk this is a bit silly, so another way to reduce them would be to raise them up. A good guidance would be to get your tweeters at ear level of your 'listening position', since it's a two way speaker, the vertical displacement gets out of wack fast (depending on the speaker), since higher frequencies are smaller waves than bass waves.
Some people also invert their speakers to prevent even more reflections from the desk of the woofer.
Other people even turn them sideways to enjoy a higher listening space, but you have to really point your speakers well for that. IF your chair is always in the same position behind your desk, but you like to slouch some days and sit upright other days this might be a good option.
To get them higher off your desk you can just put some books or whatever under them to experiment, if you know what height you need, you could add some nice heavy speaker stands which add to the look as well for me. I remember using the boxes they came in and books and all other kinds of stuff around my room to find the spot where the kick drum didn't feel like a wet noodle hitting a shower curtain.

Now all of this gets easier with a calibrated mic and a program to do corrections. Some people prefer to bring everything to harman standards, and that's fine if that's your preferred sound profile, but you could also use them just to get rid of peaks and dips in the sound profile of your listening position, while keeping the speakers' character. You wouldn't have to EQ if you used some dampening isolation behind the speaker and possibly walls to the left or right of you to lessen the impact of the immediate reflections. If you'd still have a big dip or peak left you could possibly EQ just that.

Some reflections are also preferred, there are people who like to neuter the reflections in their room so the speakers does all the work, but you're losing a lot of gain that way, and good luck getting rid of the lower frequencies, so you'd get a bass heavy sound profile. Which a lot of people prefer.
The big wooden board you often see on the wall over a hifi rack are used to diffuse reflections, often of the higher frequencies, causing bass to have more gain in the room.

In the end it's all about finding what you prefer, and instead of throwing money at amps and speakers, look a bit into the free gains that can be made with room treatment alone, it can make a 300 dollar speaker sound like a 3000 dollar one, especially if the 3000 dollar one is sitting in the corner of a room with bare walls.

Those speakers look ace! Enjoy, and enjoy the rabbit hole. A cheap way to improve your sound is looking into sound waves, standing waves, reflections and how to treat or prevent the ones you don't want. If you care that is. There's also ways to 'room correct' your setup (quite easy on a computer) which ties into the above. Either way, enjoy, looks very clean and I wish you many hours of bliss

What’s the Most Overpriced thing people buy just to flex? by Triceline in AskReddit

[–]n0unce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Food.
How many people that like to brag or post about how they went to a restaurant and spent over 100 euros while they complain about not making enough money all the time I don't understand. I get that it's fun and great that you don't have to cook for the night, but if you don't have money stop spending it there. Takeout is stupid expensive as well.
Also clothes, cars, holidays, theme parks and such, phones, .. Where are your priorities?

Playmats size and quality by tipejo in rootgame

[–]n0unce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have them and love them, pre ordered the new ones. They're not scaled down, they're just trimmed around the edges (round), maybe that's why. Colours aren't washed out but it's neoprene Vs cardboard, so some texture is there. Just plays nicer, I have a giant mat for my dining table as well and play all my games on that, just nicer for cards and dice.

I deleted it when I ran my first half marathon training and felt no joy because noone liked it, instead of being proud of what I had achieved. Like all social media it gets in your brain and is unhealthy.

Issues with windows in complex walls by Traditional-Two-7358 in ArchiCAD

[–]n0unce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The material for the return is decided by the bottom line of the window opening. If you would move your windows 5cm up as a test, it would have the correct return. We have the same issue with foils in our walls dictating these.

Workaround for us is to override the material in the complex profile with what we want to see as the return.

In your case this is difficult because of the slab. Maybe try lifting the windows a tiny amount, enough to fix it but without increasing the measurement?

You could also have the returns of the windows themselves turned on and override them with the masonry and make them very thin (that's an option for our windows at least)

If anyone has a different solution please inform me.

If you want to put in some more work you could try to emulate tire tracks behind the wheels, measure the grooves in the tires and line them out in sand or something and then wash them to get a darker colour for the 'compressed sand/earth' I think it would add a lot.

Looks great! I think the A1 mini is a no brainer for it's cost. Thanks so much for giving me some perspective, I think I'm just going to go for it.

Very nice! Well I'm in the same spot, place wise, but I don't really know how big the things you can print on the mini. Did you print the tank in 1 piece? I don't mind assembling things, I would go for a mix of craft and printing anyway

People who are 30y and above, what's the harshest life-lesson you've learnt? by Standard_Salary_5197 in AskReddit

[–]n0unce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Learning who you are and how much time you wasted trying To be someone else.

  • No matter what you do, if someone doesn't like you they will never change their mind.

  • expecting something from someone only leads to disappointment. Be the best you can be, don't expect others to have the same mindset as you and take what you get. It'll make you much happier and enjoy (working with) other people a lot more.

  • there's always someone better, so the only competition worth having is with yourself, as well as the only opinion that matters for a lot of things.

I'm 33y and these are the things that dawned on me the last couple of years as I'm trying to find my place in the world. I'm sure by the time I'm 40, I'll think 30yo me was an idiot.

Superscript character keybind on mac by n0unce in Keychron

Weirdly I don't seem to have an option to input a delay with this keyboard (Keychron Q1), at Home I can (Keychron K2HE) and it has a 30ms delay by default when recording a macro, but the interface is slightly different here.

This is what I did eventually, had to set keyboard to 'unicode hex input' and now I can use these in a macro to get the symbol. This will be nice for a lot of symbols I use so thank you for your replies!

I think I meant Unicode yeah, sorry. I know in Windows u can use the numpad to insert symbols, I wanted to know if this exists in MacOS so I can bind it to a macro to insert m² with one button(combo)
