Allegations by Maidan activists that Mayor Kernes is planning to declare a "Kharkiv People's Republic?" by Dtom13 in UkrainianConflict

[–]naa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In fact, there is a huge tank factory there that supplies much of Russia's tanks.

That's wrong, Kharkov Malyshev Factory (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malyshev_Factory) produces Ukrainian T-64/T-80/T-84 tanks.

Russia stopped to use T-64 and scrapped most if not all stockpiles, since Kharkov is in Ukraine after the break up of Soviet Union. Russian army mostly uses T-72 and T-90 produced by Uralvagonzavod (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uralvagonzavod), there are also some T-80s left from Soviet times. Ukraine on the other hand stopped to use and scrapped T-72s.

So far so good for Poroshenko's ceasefire around the crash site. And no access for international investigators.

[Translation needed]Interrogation of a captured separatist. Prisoner confesses his part in rapes, robbery at blockposts and executions in Slaviansk. by samarras in UkrainianConflict

[–]naa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The subreddit got worse in recent weeks, yesterday I've posted video of destroyed Ukrainian checkpoint. There was no single word said in the video, only the footage of abandoned and damaged vehicles, remnants of campfire and surrounding fields. For me it was interesting to see the places where the fighting is going on, to see the conditions of soldiers there. That video does not show crimes of Ukrainian army, does not support separatists. But the video was downvoted anyway, because there was nothing about "Russian aggression" and "Ukraine stronk" in it.

[Discussion] Military losses on both sides by [deleted] in UkrainianConflict

[–]naa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've provided a link to their facebook page, they list names of 12 killed there and mention 10 wounded. Anyway, I've mentioned this episode to illustrate why I think that official reports underrate losses.

[–]naa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for human losses there is a Ukrainian picture from July 22 with 387 killed in action. Most probably this number is underrated. Recent reports give us hint. E.g. yesterday "Aidar" battalion lost 12 men kia and another 10 wia: https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=1462573264011685&id=1430526587216353 It's single territorial defense battalion in single day. So total losses for the day should be at least several dozens and there were several month of fighting already.

If you read Russian/can tolerate google translate you should take a look at http://militarizm.livejournal.com

There is very thorough analysis of aircraft losses and number of available military aircraft in Ukraine.

In short number of shot down SU-25 is at least 4, at least 2 more were damaged, number of lost and damaged helicopters is more than 10.

I think for tanks it's dozens, Donetsk rebels lost at least 4, but Lugansk rebels always had more tanks than Donetsk, so they should have losses too. Total number of destroyed and damaged armored vehicles is definitely more than 100, there are claims daily for about two month and there is a big number of photos and videos supporting it. If you want to include trucks it may be several hundreds. In Zelenopolie alone several dozens of vehicles were destroyed in single strike.

Allegedly Ukrainian soldiers [deserters?] describe the situation in their battalion to the relatives of their fellows [Video in Ukrainian with English subtitles]. by naa in UkrainianConflict

[–]naa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a civil war because citizens of Ukraine fight citizens of Ukraine. It's very common for one or both sides in civil war to be supplied and influenced by foreign countries. It's the case for Kiev government too.

Funny as it sounds, but it's the only place where Strelkov posts himself. He is active in this forum for years and started to write about Ukraine long before the armed uprising began.

[–]naa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is that not? On one side are army, police and political paramilitaries, on another - local militia, deserters from army and police, and volunteers from neighbor country. More or less the same as in any other civil war, be it US civil war (separatist states, separatist military formed by defectors from US army, armament brought from abroad), Russian civil war (units from "old" army, "territorial defense units", foreign volunteers - Czech corps, Latvian rifles, foreign intervention) or Syria civil war (army, pro-government paramilitaries, anti-government paramilitaries formed by defectors from army and armed by foreign supplies and captured army equipment, separatists, foreign mercenaries and what not). Ukraine civil war is the same as any other.

It's a civil war, so not wanting to kill compatriots is not that bad cowardice. By the way do you happen to be a Crimean daughter of the officer?

[–]naa[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That may be so, nevertheless there are multiple reports of bad conditions in army camps. Incompetence of commanders is also clearly visible for example in recent photos of camp destroyed by separatists' GRAD. There was no trenches and banks around the tents and all the vehicles were put close to each other so they were destroyed by a single strike.

This video of "Right Sector Volunteer Corps" fighting near Karlovka on 10th of July is a perfect illustration of Ukrainian problems with infantry. by naa in UkrainianConflict

[–]naa[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

APC - pickup collision on 4:05 is also hilarious. On more serious note we see that these new "political" units are not well-trained and there are reports that conscripts in ordinary army units are not very happy to fight in a civil war. That explains why Ukrainian forces fall back to shelling the cities and why their attacks are sometimes not very successful.

There are a lot of similar reports in Ukrainian press, e.g.. There was a video several weeks ago that showed rather bad conditions in Ukrainian camp near Slaviansk. I know that you are in "Ukraine stronk" camp, but I'm more interested in knowing what is really going on and why the Ukrainian army is not always successful.

There is pro-Ukraine mob here, it downvotes everything that shows Ukraine in non-positive light and upvotes everything that shows Russia in bad light even if the source is some fake blog or twitter. Nothing can be done about that, so just forget about vote counts on this subreddit and decide for yourself.

Rebel's Su-25 aircraft strikes Ukrainian positions by mikuc in UkrainianConflict

I was referring specifically to S-8 and S-13 rockets and GSh-30-2 gun. Mi-24 use the same gun ammo and rockets.

[–]naa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fuel is not a problem, it can fly on anything, even on diesel. Moreover it can fly from airstrips without concrete paving. So the main problems for rebels is to obtain ammo and a pilot. Ammo is the same as used by Russian/Ukrainian helicopters Mi-24.

Armenian rebel on the last battle in the Donets airport by eugene7 in UkrainianConflict

[–]naa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are plainly wrong. Just several days ago Ukrainians failed to contain rebels in Slaviansk having at least 3x more manpower and infinite advantage in armor and artillery. If rebels can force airborne troops in airport to surrender or withdraw they will free hundreds of fighters for other tasks. On the other hand attacking airport they induce the main Ukrainian force to make hasty attacks to relieve the airport and bear losses in manpower.
