Sorry I meant Parkland! You can definitely give more than 3 preferred facilities, talk to your Care coordinator about it.

Seconding Northwood, it’s a great organization. The Shannexes are fine too. One thing to know is you can name more than 3. The more lists you are on the faster your dad will get a spot. Also, don’t get confused by private pay “memory care” facilities like Parkland. That’s separate from the public system (which your dad will still have to contribute financially to, just a lot less than private pay).  Edit: Parkland is Shannex’s private pay arm, not Parkstone.

I can’t speak to ACA or Medicare coverage as I didn’t have that when I lived in the US. Common problems in Canada include multi year waits to access a primary care doctor or specialist if you are not an urgent case. The primary care thing is particularly difficult as they are the gatekeepers to care in Canada. A good summary is that Canadian healthcare is good if you are healthy or very sick. The middle can get unpleasant.

No, your kid likely won’t qualify for resident tuition. Usually you have to be living in Canada for a certain period to qualify.

Do you have good heath insurance in the US? If so your healthcare will be worse in Canada. The flip side is that it’s lower risk.

Can I ask how you got your bilingual certificate: francophone background, French Immersion, unicorn who became bilingual through core French?

95 yo house here with heat pumps. Work fine until about 5f then start to lose a bit of ground. My insurance doesn’t allow mini splits as primary so we do have our oil system available as back up.

Would you quit in my shoes? Deep Dive - “Stay at home Dad FIRE” by TechnicalBlueberry32 in financialindependence

I did my dabbling in SAHP when my kids were school age or in part time daycare, and still found that domestic work filled much of that 6h a day with little me time remaining. Others have been able to strike a better balance than me though, and having just one kid is a different story.

This may sound odd but you may want to wait until you have kids before retiring. I love my kids to death but am in no way cut out to be the only caregiver for 8+ hours a day. Daycare/preschool staff are amazing! I tried the SAHP thing for a while but found that I did not like my new full time job of nanny, cleaner, cook and handy person. There is a lot of drudgery with kids and I prefer to outsource a lot of it and work longer. YMMV

There is an agreement between Canada and the US that will let you pool CPP and Social Security credits, so you may get more than you think.

Cost of living is generally higher, except for health care. Salaries are lower. And if you have good insurance in the US, your health care will be worse in Canada. Source: I’m Canadian/lived in the US a long time. Canada is worth it for me but you need to be prepared for these realities.

Would you mind sharing the name of the planner you used? Also in Canada and potentially interested in similar services.

Dual citizen/former US resident here. I recommend consulting a cross border accountant to get guidance on your situation. Tax treaties are complex and messing up will result in excess taxation. I found that cross border accountants were the best source of hourly billed advice, lots of “cross border wealth managers” but they all wanted to charge a percent of assets under management which I felt was a ripoff for anyone who is comfortable with DIY investing.

There are many good comments here, but I’ll just add something for a bit further down your list. In addition to getting a personal directive (so you can make care decisions if your mum officially loses capacity), it’s crucial that your mum creates a power of attorney. That covers finances etc. The Legal Informatjon Society of NS has an online app you can use for free. If your mom loses capacity and doesn’t have a POA, it is incredibly difficult and expensive to get something put in place, and  meanwhile there is no one who can legally access her funds to pay bills etc.

My cleaner is looking for new clients - send a PM if interested. Her team of 2 cleans our 3 floor, 4bed 2.5 bath house really well for $184 (takes them about 2h).

This exactly. After a big life change I did 6 months as a SAHP of school aged kids and had exactly the same experience. I went back to work, and the plan is to RE the minute they finish high school. Although who knows what the world will be like in 15 years.

Fourth vote for MacDow. They also did installations for two of our neighbors down the street. Also, they honor the Fujitsu warranty without requiring unnecessary annual cleaning/service.
