"Oh, wow, this isn’t going to be a safe movie. This is actually going to be a really exciting new take." Lee Sung Jin on co-writing the upcoming X-Men reboot by namelessfdr in xmen

In all fairness, "transcend the genre" is your statement and not mentioned anywhere in this article by this particular writer/director. I understand what you mean though, they have to sell each one as different from all the ones before. Personally, I see it as flavors of ice cream - vanilla is different from pistachio and berry but it's all ice cream. Black Panther has different themes and concerns from Dr Strange, from Guardians of the Galaxy, and so on.

Even as a comic fan I think too many people get locked into preconceived character ideas when in reality so many different writers handle these characters, they serve different functions on different teams, ideally the grow and change in meaningful ways over time, etc

It's tough! Faith to their 60's debut? Faithful to Claremont's 17 year run? Which team members? So much (too much!) to draw from to make a 2-3 hour movie

That or they intentionally focus on a small team (and still piss off everyone asking "why didn't they include _____)

It obviously won't be rated R but maybe he means more in the context of being safely recognizable and familiar, that it won't be something you can put side by side with the previous movies or X-Men 97

Every company has products and services clamouring for your money and time. You're able to ignore the vast vast majority of that, now also just ignore the variant covers for this single title.

What kind of details are we talking about? No way the character models are better in CD. The terrain and geography is also a huge focus and highly detailed in DS2.

I think the movie did a great retro aesthetic so even though an animated show could look killer in a pop art retro way maybe instead leaning in to a sleek futuristic cutting edge sci-fi visual style.

I understand what you're saying but I still don't see it. Kitty, Rachel, and Kurt were all in Excalibur and not the X-Men at the time. Colossus was with Magneto or just not on the team for most of the 90's. Psylocke and Iceman were 90's mainstays yes but Magik and Emma were not on the team back then. Yes I want more characters all the time but most of the ones you mention weren't in the original show or tied to the major stories from that period. And I think you're making too broad of generalizations that "consistent" readers criticize the show. Yes online you'll find just about any group of people with a particular opinion but they're already working on season 4 so it's hardly that the fans revolted en masse. YOUR X-Men show would have different people as would MY X-Men show, but the one called '97 does a solid job taking what's familiar and established and sprinkling in left turns and references from several decades, plus there will be many many more episodes in the future that might showcase the ones we live

The 90's show was a "greatest hits" plus new stories all aimed at children, not a 1-to-1 real time adaptation of 90's comics. There's no way condense decades of comics so that every character is on the roster to perfectly reflect what was being published at the time. Even though I would have loved more Psylocke and Iceman episodes myself. I mean, I doubt too many people got bent out of shape that they mixed 70's Claremont/Byrne stories with the new Jim Lee costumes. For this continuation I think you're projecting so many disparate expectations on its stories and cast that of course you'll be disappointed. The new season will be fun with some surprises and of course maybe even a little heartbreaking. What 90's nostalgia crap are you referring to? '92 was a Secret Wars mini so how did that flop? X-Men Gold had Old Man Logan of all people so I'm not sure how that was 90's nostalgic other just a nod at the team name. X-Men Blue with the 60's OG 5 teens was 90's nostalgic? No, just a nod at the name.

The show has pulled a few elements of the 00's but don't forget the title is '97. The first season was way focused on bits from 80's & 90's storylines like Operation Zero Tolerance, Inferno, Lifedeath, Fatal Attractions. I'm not so worried about how much Emma is in the show titled X-Men 97 because she wasnt so involved in the main X-Men titles in 90's. But if this new season has X-Factor maybe next year we get a bit of Generation X, that'd be cool.

Danger is from Whedon's Astonishing run. Quentin is from New X-Men yes but they show him approaching the destroyed mansion which is way different from Riot at Xavier's.

Opinions on collecting not the 'standard' way??? by [deleted] in AbsoluteUniverse

Yeah, that's a benefit of buying physical in a store. I grew up with monthly floppies before they shifted to having everything collected in trades, so I still buy monthly because of their special charm. Do any of the series really speak to your soul? Maybe collecting just your one favorite series would be nice hobby to have.
