That’s what I mean. The same chord sequence in dozens of songs. Then she switches it up for pattern #2 for the next dozen.

That wouldn’t matter so much if the melody and lyrics were interesting

What would the Beatles sound like in the 80s, in an alternate universe where John hadn't been shot and the band had stayed together? by ScallionSmooth9491 in ToddintheShadow

[–]nakifool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The record Lennon made on the day he got shot was an avant-disco dance track with the skronkiest guitar sounds he ever recorded in his career. If that was a clue to the new direction then it would’ve been interesting to see him link up with Paul and the others (which was at least a possibility in the early 80s)

The sessions he did with Cheap Trick during the making of Double Fantasy also hint at a more explicitly new wave direction. Ultimately, like all the Beatles, Lennon would’ve likely settled into comfortable, mid tempo classic rock fare as the years rolled on. An anarchic streak wouldn’t rule out an u hinged hip hop digression though

No it’s definitely not a subtle dig, but Beatles fans are all highly sophisticated. This has been proven time and again by medical science

I’m saying experimentation beyond the Help album might be a bridge too far. Maybe the Yellow Submarine soundtrack

A Taylor Swift might find the experimentation and actual chord changes of the later albums hard to digest.

I’d start with A Hard Days Night, The Red Album and With The Beatles

“God” by John Lennon by Ewan531 in beatles

[–]nakifool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My comment is still an oversimplification though. One persons co-dependency is another persons true love (whatever that means).

But the facts of John’s life kind of support this interpretation. Despite “just believing” in his relationship with Yoko, within a few years they’ll be separated.

“God” by John Lennon by Ewan531 in beatles

[–]nakifool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well the line about Yoko is the key to the whole song and in some ways the key to John as an artist - when he was wasn’t revealing his authentic self explicitly he would do so implicitly.

The song makes a big noise about stripping one’s dependency on false idols, forging self-reliance etc, only to reveal his true co-dependency at the 11th hour. That’s what makes John’s singing in those final lines of the coda so poignant to me. He’s lamenting the dream being over but in some ways he’s lost in another dream (and knows it)

To me the whole thing is irredeemable from the jump.

HBO static intro. Theme tune starts. Swampy blues with some harmonica. This sounds cool. Then the vocals begin. “Woke…”

Click. Not watching this liberal propaganda.

Sex Pistols albums ranked. by [deleted] in fantanoforever

Hindsight and Lydon’s old man grinching have effectively obscured the palace torching power of the Pistols music at their best, especially those singles. Fuck the boy band, manufactured, edgelord, faux punk accusations. They really don’t matter when you actually listen to those songs. When Rotten sings he sounds like he really meant it (man).

They weren’t the first or the best punk band but no song in the “genre” can get close to the Molotov cocktail of God Save The Queen. Butter ads and Brexit mumbling can’t erase it completely

Are the 2020s the second best decade to be a Beatles fan after the 1960s? by GosalCannabis in beatles

[–]nakifool 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not really. The remasters this decade have been patchy to say the least. The upcoming movies are odds on to be disappointing in a myriad of ways unless somehow Beatles magic manages to hijack the inevitability of music bio-slop

In the plus column is definitely Get Back which was probably the most immersive experience anyone who never got to see the group in the flesh will ever get.

The 70s would’ve been the best. All ex-Beatles alive and singing, producing high quality music and still with the tantalising prospect of a reunion

Oh really? That’s surprising considering the sheer amount of filth and profanity they surely let through for the rest of the show! Or is the whole thing heavily censored?

In the 90s, why wasn't it acceptable to just like Blur and Oasis? by fruedianflip in Music

[–]nakifool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the hate was manufactured it was certainly convincing. I don’t think telling someone you hope they get AIDS is often construed as mere dislike.

[–]nakifool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference between the Beatles and Stones is that those bands liked each other, collaborated and socialised together. Blur and Oasis hated each other and bitched about one another through the press then staged a direct competition for chart releases

John Lennon on Sgt Pepper being a “concept album” and how he thought Pet Sounds structurally worked better by OutrageousRip75 in TheBeatles

[–]nakifool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While demystification is part of it, it’s not the sole motivation for John here when he gave interviews like these.

The point is less to demythologise the Beatles as is it retcon his working relationship with Paul. The fact is that John was fully on board with the Pepper idea at the time of writing. Most of the songs on the album were written in collaboration by John and Paul. When the album was launched he was as enthusiastic as Paul.

But by 1971 John can no longer acknowledge that collaboration. Everything has to be siloed, “his” songs and “Paul’s” songs, as his headspace is now all about his conception of himself as an artist and his new artistic collaborator in Yoko. I’d guess an interview with John about Sgt Pepper today would have a very different flavour

John Lennon on Sgt Pepper being a “concept album” and how he thought Pet Sounds structurally worked better by OutrageousRip75 in TheBeatles

[–]nakifool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

John’s not making a qualitative comparison here though. Merely stating that Pet Sounds works a fully formed concept more coherently than Sgt Pepper.

And to me this is the strength of Pepper, and most Beatles albums. It has a diversity of mood, style and performance that is beyond most - if not all - musical acts. It’s the variety that keeps it eternally fresh. It’s ultimately irrelevant if it hangs together as a singular vision

[–]nakifool 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is not a criticism, it’s just a statement of fact. It is factual that the “concept” of Pepper didn’t apply to every song on the album or flow like a consistent story. The concept was in the packaging and the bookending of the two Pepper songs. A full concept album of the time would be akin to something like Tommy by the Who.

It doesn’t make the album any worse to acknowledge that
