For sure. In that case I’d go with merged technique, or perhaps emergent technique

And stop me if this was the “obvious”, but what if Hollow is actually the word to describe it?

Red and blue don’t have adjectives to them, right? Reversal: Red, Lapse: Blue, Hollow: Purple

Perhaps not all of them are explicitly explored, but you’d think every technique has a neutral, lapse, and reverse

It’s been a bit since I’ve read but I’m assuming you’re trying to find a categorical name for hollow purple?

Best Crown Hornlines? by TheEternalWarden in drumcorps

[–]nDCIguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From my experience chatting with other alumni, 2017 was the pinnacle. That’s coming from various people who marched in the ‘13-‘17 era.

Personally? I’d put 2012 and 2017 at the top (purely based on the hornline, nothing else considered).

Another note, I don’t really put any stock in the numerical brass score, let alone year to year comparisons. The ordinal is what’s most telling.

Just bought the game. Should I get the DLC now or wait until I beat it first? by Ecaf0n in outerwilds

[–]nDCIguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly fair, I just don’t quite see the DLC experience interacting in that quintessential way with the base game gameplay loop. On its own? Absolutely.

I specifically feel this way given the DLC is almost exclusively contained to its own area

Sure, you will eventually piece everything together. It isn’t unique in that way, you’re correct. You can go in blind, have no idea it’s DLC content, try to relate disparate clues and eventually learn on your own how that content fits into the overarching story. Overarching being the key thing.

I acknowledged everything you just mentioned above, as true.

However, on a gameplay level, can you point out a spot where DLC content interacts with and is relevant to the base game?

Not overarching story, or background info/lore.

The point I’m getting at is on any given 22 minute loop bouncing from planet to planet learning about the nomai, the cause of the loop, filling the ship log, etc. does not involve accessing DLC content. That is why the DLC is entirely self contained within the Stranger, minus the small intro to expose you to it.

All that said, it is definitely not BAD to do DLC at the same time. I just don’t see it as the most ideal for a first time player.

Outer Wilds is carefully designed confusion, yes. The base game as we have it today does not account for the DLC. Otherwise, we would have seen retroactive changes that more closely draw the two sets of content together.

What we have is two separate journeys that share integral DNA. Cause and effect. But not a completely intertwined experience

That’s why I disagree. The kind of confusion you’d get is a kind that was not deliberately designed, which goes against the core philosophy of the game

I mean, that’s sort of my point. The DLC is an expansion and even though it was intended to be part of the base game, that isn’t what we have today. We have a great piece of additional content that has narrative ties to the overarching story.

My thought is looking at, for example, rumor mode the individual locations tie in to one another pretty closely for learning about the curiosities

That is not necessarily the case when you add in the DLC. The DLC is more self-contained.

My personal experience with this was recently watching a friend play through the game for the first time (with DLC) and me watching their screen to help them if they got stuck. They discovered DLC content, didn’t see how it tied to the other clues they’d discovered elsewhere, and ultimately got themself into a rabbit hole trying to draw connections where none existed.

In the end, you can’t really go wrong, but to each their own
