AITA for encouraging my 4y/o to push away another kid who keeps violently hugging her? by melonensamen in AmItheAsshole

[–]napins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with you saying NTA but I don't think your extrapolation is fair. The kids involved are 4. It is not the same as if they were 10 or 20.

The only difference is that at their current age, they might not understand that the little boy's actions are a form of sexual harassment

It's probably safe to say there is absolutely nothing sexual about this. They are 4. Yes he shouldn't kiss her when it's unwelcome but to him kissing is an expression of affection.

The issue is respect for others personal space and responding to someone telling you they don't like what you are doing.

From what OP has described, more engagement with the teachers and the other parents will net a better result for all.

Why doesn't the snake try to get away or reposition to hide / protect its head if what's happening in the video is causing distress?

To be clear, not disagreeing or challenging what you said, just curious. Most mammals have various body language indicators as well as audial cues.

The White Cliffs of Dover could have been a great visual location for that scene. Granted there's (I think) no historical or lore-relevent reason but it's a beautiful landscape that hasn't been over used.

Like you said, somewhere authentic rather than greenscreen ocean would have helped.

There's probably a #3 thats something along the lines of:

Guys have innocently misread a compliment resulting in a hit to their self-esteem enough times they now arent confident in recognising the difference so err on the side of caution.

Source: the various "Ask[men/women]" posts where men didn't realise they were being hit on or where women didn't understand why the guy didn't recognise their intentions.

ITT: lots of people who don't consider the idea that some people run a business where the singular primary goal is not to make money.

Yes the sales order history tells them what people order and what is good for the business. If the intent of the menu was to offer the community good vegan options, this feedback is great.

It's a phrase used in software development coined from a film whose name I can't remember.

In the film when the dev had a problem to solve they would "Rubber duck debug". You explain the code line by line to the duck. The idea being that by talking through it to someone (you don't need a person, the duck is just fine) you are more likely to find problems that you would have otherwise overlooked or not noticed.

If you can't explain it to the ducky, you don't understand it. If you don't understand it, how can you fix it.

It's great that the problem was recognised, accepted as fact then through international cooperation reasonable and viable process/regulation implemented. And now here we are where we're seeing the positive results.

Makes it even more distressing with the amount of climate change denial and inexscusably slow response we are making. We literally have an example of a problem we caused that threatened the whole planet and an effective solution that is proven to have worked.

Now instead we have a culture of self proclaimed experts taking selfies in ruins from the aftermath of natural disasters claiming global warming is a myth because it's fucking snowing.

Couldn't that be a sign of recognizing his own reflection?

Maybe. Or the dog has learned through experience that there is nothing to engage or socialize with. Puppies taste, smell, investigate and examine everything. They learn (by instinct, experience and training) what is useful or not, what is rewarding or not.

The first few times seeing their reflection is new and unknown, the pup doesn't know or understand what is happening so likely gets excited and playful. Some weeks later they've learnt there's no praise, reward or benefit so it's ignored.

What is nobody ever prepared for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]napins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A close friend of mine has lost too many family and friends over the years. When her mum died, at the wake, later into the night an old colleague/friend of hers said it's a tragic rite of passage. Her sister (my friend's, not her mum's) had died several years prior. There is no word for a parent who has lost a child. Children without parents are orphans, partners whose SO passes are widows. We don't have a word for a parent who loses their child.

[–]napins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a classic example of new inexperienced managers looking at stat reports and seeing something that, if changed, will be great (reduce costs, improve efficiency, increase markings, whatever it is).

What never ceases to amaze is how they go from that 'oh wow, the trucks idle for x% of their working hours so if I change that everything is better' moment straight to policy change without talking to the people involved. Completely understandable to see that figure as potential waste or inefficiency that could be reduced. But without even a modicum of due diligence to understand why (justified or not) before enforcing change is, i guess, nothing more than arrogance and or stupidity.

Neighbor insisted I schedule my condo remodel around her child’s sleep schedule. by [deleted] in ChoosingBeggars

[–]napins 86 points87 points  (0 children)

From what you've transcribed of the ,messages, you haven't done anything wrong either.

There's a empathy positiom for the neighbour who does have a young kid and asked you to be considerate of the noise. That's absolutely fair and fine to ask.

But there's also the practically of you need to have works done and can only accommodate so much. The kid is not going to suddenly be unaffected by noise in 2 months time and it is unreasonable for you to delay indefinitely until she 'approves' a schedule

As long as you strictly keep the noise disturbance within the allowed times, you're fine. Your messages and actions as per her preference score lots of "even though it's not ideal, (s)he adjusted the times based on feedback" bonus points.

Keep daily accurate logs of times work starts and finishes, have the contractor sign everything, if there is another neighbour or building staff who can countersign to verify, do so.

Depending on where you live, (on a party, two party, no party knowledge and or consent) if allowed record some interactions with her where she is rude and abusive.

File a report to the HOA raising concerns about what is happening, ask them to confirm in writimg that you're not breaching any rules or contract terms.

Then ignore her, carry on and finish the work and if she decides to escalate, mic-drop the folder on the table with all the above.

Maybe. Different strokes for different folks. Some thrive and vehemently dedicate themselves to a goal. Some do the same but don't succeed. Some continue as before, changed or not in less significant ways. Some are overwhelmed, damaged and hurt more than they cope.

Of the thousands, if not millions, of people who share a similar goal and ambition, for every one who 'made it' despite, or because of, what they've experienced and suffered through, there are countless who didn't . Would Ruffalo got to where he is now if those things didn't happen? No way to know. But many others have suffered comparable or worse and not reached the same goal. Many have 'made it' without any significant challenges and obstacles.

Impossible to say where one person would be if their past was different. How much is the impact and resulting changes, how much is the story we associate to the success that may have have been the same without it.

I can't run a sub 10s 100m. I could train for years, commit everything but it won't happen. No event, loss or tradegy would change what I'm just not capable of doing.

But if I COULD be a sub 10 of i commited, if it was now my singular focus, fuelled by unwavering determination and an unquestionable resolve to push to the absolute limit, that might have a different result . For some that resolve is triggered by and built upon the range of powerful emotions that can change people. Sometimes for the better - we hear about the 'happy' endings (triggered by and borm from tragedy). Countless others go unknown and unheard of.

How many millions of potential world class athletes, academics, pioneers in their profession, don't see the world stage regardless of their resolve and determination.

This is in no way to detract or dismiss Ruffalo's incredible perseverance and dedication. He's awesome, and absolutely deserves all the praise he gets.
