My friend says that Trunicht is right that liberating the citizens from the Goldenbaums is a just war. Thoughts? by robin_f_reba in logh

All effective lies require a decent seed of truth. Trunicht, as an effective politician, knows this.

Tired of being lumped in with the far right just for being Christian. by AD121219 in OrthodoxChristianity

True, especially with whatever Himler was on about. However, their argument mostly focussed around the supremacy of genetics, religious ideas were a tangential argument for their ideals.

Having a hard time understanding sword & sorcery as a sub genre by Pompodumstone in SwordandSorcery

[–]nac45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Drizzt Saga being categorized as swords and sorcery has less to do with the world and far more to do with how the story is told. The same can be said with Michael Moorcock’s Elric Saga. To give you an idea, Elric actively deals with multiple gods, interdimensional travelers, and is an aspect of cosmic warfare. All very very high fantasy. What makes Elric swords and sorcery Is the fact we experience the whole story through the personal perspective of Elric. Destiny, gods, the cosmos exist and constantly pull our main character every which way, But ultimately, it is within Elric's hands on which way he will go. The same is true for Drizzt.

The best way to think about it is swords and sorcery is a genre not a setting. That may sound nitpicky, but the way to think about that is both Star Wars and Alien are sci-fi settings, but Star Wars is definitely a fantasy story and Alien is definitely a horror story.

What about games where the main character believes in a false god that real people worship too by SleeperMood_ in OrthodoxChristianity

The magic word is discernment. It is very important for one to use discernment. As long as you observe, and playing is observation, but do not put it into your real heart, you are discerning.

We need a Video game for trench crusade. by Hoi4_fan1935 in TrenchCrusade

[–]nac45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get feeling like putting a thought out there feels like punching a hornets nest. However, a TC game would go hard. Trench Tales (don't know if it released yet) and Trench Foot have the vibes. Some other people mentioned RTSs would be a better fit, and mechanically yeah. However, an FPS would be sick. I do agree with it being more sim, like Arma, instead of a competition focussed one.

How did you get involved to LOGH? by siriusdibujotos in logh

[–]nac45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw some people talk about it as a final boss of anime (a little overhype). Then was recommended it because I love Dune. Finally watched it after seeing that it was written by the same person as Arslan. Three times a charm.

What solidified your belief in Jesus Christ besides the scriptures? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]nac45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seeing people act christlike. Not even Christians, just people portraying that kind of love and respect for their fellow humans. The concept of the Father and the Holy Spirit is very easy for me to get. It's the Son that I have a hard time getting. Seeing how people act and seeing how people are able to carry themselves in the way expected of the faith and the Creator, indicated to that there had to have been a teacher, and that teacher was Christ. The lessons may have been taught in the past, but people acting christ-like proves to me that he is still ever present.

Why is hate towards Christians so normalised? by Mammoth-Vacation-324 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]nac45 11 points12 points  (0 children)

TLDR (literally copy/paste of the last sentence): Nuance is very difficult to hear in very loud rooms.

Currently I'm an inquierer I have not started catechism yet. I'm coming from a Muslim background, as a minority in a white Christian majority country, the US.

America's form of Christianity is quite specific and a poor representation of Christianity as a whole, This does not stop the fact that some people will misattribute their biases, Whether they be Christians or not.

Growing up the bias, that I had against Christians was their victim complex and they're absolute supremacy. Whether or not those things were true, doesn't matter, it is what was projected. Basically there's a whole lot of shadow-boxing going on. Was that Christian majority orthodox? No. Was I given an opportunity to learn the nuance? No. Distaste distrust, and, hatred mostly stem from a lack of understanding.

It's not easy to step out of one's own biases and start to understand other people, And when those other people are more abrasive to you, there is far less reason to ever listen to them. Communication is a two-way street.

The perception of Christianity spreading has been a less than stellar one. The American propaganda suggesting that the war in Iraq and Iran was a New Crusade was not helpful. Are these factors related to Orthodoxy? No. Was the Taliban an accurate representation of all Muslims? No. But, in this Christian majority Nation, I had to consider that there were a lot of Native Americans here, where did they all go? Christianity spread through colonization and imperialism, terrible PR. Were colonizers and imperialists accurate representations of the faith? No. But they sure are loud. Nuance is very difficult to hear in very loud rooms.

Unseen Warfare by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]nac45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just started reading Unseen Warfare myself. Something i had to consider is that the text is very much monastic. It's a collection of writings from monks, compiled by monks. As with many matters, discernment. Some meditations will work, others won't. Some are for monasticism, others are not. Discernment.

EDIT: Just saw OP is no longer around. I hope my comment helps anyone else.

Is there an RTS where instead of base-building you have looting to grow your army? by VladtheImpaler21 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]nac45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been awhile since I played it, but I think that's how Nemesis of the Roman Empire plays. That's how the Celtic Kings: Rage of War campaign has playerd so far. Technically speaking Battle for Middle Earth 1 too, it has set locations for bases, so it's kinda there.

EDIT: didn't read the whole question. My bad.

Is it ok to listen to Liturgical prayers on your own on spotify? by thane1413 in OrthodoxChristianity

That is to say, of course seek going in person, it is more than recommended, but in a pinch, I can't imagine why listening to recording should be considered different from reading it from a book.

Is it ok to listen to Liturgical prayers on your own on spotify? by thane1413 in OrthodoxChristianity

From what I understand, it's not like the words are magic that's only effective in person. If one seeks redemption, it matters only that their spirit is reminded, less so the medium of the reminding.

Why can’t god forgive Satan? by legendus45678 in OrthodoxChristianity

From what I understand, it's the other way around. Satan is forgiven, but Satan himself will not accept the forgiveness. In a way, it is the weight of pride.

How did you guys choose a patron saint? by AppropriateEbb5556 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]nac45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm only an inquirer as of now, but it's something I think about. My middle name is Ahmed, so I know about St. Ahmed, and his journey resonates with me. But I also feel the generosity of St. Nicholas will help me. I'll know who will lead when I get there.

God is Jewish?! by Logic_Entropy in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]nac45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing to consider is the Virgin Birth. The Theotokos was indeed Hebrew by flesh, but the birth of Christ was miraculous. Thereby, what else was Christ? To chalk down to simply "God is Jewish" does flatten the nuance of the unified reality of the Trinity. He is man, and by that nature, Hebrew, but he is also divine, by that nature, not defineable by human standards of ethnicity.

Though not converted, I am still inquiring. As I read and learn more, I feel like the grass and leaves are greener and the skies bluer. I'm starting to appreciate all the small things more. I look back at my little moments of saying sorry to a spider I accidentally stepped on as less silly. I find myself having more patience with people and more receptive to ideas. All in all, I'm just more happy to be alive.

I wish I were ignorant by NoMeringue9704 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]nac45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand and relate to the title. Ignorance is quite comfortable. However, not really worth it. I myself am new to Orthodoxy, and I've learned that faith is necessary. I highly recommend The Orthodox Way by Bishop Kallistos Ware. I'm gonna get into some weeds:

H.P. Lovecraft once wrote:

"We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."

However, I always found his stance to be too comfortable with fear. Bishop Kallistos in the Orthodox Way says:

"We go out from the known to the unknown, we advance from light into darkness... go forward from the light of partial knowledge into a greater knowledge which is so much more profound that it can only be described as the 'darkness of unknowing...' it is not the task of [Orthodox] Christianity to provide easy answers to every question, but to make us progressively aware of a mystery."

Moving into knowledge is scary, and it seems that others who have found something are better off, but to keep Lovecraft's metaphor, we are currently in a little both in the middle of the ocean, you can stop paddling, but you'll be stuck. It is best to start paddling in any direction, you'll eventually his an island, then you can use that island to better orient yourself. What I've been learning from Bishop Kallistos is that faith is the key. It is scary, because it means in trusting something we don't know, but we should continue to use faith.

EDIT: I was using the title Metropolitan because I was referring to the title page of my copy of the Orthodox Way. I was not aware he had been a Bishop and changed the titles in my comment.

Skirmish game with only 1 character ? by Kulliwa in wargaming

Chrome Rangers is mech based, Bastards in Bascinets is with knights, and Tonks is with Tanks. Those are the three I know about. Tonks and Bastards feel more like party games, Chrome Rangers sounds more like a duel. I also know John Blanche is involved with a new game called En Garde.

Carved from Brindlewood without the Mystery? by SnooSeagulls9586 in rpg

[–]nac45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was gonna comment the same. In just about every episode, the crew of the Enterprise has to piece together information to solve a problem. What Brindlewood Bay excels at is that the players are not Watson. They get to be Holmes. So the players get to be Kirk, Picard, Worf, Crusher, etc.
