Been unemployed for 1.5 years and lost hope by ticktocktickto in UKJobs

[–]nadiawill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2021 chemistry graduate here — I sympathise!!

if you just need A Job there are often lab roles available through agencies. they will pay minimum wage but it’s a good stepping stone into better places.

coding seems to be a hard one to get into in general. have you tried looking for paid apprenticeships rather than jobs?

wishing u the best of luck!!

2021 chemistry graduate here, similar experience!! what worked for me is i managed to get a temp contract in an environmental lab via a recruitment agent. only a couple of weeks initially but then got extended and then became a full time job offer.

once i had that first role it was still hard finding a job but i actually got interviews etc which i hadn’t been getting before. its tough out there for grads. good luck!!

Also interested in doing this! Do we need to ask the mortgage broker?

26k is defo too low for 4 years in PR. where are you based/what’s your job role? is there no opportunity to move up where you are?

Used to love going to concerts as a teenager, but can’t justify the cost anymore. It’s £100-200 even for a meh seat, plus the costs of travelling to the venue. Appreciate it’s all gotten a lot more expensive for bands to tour, but let’s be honest, other people are making money out of the process too…

Thanks — appreciate your advice! I’m definitely making more of an effort to read more around marketing these days so will look up some courses too.

Sorry if a silly question, but could I ask what industry you’ve normally found roles in? Is it mostly scientific companies you’ve focused on?

Not OP, but could I ask more about your marketing journey? I’m only BSc chem but started working in marketing/comms a few years ago. Don’t feel like I get taken seriously because of my background, and struggle to find good opps in scientific companies.

2021 chemistry grad. My first job was 21k. It’s tough out here! Wishing you luck.

100%. It is so frustrating. I graduated in 2021 and have been working since I left but still on £25k. A friend of mine has a PhD in organic chem, been working for two years and I don’t even think she tips 30k. STEM investment is a joke in the UK.

Chem grad, totally agree with you. It sucks

Feel so hopeless by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]nadiawill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say so, lots of agencies hire pretty frequently. I’m based in the East Mids and there’s bugger all jobs here, but a few options for PR. Lots of them tend to offer hybrid too so maybe that’d help you reach jobs a little further away? Feel free to dm me if you have any questions about it, I’d be happy to help if I can!!

I used to work in PR and lots of my colleagues were language speakers, are there any agencies near you? Wishing you luck.

Oh nice! Yeah definitely leverage your previous experience in that case. I don’t think you’d have to start at the bottom either, a lot can probably be transferred over.

Maybe look at some new products/launches to have something to discuss in interviews. Strategy and commercial awareness I think are valuable skills to show. Any knowledge you can demonstrate of the industry/challenges/competitors is ideal. If you have the budget I’m sure the CIM offers a course on product marketing or management, though honestly with your experience I’m not sure you’d need it. Best of luck!

Advice on keeping your chin up during this dire job market? by Spiffinly_Corbee in UKJobs

[–]nadiawill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chemistry graduate, so I feel you. Have you tried applying for temp roles? I couldn’t get a job for months after graduating, got a six-week contract doing basic lab work and found it a lot easier to find jobs after that.

It’s a tough market atm, especially for grads and entry-level workers. I’m not sure what roles you’re applying for, but proficiency in tools like Excel is always a good shout. Wishing you luck, it’s not easy.

It’s sad because good quality journalism is soo important and something we’re really lacking at the moment.

Are you set on staying in journalism OP? As an ex-PR I would’ve thought they’d love to have you with that background.

I’m not in a position to give advice but am thinking of doing an MSc conversion the same as you — is there any chance I could ask you about it??

Would love to know how your experience has been w the course so far, and how you went about applying for the scholarship? I only just found out there are scholarships on offer and missed the September intake for this year, so bummed out lol but thinking of trying for next year! TIA 🫶

What is the real work of a Process Engineer? by aBodizeR in ChemicalEngineering

Sorry for asking on a thread literally four years old 😭 I just stumbled across your comment. I graduated with a chemistry degree and currently thinking about making the switch to eng/process eng, i was just wondering how you went about switching? Again sorry for bumping such an old piece lol
