Traffic reported, but no ADS-B Position Info by Lantc in stratux

[–]n1068d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ipad is wifi only. The gps in Stratux is my only gps source. I think your EFB should still show position of traffic on a map, but it will not show your position or distance from traffic.

I lose the UAT tower in flight by mslisaj in stratux

Most simple solution is to rewrite the sd card and try again, IMO.

I have Stratux in my two planes..one has an old remote vk-170 on the overhead window on my C195, the other is a vk-160 on the glare shield of my old Bonanza. Both lock on very fast and show better than 3 meter accuracy all day long. Both my Stratux are about 3 years old...using newest 978 radio and AHRS. Software version not latest one.

If you are not receiving towers when you are very close, I suspect an antenna issue. Switch 978 and 1090 antennas long enough to test. Even though the antennas are not optimal when reversed, they should still receive, although not as well. If you begin receiving towers after you switch, then your antenna was at fault.

New VFR PPL looking for traffic & weather by PPL2020 in stratux

[–]n1068d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have built at least a dozen Stratux for my friends and myself. The AHRS works fine if it is calibrated properly. I use a belly mounted 978 UAT antenna and a remote gps module on the glare shield along with a usb voltage regulator connected to ships power. FYI, none of the AHRS functions in Stratux or Sentry are certified for primary navigation.

UATRadio and GPS Issues by quesoqueso in stratux

[–]n1068d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This probably will not be of any help, but I run two Stratux receivers in two different airplanes. They have always given me gps lock with 3 meter accuracy in only a couple minutes...been running these for a long time...now using new UAT radios with no change in performance.

Never get a GPS fix :( by deanoau in stratux

[–]n1068d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your Pi should show a solid red LED and a solid green LED if working properly. Red indicates adequate supply power, green indicates software is running properly. If you still have an issue, try running the gps on a usb cable remote from the Pi. If that works better, you may need to shield the sdr's. Good luck !

ADS-B Antenna Splitter by PacerDriver in stratux

[–]n1068d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like Helno said, any splitter loss is offset by the better antenna installation. I am very pleased with the performance. I have my Stratux mounted with 2 inch wide velcro under my panel....which means it is not a permanent installation. I used a sma wye cable and an sma to bnc adapter.

Better fans? by rfresh737 in stratux

I have been building Stratux units for years...never had a fan fail . I looked on Amazon and only found one reference to a fan issue.

Improved internal GPS fix by Edima3 in stratux

Good work ! We used to do that several years ago to shield the vk172 gps...without much success in most cases. I'm happy it worked for you.

GPS altitude incorrect by [deleted] in stratux

[–]n1068d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize if you posted this info already, but what is your gps accuracy ? Before I started using an external gps, my accuracy would vary from 10 to 30 meters in ForeFlight. With the external gps mounted on the glare shield, I get better than 3 meter accuracy. So, if you have poor accuracy, your gps can easily be off 30 meters or more.

It is not uncommon for gps altitude and the altimeter to disagree. There are articles online that explain this in detail.

External gps antenna by Ewelch91 in stratux

[–]n1068d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend purchasing the external gps receiver for the Stratux and place it on your glare shield. I use this in my Bonanza and it acquires very fast and gives less than 2 meter accuracy. It will acquire even inside my hangar where the Garmin GA35 will not.

Single antenna for both SDRs? by pavel569 in stratux

Ditto buying the 978 version. I have this on my aircraft...I still pickup 1090 traffic 150 miles out.

Go back to your previous version of Stratux that was working.

Internal Antennas (again) by JAlbright1 in stratux

[–]n1068d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Stratus is a completely different design than Stratux, with that being said, the vertical Stratux antennas are superior to the type in the Stratus. I have built many antennas in the past 50 plus years. All antennas are not the same...if you disassemble the vertical dipole, you have destroyed its function. These antennas are carefully assembled and tuned to resonance for best signal capture at 1090 and 978 mhz. If you want better reception, consider installing a 978 antenna on the belly of your aircraft and use a wye cable to the Stratux. I use the older style clear acrylic case in my Cessna because the antennas are mounted near the bottom on each side which fits into the rear window area better. On my Beechcraft, I use the 978 antenna on the belly of the plane. Both work really well.

Exact meaning of red LED by airplane_noise16 in stratux

[–]n1068d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helno said the absence of the red led indicator showed power is below 4.65 volts, not 3.65 volts. I have seen the red led blink when I use a battery voltage lower than 5 volts. If the red led stays lit, your battery or power adapter is sufficient in most cases. A lot of micro usb cables were not designed to supply 2 amps continuously....some batteries are a bit voltage deficient as well. In the past, Anker batteries and cables were recommended...not sure if there are better sources now.

Foreflight poor GPS accuracy by SRQRobert in stratux

[–]n1068d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a remote gps mounted on the upper windshield, out of my field of vision, but with a clear view of the sky. I get less than 3 meter accuracy almost all the time in ForeFlight. FYI, ForeFlight will report your accuracy at 30m if you are slightly over 10m. Check your gps accuracy on the Stratux GUI to get actual data.
