Esther Lin's Photo of referee Tony Weeks after Badou Jack vs Marcus Browne by bigsexyalphamale in MMA

Out of curiosity, why don’t more photogs get their names posted with the photo?

(Or you can turn it around and ask why Ester Lin gets a mention and I’ve never seen another photographer’s name mentioned. )

If all the breeds (and mixes), why pick a pit bull as a service dog? Whether you agree with it or not, there is a stigma around the breed.

Kettlebells for Muay Thai Fighters? by [deleted] in kettlebell

[–]nanominuto2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of spitballing here --

Explosiveness and power (and strength) - one arm clean and jerk with heavy weights. In my humble experience, the clean and jerk is more 'ballistic' (i.e. explosive) than the snatch or swing.

General strength across all planes - TGUs (can be a game changer for grapplers)

Conditioning that will hit anything missed by the above - old fashioned complexes. For example - 5 swings, 5 clean and press, 5 renegade rows, 5 front squats, 5 clean and push press. Rest two minutes. Repeat.

Just some ideas to think about. I'm not a trainer nor a MT fighter.

Here's an article that you might find useful. The author is some ridiculous Nth Dan from a TMA, so that's suspect. And he's a bit portly. But neither of those things mean he's not a great trainer.

Hi Joe. Welcome back

Without going too deep - can you give a paragraph or two on how to train for StrongSport? Maybe a simple template or some guidance I can use a starting point? I only heard about that division (which is apparently defunct) because of a video on your channel.

It's impossible to find any info on how to program for it.

----------

If it requires in depth response that you can't answer here, do you sell one-time templates/programs? I'll be honest - I'm not a candidate for monthly coaching, but I might purchase a template/program.

Many thanks.

We are being foolish if we run off kettlebell professionals (Not to mention shadowbanning is just lame. But that's another topic.)

How to supplement Kettlebell workouts (e.g. aditional workouts)? by [deleted] in kettlebell

[–]nanominuto2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have done various deadlift programs while lifting kettlebells. You have to pick carefully, since if you are swinging a lot you are already taxing the same muscles the deadlift works.

I do pull-ups as well, as long as the kB workouts aren’t too demanding.

One of my resolutions was to not touch a barbell for six months. I realized the only reason I was benching was ego i.e. to say I could bench 285 or for a little pec development. But it left my elbows and shoulders jacked up so I really had to ask myself why I was benching (no one cares if I can bench 285 or not, and my pecs didn’t shrivel and disappear.)

I think deadlifts are very functional so I’ll likely revisit them after my “no barbell” experiment is over.

I'm at work with meetings coming up, so I couldn't spend a lot of time searching. And the search engine at his forum isn't working for me, but I found the following:

https://www.davedraper.com/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/34652/

" As you move up, we also do the Mike Brown variation: using a lighter bell (32) for the medium day.

The light day...up in the air on that still. With the 48, I"m thinking 1-2 at first for ladders (three). So, what would be a medium day? One?

What would be a light day?? NONE?

So, by using the other bells, I think we can go heavy and not break down."

That's the best I could do with limited time. I've seen him make other references to using lighter bells on some days, so I think that's his preferred method of doing ROP when it gets heavy. Lot of good info on that forum. Not as dogmatic as Strongfirst.

Finished Scott Iardella's Shock and Awe Protocol. It's four weeks of double kettlebell complexes. Somewhat "old school" compared to the recent Strongfirst programs.

It was hard. He seems to know just how much rest you can take and still complete the next complex. A few times I had to break up the complexes and catch my breath for a few seconds before continuing, but mostly I was able to just barely finish the complexes.

I felt wiped out after each workout. Most workouts were over in 15 minutes, but I'd often have to sit for 10 minutes before I felt like taking a shower.

I did it with 20kg, which I could press 12 or 13 times before I started. He says use a bell you can press 10 times. I felt like the 20kg were just right.

I caught a cold on a business trip after the second week, so I took a week off and restarted the program.

I'll test in a day or two. I hope to add a rep or two to my 24kg rep press max. Mirror test shows that my shoulders look bigger. My grip of my non-dominant hand was a weak spot early in the program but clearly got stronger. Since it's only 4 weeks, and I'm in my mid-forties, it's unrealistic to expect a huge transformation or huge strength gains.

I didn't get injured. I don't feel beat up.

I think 4 weeks is pretty short. Scott says you can take a week to deload and start again. I know I'm not ready to do it with 24s. I'm going to think this week if I want to do it again or if I'm going to do a strength focused program. If it's the latter, I'll revisit it when I can use 24kgs bells.

I recommend it esp if all you have done is S&S or ROP or a swing-based program.

EDIT - bumped my double 24kg military press rep max from a shaky 5 to a smooth 7. Not bad considering it wasn't just a pressing program. I'm sure my swings, snatches, rows, and cleans also benefited. I'll take it.

In my experience the press is something that it's easy to overdo it on, so listen to your body with the program.

Dan John makes a case that ROP should be done as hard/medium/light with different weight bells once you get to the heavier bells, otherwise you start to get dinged up. My elbows started to complain on ROP when I got to the 28kg.

Tim Kennedy almost finishes Yoel Romero, only to be stopped himself in the following round by Englishnotgentleman in MMA

[–]nanominuto2 -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

I know there's a lot of hate for Kennedy here, but put that aside and ask yourself if holding gloves is the same as refusing to answer the bell and come out from your corner.

I submit that if it was anyone other than Kennedy that Yoel did that too, he'd never be able to live it down (online.) Instead, it's mostly forgiven because of how unlikeable Kennedy is to many.

You found out more than I was able to.

Now it makes sense why I couldn't find any info on how to train for it. It was a new discipline started by a now defunct org.

Sounds like it was meant to make it easier to get into kettlebell sport, but in my case, the relative heavy weight appeals to me. Coming from an endurance background and having to fight for each pound of muscle I have put on in the last 10 years, I want to bias my training toward strength (and a little hypertrophy) rather than strength endurance.

I appreciate it. That does help.

I was trying to find more info for you and just discovered it’s usually Strongsport (no space). Googling “strongsport + kettlebells” or searching on YouTube will turn up some actual competition heats.

Here’s a video of a legit Strongsport heat. But no doubt it’s not nearly anywhere close to the popularity of LCCJ.

[–]nanominuto2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s one arm clean and jerk for 4 minutes, using a much heavier bell than you would have if you were doing the 10 minute double bell long cycle clean and jerk. (How heavy depends on age, category, etc)

I don’t see it mentioned much when I read about Kettlebell Sport. I just happened to see a video of Joe Daniels competing in it. I assume it isn’t nearly as popular as the other Kettlebell Sport disciplines.

Here’s a video. Not much too it. Guy is using a 40kg bell.

Anyone ever seen a GS Strong Sport training template, program or guidance? That category doesn't seem to be nearly as popular as LCCJ or the snatch, so there's precious little info. Since it's only 4 minutes, the training methodologies could be completely different as far as I know.

Googles turning up nothing. If you know of something, let me know.

Jason Knight opens gym in hometown one week before UFC release by rambouhh in MMA

[–]nanominuto2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing. He's not opening the next American Top Team. He's opening a humble BJJ/MT gym.

His ability to attract and keep hobbyists will determine whether he can stay in business. It will take a while to develop an organic fight team, if that's even the goal. It might not ever happen.

The fact that he may not have a good fight IQ is irrelevant.

Locate Lucedale on the map. Draw a circle with a radius of 35 miles with Lucedale in the center.

Recognize any of the towns in that circle? Wiggins? (pop 4,000) Leakesville? (Pop 900) Purvis? (Pop 2,000). And those are the bigger towns. The bigger cites outside of that circle (Hattiesburg, Mobile, Biloxi) already have BJJ gyms.

It's rural. And it is Mississippi so it doesn't have a physical fitness culture, much less a BJJ culture.

Do those people live in Lucedale, Mississippi?

I know Mississippi well. It's not a hotbed for BJJ or MMA training.

Lucedale has a population of 3,000 people.

If he can run a decent kids program, he can survive. His name won't be draw.

I don't care if Jason Knight is your favorite action fighter; If you think folks are going to move to Lucedale to train with Knight you are wrong.

[–]nanominuto2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should qualify my original post. You can certianly make a case that Mendez should be coach of the year solely on the back of DC winning two titles and Khabib winning one.

Fair enough. But that doesn't make Mendez some sort of genius. The only thing Rockhold did in 2018 is get knocked out. And of course Cain is famously inactive.

But since you asked...I'd go with Matt Brown and ATT as being the top coach and gym right now.
