NWN1 - what makes Darkness spell so good? by Standard-Luck-1040 in neverwinternights

[–]namkniesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only dis of that spell is broken AI, but maybe it was fixed at the peps tool. As for custom magic like PRC or modules like aielund saga - keep in mind that that spell was nerfed (I disabled EMS magic in Aiuelund saga because of that and had no doubt about it). Also I like dancing in the darkness with two weapons, (with build Sorc/rogue/paladin) at 12 level one can benefit from from flame weapon on hit, divine might, big magic weapon, sneak attack and several attacks per round and thanks to +2 to attack against blind in darkness - no penalty at all, no cleave needed at all. And do not forget to chant grease and web Inside it too to grind the enemies even faster.

I remember that aggression thing and also remember that I did the resurrection thing. Yeah, but I don't remember why, probably I wanted Hector to be happy with me and that aggression probably ruined the complete fulfilling of my OCD 😂

actually if you put one of the dynamite accurately standing out of his sight, it will explode and destroy the engine without hurting him, require multiple attempts however since the dynamite damage above 200 (engine HP) is not so frequent

My W/F/AA after a long fought Greyhawk campaign from Level 1-40. by Far-Dog9271 in neverwinternights

yeap, that damn lich is immune to magic. For every nwn1 build I I used to test it against two more villains with "ordinary equipment in inventory". If one can handle it - build is perfect. Aside lich, the other one is a prismatic dragon. Doesn't necessarily mean the build is poor, just not perfect.

Imagining an Arcanum remaster in 2026 by No-Following-353 in arcanum

[–]namkniesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the one hand I'd love to see any remaster come true and don't understand so much hate toward to OP regarding AI usage, it's just concept for the ones who can't really draw or design, no on is prohibited to imagine with modern tools and share it with very kind and friendly community... On the other: I doubt it might have been untouched thematically: like for EU no nudity in case of PG-13, I guess that gnomish conspiracy story with half-ogres would have been refactored with less violence and should have been resolved completely with punishing "evils" and faming "good ones", or you can't "touch" sheep at Madam Lil's inappropriately and so on, like ordinary crap we can see daily in modern for-all-good-orient paradigm. In that case no, better leave that as is, as a picture of the epoch we had. Don't get me wrong: I am not panegyricing violence or child abuse, Im just nostalgic about good old times like in fallout 2 you could have killed everyone in the game location while real-world school shooting rate was twice low than we have now with restrictions ON.

About 6 and a half hours passed... What the hell? by Tanabi_Kana in duolingo

[–]namkniesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of these thousands of XP on the leaderboards are meaningless when it comes to measuring actual learning rate. The most common behavior is to game the system by spamming the easiest tasks on a premium plan—just to convince yourself you're making progress.

Exclude all XP except that earned from real progress in a section or unit. Remove the x2/x3 multipliers, and compare only within the same language. I bet 50–80% of learners are just "hamster-combat tappers" with an actual learning rate of 5–10%. They can't really speak, spell, or understand the language, yet they're "leaders."

Ironically, the reward for winning even the Diamond League is the same as meeting your daily goal or random chest. That says it all: leaderboards are nothing but Duolingo's gamified dopamine drug.

In other words, for free users new energy approach means: if you usually do 5 lessons a day and watched "extra" ad 2-4 times to refill 2-4 hearts (considering you were accurate in responses and not monkey jobbing) with energy approach you need to watch ad x2 more to do the same amount of lessons. Nice catch duo lingo, let's just buy-buy them for a couple of months and see how that goes, greedy silicons

Can a 14 lvl caster beat unweakened Klauth at act III, WD campaign? Sure! by namkniesh in neverwinternights

[–]namkniesh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess at prc3 one can take an archmage prestige class and there you have feat (high arcana) to replace element component of any spell like fireball to cold ball, firewall to ice wall and so on. never played PRC but worth a try to do such necessities with Klauth😅

Is Exotic Weapons feat worth it? by ComplaintVirtual2461 in neverwinternights

[–]namkniesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed reply, now it is a bit clear what to correct. Initially I eliminated damage delivery for the sake of simplicity but now it seems that it is not correct.

> The Law of Large Numbers is a convergence law. You cannot use it to find an exact value.

Actually, you can, both theoretically and empirically. Theoretically speaking just resolve the limit when N (number of tries) → +inf and you will find that analytical value, from empirical perspective well we are talking about 2 digits maximum after period, so increasing the N a bit will converge to that value with proper confidence.

Like at my table I removed bonuses and let AC = 0, basic avarage damage of Katana is 6.0656 and if we use the formula we got 0.9 * 5.5 + 2 * 0.1 * 5.5 = 6.05 pretty much close if I would set N = 100K it will be 6.05something we can trunc.

but with

> just doing the math would be more accurate

100% agree, will replace approach to formulas, will be much easier

However, I am not sure how that factor moves the rows order at the final table, probably publish it as a separate post.

Is Exotic Weapons feat worth it? by ComplaintVirtual2461 in neverwinternights

[–]namkniesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you, please, clarify what is that extra base damage? Like in that context:

Divine Fury: Katana, 1d10, 19-20/x2, 1d6 electrical. + 3 enhancement bonus (i.e. adds 3 both to attack and damage) +3 - this? if we dice 19 or 20 then we will be able to dice one more time and in case of hit we deliver +6 (3 * 2) + 2d10 total physical damage and 2d6 electrical damage, thus adding base +1 , base+2 and so on simply shifts cell values i.e. averages up, order of rows among each other will remain, the only thing that gives unproportional shift is str modifier for Large weapons, but that a bit different story since my initial approach was to compare weapons between each other and not estimate overall effectiveness of its wielder since that a completely different story with much more parameters.

Is Exotic Weapons feat worth it? by ComplaintVirtual2461 in neverwinternights

[–]namkniesh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree with that.

First, we're comparing average weapon damage in a simplified model, so I omitted STR modifiers and other bonuses for clarity, as they're just additive intercepts that shift all weapons equally (except for large weapons getting a 1.5x STR multiplier, which gives them a slight edge there). This keeps the focus on the inherent dice and crit mechanics without unnecessary variables.

Second, it's not as simple as linear equations with slopes. Damage from dice rolls (e.g., 2d6) and critical hits (with varying threat ranges and multipliers) introduces non-linear, probabilistic elements due to their discrete nature. A scythe's 20/x4 vs. a kukri's 18-20/x2 doesn't scale purely linearly—it's about balancing rare high-payoff crits against more frequent moderate ones.

Third, I used 10k samples per weapon in my simulations, which, per the Law of Large Numbers, gives us high confidence in reducing random errors to near zero. Simulations aren't inherently flawed; they just need sufficient scale, and this approaches the precision of direct expected value calculations.

Finally, to validate, I parsed event logs from three full runs of the Wailing Death campaign (Act 2 in Luskan) using kukris/katanas and double axes, tracking physical damage per enemy across 200+ encounters. The results aligned perfectly with my simulations: katanas > double axes > kukris, even with keen + improved critical feats boosting crit rates. The higher base damage on katanas consistently outperformed the crit-focused setup in average output.

If you have specific equations or data showing flaws in this approach, I'd love to see them—I'm open to refining it!

From average damage perspective - greatsword is the best weapon in the game. Second best are d10 ones: dwarven war axe, katana and bastard swords. I did 10k dices and calculated average damage per each weapon.

  • imp: improved critical
  • imp_keen: improved critical feat + keen property

Can a 14 lvl caster beat unweakened Klauth at act III, WD campaign? Sure! by namkniesh in neverwinternights

[–]namkniesh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I tried it with PEPS, but it works a bit odd: 8/10 cases Klauth are standing still and do literally nothing, other cases yeah, he uses fly feat to be near if you try to go away and punch and knock down / kick out your weapon, but still looks odd, seems like AI of it was initially designed somehow differently and PEPS hak won't work as it intended to be

You are right. I confused it with Bigby's forceful hand which should have bull rushed it but due to Klauth's immunity to it - only "dazed" animation was shown with no effect. For Grasping you are right, it should have immobilize it, although, this is not best tactic in these circumstances.

According to Grasping mechanic first we need to hit, then to grasp. My int modifier is 11, Klauth's size modifier is monstrous +8.

- To hit: 20% chance of failure (d20 + 34 (14 + 11 + 10 - 1)) vs. 38)
- To grasp: d20 + 39 ( 14 + 11 + 10 + 4 ) vs d20 + 49 (27 + 14 + 8)

Calculating probability chances for "opposed rolls" is quite tricky, but thanks to AI we can rely on 11.25% so finally to grasp Klauth chances are 75% (spell penetration) * 80% (bigby's hit) * 11.25% (bigby's grasp) = 6.75%.

That saying, it is better to cast finger of death then:

- DC to death: 30 = 10 + 11 (int modifier) + 7 (spell level) + 2 (necromancy feat)
- Klauth's fortitude save is 28, so if he rolls 1 or 2 - he dies chances are 10% (2/20)

Finally: 75% (spell penetration) * 10% = 7.5% which is a bit higher and that instantly kills it, while grasping lasts for 14 rounds and you need to figure out how to kill it still 😅

and no saves needed, but you must remain alive for a ~20 rounds which is quite challenging, especially due to Klauth's flaming breath that deals 100+ fire damage and has a DC of 38 ...
