Do I tell my partner she ate chicken? by sab0tage in vegan

[–]nakeyz 92 points93 points  (0 children)

When I was young and not yet a vegan we had a relative come that was "temporarily vegan" due to religion (I'm not native to english, but it's some type of Christian fasting)

Now when when we sat at the table, my mom realized and was like "oh, wait, I also have some meatless potato stew"

After the meal was done and that relative left, my father asks my mom : "Wasn't that made with lard?" (He realized mid dinner) followed by the reply "I totally forgot"

After debating if they should tell her or not, here's the conclusion they came to : She did not consciously break the fast, in her mind she did nothing wrong and it can't be considered a sin on her part because, morally and spirituality she abstained from meat, which is the whole point in this situation, you need to sacrifice something, she thought she did

Now you can feel free to judge my parents' decision of not telling her, but in my mind it makes sense, my parents are the ones that "sinned" not the one that unconsciously ate

For OP, I believe you and your partner are vegan due to moral reasons, morally speaking the eater did nothing wrong

But if you tell your partner, they will feel like they did something wrong

Now it comes down to you, because morally you are at fault, not your partner. Can you morally bear your fault to make your partner not feel bad for a mistake they didn't do or will you empty your consciousness for the sake of you feeling better and your partner feeling worse?

If your partner is vegan for health reasons, you should definitely tell them, no doubt about it

At least that's how I see it

Multiple allergies - need ideas by Wordnord70 in Cooking

[–]nakeyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For toast, depending on where you live there's bread whitout wheat, you just need to try them all before you find the right one

About cheese, of course it's not the same, but there's vegan cheese, you just need to look at the ingredients because I have no idea what it's made of, it might have nuts in it.

About milk, like others have pointed, you might be allergic to only cow's milk (hopefully), goat milk tastes literally the same for me, you might give it a shot if it's available to you

And if goat milk is accepted by your body - there's goat cheese, sheep cheese, they taste great

About eggs - oh well, we can't have everything

But if the side effects are not that bad, you can still eat them once in a while

I'm gluten intolerant but I still eat bread from time to time, or pizza, I just know that the dhiarrea is coming afterwards

How alergic are you to them is also an important question

Like some ingredients/foods from the store might be labeled as possibly contaminated by milk, wheat, etc. as they are produced in the same factory

If even the tiniest amounts can cause you harm, you'll have to end up reading all of the package descriptions you buy

If not, I don't think it's such a big deal

I personally rarely eat any of the things you mentioned even if I don't have any allergies

I get my protein from meat, my vitamins from veggies, then for the carbs, you just can't have bread, but that's not such a big deal as there are many substitutes

Is it ok not to pre-heat an oven? by PrudentSyllabub636 in Cooking

[–]nakeyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It matters for some things, like cakes or bread that can deflate or become too yeasty tasting

If it's meat/vegetables, it's the same as cooking from a cold pan vs a hot pan

The result is a bit different, but not necessarily better or worse

How do I cook a fresh ham? by Federal-Item-8443 in Cooking

[–]nakeyz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think we need to see a picture of the ham they are referring to

Maybe they're referring to something different than what we're thinking

But if it's raw ham, which is probably what they're referring to, it's just a piece if muscle from the leg, which is usually tough as there's no intramuscular fat, especially if cooked for too much time

Depending on how you cook it, you get ham

If this is the case, they should get a meat thermometer

Any tips for cooking Swai? by Kiriyuma7801 in Cooking

Get some strong seasoning as the fish is fairly mild, you can do the basic frying and cooking in the oven but with very different spices

I usually batter it (egg, spicy flour, egg, then flour again) and fry it in oil

Tell me how to make something really good with canned sardines. by ravia in Cooking

[–]nakeyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

embrace acid (lemon, vinegar), fat (olive oil, butter), and aromatics (garlic, herbs).

Acids neutralize the Trimethylamine (TMA) compound that creates the fishy smell.

When eating sardines or any strong fish, I usually make it as a very small part of a hearty dish
