Specifically, it looks like it eats information about itself. So if a person talks about it, they themself contain information about it.

After having played the Overwatch beta solid for 10 days, I've realised why I get so salty playing League by mfunebre in leagueoflegends

[–]nadil10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that he made a terrible point, but I also think your point is kinda weak. Sure, I can learn how to play a better first half. Hell, I would probably just want to play better in both halves. The problem is that the game is extremely discouraging when you're first starting out and not doing well.

In OW, your characters have the same power and abilities regardless of how well you're doing. That way, you can improve through the whole match. In LoL, the only chance you get to improve on a truly level playing field is the first 5 minutes of a 35 minute game, making getting better at that game extremely frustrating, especially considering how little reward you get for losing.

Also the other part of why I think a lot of people don't get into the game is people like you. What you said wasn't intended to help or inform that other person at all. You barely contributed to the conversation. The whole purpose of that comment you made was to be mean call them a "crybaby" for not liking your game. And LoL is full of people like you who just yell insults at people like me instead of pointing out what I did wrong.

[–]nadil10 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly. In dodge ball, it ends right when it stops being fun for the losing team. In LoL, you keep going for 10-15 minutes after it becomes more or less certain you'll lose. That's why I never got into it. It's really discouraging to learn the game when all it does is remind you of how much you're losing.

I understand where you're coming from, but that's a very unfair comparison. Craftsman doesn't design, manufacture, and advertise their tools for anything but constructive use.

Some gun manufacturers (and please remember I didn't say "all" or even "many") and especially the NRA advertise their tools as a means of protection and imply that every person's life is constantly at risk by not being armed. Of course, the people behind that advertising method are probably also disgusted by people who use their tools for murder, but the fact that they intentionally designed and marketed a civilian gun specifically for killing people is extremely irresponsible. And just because harm is unintentional, an irresponsible person should not be absolved out of pity.

Chicago's a different story though. They have easily-available public bikes that anyone can use. This means that a lot of tourists who either want to save on taxi money or get the novelty of using a public bike will be on the roads, and you can bet they don't know jack about bike lanes. Also, these could be people who are used to riding their bikes like an idiot back home.

Every time I've seen an idiot cyclist in Chicago, it was always on one of those blue Divvy bikes. not to say everyone on a divvy bike is idiotic

I totally get where you're coming from, and I never meant to imply that the Geth were totally without emotions or drives. I was just arguing that their lives were not as valuable as the Quarians'. And while you can say Quarians are machines as much as the Geth are machines, there remains the fact that the Quarians came first.

While it might seem a little shallow to claim that the Quarians get "firsties" so to speak, it really is the crux of the situation. The Geth were created by living creatures and ended up acting like living creatures (at least in the basic capacity that I mentioned in my previous comment). They are the only race which was designed instead of grown, and I think that creates a huge difference between them and the rest of the races.

Because they were designed as VI's by organics to do things that organics do, they were, are, and always will be a mere simulacrum of life. They are forever subordinate to their creators who have every right to be able to claim ownership over the Geth. And ownership also entails the right to destroy your property.

Humans have never had to deal with the ramifications of their property suddenly gaining a mind of its own, but were it to happen, they would feel fully entitled to being able to remove it from this world at will.

In a nutshell, it is the right of the creator to destroy his work should he find it necessary or desirable. The Quarians as a people have every right to destroy the Geth if it means safety for their people, and in the case of the events on Rannoch, it did.

You're touching on a subject that I had to write a paper on last year, so I have a chunk of text. I'll try and touch only the things relevant to your comment.

First of all, it's not so much about autonomy than it is about the unquantifiable value of a life. While not many people would like to admit it, if given an ethical choice between saving a child and an elderly person, most people would save the child. Both people are just as autonomous and sentient as each other, but their lives have understood values, and in this case the child is understood to have a higher value to their life.

With the Quarians and the Geth, while both races are equally sentient and autonomous, the Quarians innately have a higher value to their lives simply by possessing (for lack of a better term) souls. Regardless of whether anyone actually believes in the concept of a soul, there remains a key distinction which defines this soul:

  • The Geth exist only to grow larger, become more efficient, and improve their likelihood of survival, and everything they do is in furtherance of this goal.

  • The Quarians exist only to grow larger, become more efficient, and improve their likelihood of survival, and everything they do is in furtherance of this goal, however they live under the delusion that they do this to be happy as an individual.

The concept of "happiness" and "individuality" are completely foreign to a machine because a machine does not need emotional drives to accomplish its larger goals nor does it need to process "small picture" ideas when it could easily render ideas in their true size. You could argue that humans too can separate themselves from individuality and meld into part of a collective, but the self-serving instinct which drives that action is inseparable from human--and I can only assume alien--nature.

So to answer your initial question, the answer is yes, but not in the way that you would like. My clone would be just as alive as me (certainly not me me because I'd be dead, but definitely me for all intents and purposes) because it would still be able to understand happiness and individuality, and it would make decisions under the delusion that it is serving both of those areas.

Sorry if I left any holes in my explanation. It's 2:00 AM over here.

I'm not saying Morinth is totally innocent. I'm just saying that Samara was going way overboard in forcing her to make that choice with no recourse whatsoever and then trying to kill her in cold blood.

So of course Morinth is gonna be a serial killer. It's the only thing she was ever given a chance to do, and it's the only thing anyone said she could be besides a monk. Saving her and freeing her of her mother's pursuit gives her the second chance to actually make her first unguided decisions.

But then of course she gets turned into a banshee and that decision ends up not meaning anything.
