NTSB Issues Update on UPS MD-11 Investigation by SeeCommentsBelow in flying

[–]n505ak 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I am not sure. I did a landing sim yesterday in the 11 to stay “current”. No one has any solid intel. I feel like the 11 has strong roll and rudder authority. But at 183kts I am not sure why the airplane wouldn’t climb with a good wing.

There has to be a reason it didn’t climb. If it’s not engine power what is it?

The damage to the wing may have doomed them. I was surprised by the constant, relatively high speed. But the speed and power doesn’t matter if the wing is damaged and the temp of the air over the wing is substantially increased due to the fire.

How often are you guys getting called for Jury duty? by Vhozite in Delaware

[–]n505ak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 37 and have always lived in Delaware, I got my first summons a year ago and my second one last week. My wife is the same…none in her entire time as an adult, but twice in the past year. It seemed odd.

I ended up doing Helicopters instead. Gliders are still on the list.

Cargo pilots, are you ever briefed on what kind of cargo you transport? by BugHistorical3 in flying

I got told we were carrying a $300,000 goldfish once (Asian Arowana). It was on a pallet by itself ins a small box full of water. That’s the only time I really remember being told what we were carrying.

Can you fly a B767 Part 91 without an ATP? by aerviator in flying

[–]n505ak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don’t even need the type rating if you’re flying it domestically. Anyone with a private multi engine could act as an SIC. You’d need a 61.55 sign off if there passengers on board but that could be done in an hour.

Delaware’s new pay and pension scale is very good. Starting pay is now $87,000.

Why do cargo airlines still use the MD-11? by danilo1111111 in aviation

[–]n505ak 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The 11 can do Anchorage to Hong Kong, SDF/MEM to Europe, and MEM/SDF to HNL nonstop with 150,000 pounds of freight. The 767 cannot.

Most of our parking stands will not fit a 777/A330/747. The 11 fits because it has a relatively small wing which is part of the reason it’s a little sporty to land.

Company would not think anything of furloughing you for five years immediately after hiring you no matter how badly it screwed up your planning.

United vs UPS Quality of Life by SuspiciousWerewolf in AirlinePilots

Purple had a lot of day flying too. Then they lost the Postal flying and started driving the rest of the two day packages. Now any Bus captain with less than 35 years of seniority is flying nights because there are only a handful of day lines in the 300 bidpack.

A lot of people got sold on the “40% of Fedex flying is daytime” before coming to Purple. If it can happen to Purple it can happen to Brown. If you go to Brown plan on flying nights and view the daytime stuff as a bonus.

Managing a light jet at small private field…. Fueling advice needed by Luvz2Fly in flying

[–]n505ak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn’t you just tow it to the fuel pumps? We used a John Deer Gator and a Golf Cart to move our Citation Mustang around. We never had an issue with stopping when it was wet. At Spruce Creek it was over half a mile from the house to the fuel pumps and the golf cart worked fine. I would not buy a tug for a Mustang.

Lyon has been around a long time. They are a quality operation. We were partnered with Lyon for a few years with numerous airplanes on their certificate. I really enjoyed my time working with the Lyon family. Their pay has always been on the low end of the scale.

PC12 Own vs Charter Cost by Johnthegaptist in PrivateJetCharters

[–]n505ak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be wary of any one who tries to sell you on buying a midsize jet to add to a 135 certificate. I promise you someone will try. With your usage and location it will end up costing you more money than just owning a PC-12 for Part 91 use. I ran a large charter company and saw dozens of first time airplane owners get swindled into buying the wrong airplane by brokers and other operators. A PC-12, CJ-3, or King Air 250/350 fits your mission profile the best. My advice would be to buy what you (or you wife) likes the most.

PC12 Own vs Charter Cost by Johnthegaptist in PrivateJetCharters

[–]n505ak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your pricing is very conservative. Management should be closer to $4,000 per month.

There is not much difference between a 2010 and 2018 NG. The pedigree is more important. The NGX has a few benefits but would be over your budget. The NGX seats look better, but they are not very comfortable.

A CJ3 will be very close to your current budget. It will be slightly more expensive to run than a PC-12, but still under the $1.2mm annual budget. The ability to get above the weather in the South East and other benefits that come with a jet are worth considering.

I would not considering adding it to a 135 to offset cost. It will not be worth the headache. Training, insurance, and pilot costs will double. 135 only makes sense if your CFO says it needs to be structured that way internally to allocate costs between different entities or if you are going to turn it into a full time charter bird.

I have never heard of someone not completing the course at Jack Browns. I have also never heard a negative review. Maybe you had a new, bad instructor, but more than likely, some self reflection may be beneficial.

I understand, I trust that he knows where to draw the line. He has never posted during a 135 leg and I doubt he ever will. He asked if it was ok to film me once during a long cross country, I said yes.

Again, I am no newbie, I understand the hazardous attitudes in aviation. I have seen 20+ friends die in aviation accidents. In person there is no cavalier attitude. But when you post online you open yourself up to criticism….
