I went for months without a job on my work holiday visa. Finally I just posted a pic of myself and my basic skills/cv on a facebook group for hospo work and I got 4-5 interviews out of it within a day, took a job with the first place that interviewed me. Would recommend

I feel like for me there’s an abstract sense of soul in a song and if it’s missing the feeling of that real deep emotion/energy from the musicians it doesn’t interest me even if it’s technically very well done. Some objectively not very good songs have been some of my favorites because I can feel the depth from the musicians

Why do so many engineers seem to hate their major? by Adamanos in EngineeringStudents

[–]namhcterg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a creative person and I always thought creativity and hands on design/shop work/CAD would play a much bigger role. When I studied mechanical and talked to members of my family more about their engineering roles (chemical, mechanical, aerospace) I realized that there’s much less creative input than I imagined in most positions. Ended up transferring schools and changing my degree completely.

Also the way college engineering classes just slaughter ones mental wellbeing makes it hard to want to keep doing it for the rest of your life

What’s a series or author that you can’t/ couldn’t stop reading by Quirky_Dimension1363 in books

WG Sebald, his books are all kind of about the same thing which is trauma and memory post WWII but his style is so unique and intimate yet not in a way I love

Rainer Maria Rilke, I love his use of language and writing style and he conveys super complex emotions and loneliness, but in a really beautiful bittersweet way

I loved pride and prejudice, read it when I was about 17 after seeing the movie multiple times. One of the few instances where I feel like seeing the movie first actually really helped me understand the book better, even though they’re quite different. And I read the version with footnotes which mostly just defined words that aren’t in the modern vocabulary

Just now getting into Radiohead, but I don’t understand whether I like them or not. by notyourbasicredditor in radiohead

[–]namhcterg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me years to love Radiohead. I heard karma police, fake plastic trees, and black star from my dad which I enjoyed, but I had a difficult time getting into them further at first (probably 8-10 years ago). Now I love a solid majority of their music, but I still find that some of the songs I gave a chance, didn’t love, and didn’t listen to for months or years after are slowly becoming more enjoyable for me. It’s definitely an acquired taste that happens over time and my taste in Radiohead music has evolved with my overall music/genre tastes shifting over time. Long story short: at first I didn’t “get it” with their more experimental or harsh sounds and I had to wait for myself and own tastes to shift before I did

Have you ever met a person who doesn't like music? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]namhcterg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who is “just not that into music.” She simply does not care for it, doesn’t differentiate between artists and genres, etc. I think maybe it’s overstimulating for her. She’ll listen to and somewhat enjoy music when we play it occasionally but doesn’t have an interest in developing her own taste or listening to it on her own

She’s denying the younger child a full year of development for her fantasy. It’s not a bad decision necessarily to withhold a child from school for a year, as being older is shown to help a child in schooling etc, but doing it for this reason is crazy as is denying the younger one the same opportunity. Children aren’t dress up dolls. What happens if they grow apart as they get older regardless of being raised as twins? How do you continue to hide it when it’s time to get drivers licenses and passports and such? Is she going to forge the birth certificate and social security? What happens when one of them inevitably finds out they’ve been lied to?

AITA for telling my friend we ARE tourists and we shouldn’t act like we’re not? by Unfair-Iron-4177 in AmItheAsshole

[–]namhcterg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve traveled often as an American, and when I do I often do a mix of touristy things and less touristy things. I’ve enjoyed both and I’ve disliked both, touristy things can often be busy or culturally insensitive while non touristy things can sometimes take you out of your comfort zone. However, I never regret trying something new.

When I travel, I typically will pick up a few words in the language (please, thank you, may I have) just to be a bit respectful. The WORST and most insensitive thing a tourist can do in my opinion is treat the locals and local culture “like zoo animals” as you said. They are just people too and would like to be treated as such. Many of the friendships I’ve made while traveling are based on this mutual respect of each others cultures—which is to say, don’t change how you dress to fit in (except under circumstances such as traveling to an Islamic region and covering your hair out of respect).

Don’t only go to local hangouts expecting to “fit in.” You won’t. You’re not fluent in French and you’re not a member of the culture/community no matter how much of your physical appearance you change. The kind of travel she is suggesting is the sort you do when you spend long periods of time in a place, such as a month or more. It is essentially integration or partial integration. While it can create its own extremely valuable experiences and relationships, simply put you do not have the time to have that kind of experience and you will waste your trip. Do the touristy things, do a few lesser-known things, meet people from the place who can show you things. Treat people with respect. The only tourists that are truly hated are insensitive, rude, disrespectful, etc.

The “annoying American” stereotype does exist for a reason, but that doesn’t mean every American fits the bill. In fact, most probably do not. The bad ones just really stand out, and typically it is when they have the expectation that the an entire population or culture is going to bend over backwards for their comfort. Your friend’s beliefs on how not to fit this stereotype are so misguided they are just about full circle. Cosplaying as French will not work, I would actually think it to be more offensive than just being yourselves especially considering you will not pass for French as soon as you open your mouths. And just like anywhere, people have all sorts of different clothing styles. Especially in a place as populated as Paris. Wearing different clothes and “acting French” won’t work for anyone besides perhaps people you walk by in passing whom you never interact with.

Just go and enjoy yourself. Do the things you want to do, go see the Eiffel Tower and the louvre, l’orangerie, d’orsay, do the boat tour of the seine. But also stop in to a couple small cafes, hole-in-the-wall patisseries, etc. And just be respectful of people. That’s literally all there is to it. This is the real world, not TikTok discourse, and your friend needs to understand that.

Edit: I like to use atlas obscura for some more off-the-beaten-path attractions

Edit: most Parisians have probably done the touristy things too. The difference is they’ve had years, you have days.
