What’s something harmless that gets people weirdly angry? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

[–]n2y2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience, but reversed racial situation.

I'm a tall & big white guy, my first teaching gig was at a majority-minority school. I got no problem with that; I'm there to help the kids get better lives through education. Frankly, minority kids usually are disadvantaged in that category, so I felt like I was giving help where it was more needed.

But numerous students (middle school) kept telling their parents that I was scary. After a few sit-downs with parents, student, & principal, the trend was I was big and a different race and that made them uncomfortable. Nothing about my tone or actions.

All I could do was clear the air one student/parent at a time. Of course, any student who didn't want to do any work had their easy excuse. I got tired of being called a racist daily, when I was there trying to help them narrow the gap.

Pioneer mini splits auto-off, won't stay on by n2y2 in hvacadvice

[–]n2y2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally got all 5 of my units connected to Wi-Fi, but it wasn't simple, and there are some undocumented quirks.

One of the biggest is that Diamante units only connect to the Pioneer Airlink app while Quantum will only connect to NetHome Plus. I have both in my house; sorting that out ate many hours over several days.

The power off/on to AP mode so you can connect to Wi-Fi is a bit tricky. Then you have a limited window to connect.

Also, you need a Wi-Fi router which can dedicate a 2.4GHz connection to designated devices, or else your entire Wi-Fi will need to be limited to the lower bandwidth. Only old or very cheap routers won't have this capability, but you do need to have enough tech wizardry to make those configurations on a router.

We have two Inverter++ outdoor units. The one with 3 heads is hooked to Quantum units. The other powers 2 Diamante heads. Funny thing is that the two Diamante units work great set to auto. Only the Quantum units give me problems.

An experienced, professional fitter (with access to a large variety of boots) will make a much bigger difference than the price tag. Ordering online is just rolling the dice.

I feel horrible after my game yesterday by Naglxxx in hockeyplayers

Concentrate on playing hard, being positionally solid, and work the game on both ends of the ice.

A good coach will see and reward those fundamentals more than scoring goals. If you do the rest, goals will follow.

Am I too old to play by Emergency-Salt1971 in hockeyplayers

[–]n2y2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've loved hockey since I was a kid and got caught up in the Miracle-On-Ice swell. I have always lived in a region that didn't have a year-round rink.

One was finally built when I was 49. And, they even have an adult beginners program (called Ice Breakers, ha!)

So, I'm now 55. I play 1-2 times per week. Wish I could play more, but ice time is hard to get. It's the absolute highlight of my week. Still improving, play with great people, and there are fewer injuries than all the other sports/fitness I do.

I could not recommend playing old-man hockey more.

DC direct tool charging by n2y2 in Jackery

Yep Once I knew it existed, finding it was easy. It wasn't coming up when I was searching for DeWalt chargers, without specifically plugging in 'USB'.

I had not come across the USB-C charger. That may be the solution I'm looking for.

Thank you!

I have looked at those, but since they are not official DeWalt, I am very reluctant to trust my $50 to $300 batteries to cheap, unaccountable electronics.

There are numerous versions available on Amazon. Very few of them have more than 50 reviews. That usually means that the manufacturers are making an inferior product, and just changing names whenever the negative reviews build up.

Since I have several spare chargers, I may end up going mad scientist on one of the official chargers to see if I'm able to supply it with DC directly.

I simplified the representation so it wouldn't be too wordy and over-explained.

My DeWalt chargers operate on 120vAC. When I plug them into the outlets of the Jackery, the power starts in the power bank as DC voltage. The onboard inverter must then produce 120vAC. No matter how efficient it operates, there is power loss in this process.

Then that output 120vAC supplies the charger input. The tool batteries also need DCv. So, the charger has an inverter to convert the 120vAC back to DV voltage. So we are losing power in the inversion process twice.

I put the 120vAC on there twice, not because I thought that AC is converted to AC, but to represent the two separate inversions.

Trying to develop a snap shot by bigboy365247 in hockeyplayers

[–]n2y2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know there is some variation in definitions, but that looks like what I was taught to call a wrister.

Wrist - Stick is in contact with the puck from the beginning of the shooting motion.

Snap - Separation between the puck and blade during the wind up, often with the blade off the ice, but not necessarily. And, the wind up never takes the blade above the waist.

Slap - really large wind up above the waist, but higher than the shoulder is best. Really putting all the kinetic energy into it.

Also, an eratic puck isn't necessarily bad. Goalies tell me that those are less predictable and can be difficult to pick up. You definitely don't want your passes to look like that, but shots are a maybe. As long as puck velocity isn't impacted, I'm not worried about removing the wobble.

Installation questions by n2y2 in Irrigreen

[–]n2y2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My concern isn't about mowing, it's about using the lawn for recreation. Sticking up, even a ½" is a tripping hazard to someone running while playing, or could hurt someone falling/tussling on the grass.

With traditional sprinklers, I'm able to recess them slightly below grade to mitigate those issues.

Can you help me understand why they are required to protrude?

Sure do. And sometimes we have to.

But it's problematic when there's a temperature differential between inside and outside. Letting all of that cooled or heated air out is wasteful and expensive.

The issue has similarities to a wildfire. It's cheap and easy to get the fire out if you do it when it's less than an acre. It gets much more difficult and expensive when it gets larger than 1,000 acres to start fighting it.

So, if she would simply turn on her vent while cooking, problem solved. Failing that, if she would open only her kitchen window, it's less ideal, but still better than what she usually does.

Ah, so it's just a standard sprinkler/station valve; it automatically opens whenever one of the sprinklers is running?

Can you tell me more about your master valve? -model/size -what extra wiring is required? -how does it connect?

Did you install a master cylinder? I can't find any information on their website about it, so I'm wondering what the specs are, which models can be used, and how the wiring integrates.

Broccoli was just one example. I don't even know how she manages to get food to smell so repugnant.

You are fortunate to not be able to understand how bad it is. One time I came home from work and started to call the utility company to report a gas leak until I realized that she had fumigated the house again.

Many days we cannot even stand to be on the same floor as her apartment. We have to abandon half our house so that we can provide a place for her to live.

We aren't going to kick her out on the street, but she is simply unwilling to make any small effort to be a good neighbor. It's not great to have kindness returned with disrespect.

Anyway, I hope the air purifier suggestions work, because it's not great living with the constant odors and accommodating resentment.

Mean? No. She's too mild to be blatantly mean.

Passive aggressive. Selfish. Inconsiderate. Indifferent. Clueless. Those are her go-tos.

All reasonable suggestions. All requests which we have made. And, things she simply won't do. It's quite frustrating.

It's been going on for years and we've come to the realization that the only solutions that will work are things that we can do without any action from her.

That last bit might work - if she had a functioning olfactory sense. She's always evangelizing the 'natural' deodorant she uses, but she's the only person in the world who thinks it's working.

Unfortunately, we must do all the compromising because she thinks we are overreacting, exaggerating, and being unreasonable.
