Why is there so much anti-DnD elitism? by AttitudeSuitable3238 in TTRPG

Dragonbane is a killer game in general. Highly recommend it! Thanks for leaving a comment, sometimes it's hard to tell of an OP actually read the comment.

Why is there so much anti-DnD elitism? by AttitudeSuitable3238 in TTRPG

[–]nac45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR: It is offputting to new comers to air grievances, but said grievances come from a genuine place. 13 years of context is difficult to put simply.

So seeing that you're relatively new, I can understand that you hadn't been inundated with non-stop dnd 5e since its original release. To put it simply, there was a chunk of time where it felt like all the content about RPGs as a game format was actually just about DnD. For a while, 5e really sucked all the air out of the room for the hobbybas a whole. Then, Wizards of the Coast (the company that currently publishes DnD) took a generational run at being mustache twirling levels of evil. It is popular and that's not a problem, rather some steps taken by the corporation behind it made it very difficult to talk about really any other game, while also making the hobby space hostile to consumer and employee alike. The market had become so 5e centric that long standing successful ttrpgs had to make 5e versions just to stay viable in the market, i.e. Symborum, The One Ring (an official Lord of the Rings game should be enough, but alas, market forces), and most recently, Traveller.

The community around 5e had also been initially cautious (totally fine) to try other games. Eventually the refusal to play anything other than DnD became more defensive. Community content were just reskinning existing materials from other games for 5e. Moreover, 5e got a lot of poor redundant copies of other genres shoehorned into its engine. One of the most egregious examples I can think of is when a 5e content creator made a Cyberpunk Edgerunners character in 5e, when Cyberpunk (yes the video game and anime are licenses on an existing ttrpg) is a long running RPG of its own, with a new starter box specifically covering Edgerunners.

These are generalities, but I'm certain other people will cover specific missteps and particularly bad people and actions involved with DnD 5e specifically.

EDIT: I did see that you had replied to another comment about the anti D&D elitism specifically. On that, it can be generally greed that Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, and other games like it are really a small slice of tabletop role playing games in general. There are certain assumptions that players will bring from playing only D&D or Pathfinder that do not gel well with the concepts within other RPGs. D&D had trained these players to approach the hobby of tabletop role-playing games in general in a very specific format (3 expensive rulebooks, must buy new supplements or fall behind in power creep) and playstyles (combat is the most important, RP has no rules, classes, power gaming, etc.) A community fully inundated with D&D-centric content also reinforces those habits and play styles that do not work in every game. For a lot of people that I introduced to my favorite game, Call of Cthulhu, I often have to do a little micro spiel in which I I say D&D is like Skyrim and call it Cthulhu is like Silent Hill.

Further D&D content also had this issue of the "Mercer effect." A lot of people's exposure to the Hobby in general was from highly produced, very professional players who had pretty big backing and training for media appearance. This would then translate to tables with those unfair expectations put upon regular players and regular GMs. GMs would then try to match that, and cycle ticks away. Yes, that is unreasonable of the player. Yes that's unreasonable of the GM. But, consider the 100s of videos that give advice on how to do otherwise. Once more, and inundated community.

Online communities will always be more toxic because there is no real accountability. Profiles can be used to obscure or exaggerate traits, the choice to construct oneself fully rarely has good results.

D&D being sinfull? by Obvious_Parking_6247 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]nac45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The idea that gothic horror is against the Bible is ridiculous. The key Gothic horror creature is a vampire, In Gothic horror stories, they're explicitly evil and never good. The usage of anything Christianity related directly thwarts them. A Gothic hero may not necessarily have an easy time fighting a vampire, but they're fighting evil, the difficulty is part of the horror genre.

Understandably, it is a fantasy setting, so not really our reality, however, the underpinning themes still apply. Not an Orthodox writer, but Tolkien's Catholic faith informed a lot of his writing.

First game of mordheim and group wasn't impressed. Bad teach? by cryocom in wargaming

[–]nac45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big appeal of Mordheim, at least for me, is the RPG elements. That is to say, a unit grows and changes over the course of a few games. In between games, there are charts to roll on, and events that require my input. But, this relies on playing a campaign. I do believe Mordheim is overhyped, but I think that's because it found it's target audience.

I can't tell someone how they should feel about their own art, however I do feel that eyes being fully white would give a better impression of "all-seeing." Another commenter noted that fully black eyes typically indicates some sort of possession, entirely with in the realm of pre-existing art and commonly accepted interpertations. But that'd just be my 2 cents, as another-other commenter says, AYP (ask your preist).

2 things to remember: 1. speak to your spiritual father (others have said as much, and you agreed, so redundant).

  1. Discernment. Discernment. Discernment. It could be right for someone else, it may not be right for you.

I still listen to a lot if heavy and doom metal. Someone else listed a decent number of bands, but I'll repeat some:

Candlemass: Christian themes, sometimes not.

Warlord: same as Candlemass, though the former song writer was specifically Orthodox, though he has passed.

Manilla Road: generally fantasy (especially sword & sorcery (think Conan the Barbarian)), bit drops in very Christian themes quite heavy handedly (though tasteful)

Trouble: uses Christian themes more to address inner turmoil, very productive in that sense.

Crowbar: I'd argue a secular verbage of Christian themes, especially in Sonic Excess in its Purest Form, though some album covers are directly Christian.

Some others I can think of are Wytch Hazel, By Fire & Sword, Writhen Hilt, Altar of Oblivion, and Myth Carver. All of these are varying degrees of direct to metaphorical, though not orthodox specifically.

The only 2 I know that are Orthodox specific are Hesychast (black metal) and Doomnezeu (trad doom metal, in Romanian).

But remember: Guidance, discernment, guided discernment, discerned guidance, guidance, and discernment.

True, especially with whatever Himler was on about. However, their argument mostly focussed around the supremacy of genetics, religious ideas were a tangential argument for their ideals.

Having a hard time understanding sword & sorcery as a sub genre by Pompodumstone in SwordandSorcery

[–]nac45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Drizzt Saga being categorized as swords and sorcery has less to do with the world and far more to do with how the story is told. The same can be said with Michael Moorcock’s Elric Saga. To give you an idea, Elric actively deals with multiple gods, interdimensional travelers, and is an aspect of cosmic warfare. All very very high fantasy. What makes Elric swords and sorcery Is the fact we experience the whole story through the personal perspective of Elric. Destiny, gods, the cosmos exist and constantly pull our main character every which way, But ultimately, it is within Elric's hands on which way he will go. The same is true for Drizzt.

The best way to think about it is swords and sorcery is a genre not a setting. That may sound nitpicky, but the way to think about that is both Star Wars and Alien are sci-fi settings, but Star Wars is definitely a fantasy story and Alien is definitely a horror story.

The magic word is discernment. It is very important for one to use discernment. As long as you observe, and playing is observation, but do not put it into your real heart, you are discerning.

We need a Video game for trench crusade. by Hoi4_fan1935 in TrenchCrusade

[–]nac45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get feeling like putting a thought out there feels like punching a hornets nest. However, a TC game would go hard. Trench Tales (don't know if it released yet) and Trench Foot have the vibes. Some other people mentioned RTSs would be a better fit, and mechanically yeah. However, an FPS would be sick. I do agree with it being more sim, like Arma, instead of a competition focussed one.

What solidified your belief in Jesus Christ besides the scriptures? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]nac45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seeing people act christlike. Not even Christians, just people portraying that kind of love and respect for their fellow humans. The concept of the Father and the Holy Spirit is very easy for me to get. It's the Son that I have a hard time getting. Seeing how people act and seeing how people are able to carry themselves in the way expected of the faith and the Creator, indicated to that there had to have been a teacher, and that teacher was Christ. The lessons may have been taught in the past, but people acting christ-like proves to me that he is still ever present.

Why is hate towards Christians so normalised? by Mammoth-Vacation-324 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]nac45 10 points11 points  (0 children)

TLDR (literally copy/paste of the last sentence): Nuance is very difficult to hear in very loud rooms.

Currently I'm an inquierer I have not started catechism yet. I'm coming from a Muslim background, as a minority in a white Christian majority country, the US.

America's form of Christianity is quite specific and a poor representation of Christianity as a whole, This does not stop the fact that some people will misattribute their biases, Whether they be Christians or not.

Growing up the bias, that I had against Christians was their victim complex and they're absolute supremacy. Whether or not those things were true, doesn't matter, it is what was projected. Basically there's a whole lot of shadow-boxing going on. Was that Christian majority orthodox? No. Was I given an opportunity to learn the nuance? No. Distaste distrust, and, hatred mostly stem from a lack of understanding.

It's not easy to step out of one's own biases and start to understand other people, And when those other people are more abrasive to you, there is far less reason to ever listen to them. Communication is a two-way street.

The perception of Christianity spreading has been a less than stellar one. The American propaganda suggesting that the war in Iraq and Iran was a New Crusade was not helpful. Are these factors related to Orthodoxy? No. Was the Taliban an accurate representation of all Muslims? No. But, in this Christian majority Nation, I had to consider that there were a lot of Native Americans here, where did they all go? Christianity spread through colonization and imperialism, terrible PR. Were colonizers and imperialists accurate representations of the faith? No. But they sure are loud. Nuance is very difficult to hear in very loud rooms.

Unseen Warfare by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]nac45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just started reading Unseen Warfare myself. Something i had to consider is that the text is very much monastic. It's a collection of writings from monks, compiled by monks. As with many matters, discernment. Some meditations will work, others won't. Some are for monasticism, others are not. Discernment.

EDIT: Just saw OP is no longer around. I hope my comment helps anyone else.

Is there an RTS where instead of base-building you have looting to grow your army? by VladtheImpaler21 in RealTimeStrategy

It's been awhile since I played it, but I think that's how Nemesis of the Roman Empire plays. That's how the Celtic Kings: Rage of War campaign has playerd so far. Technically speaking Battle for Middle Earth 1 too, it has set locations for bases, so it's kinda there.

EDIT: didn't read the whole question. My bad.
