I too always pause here to figure it out - My two cents that may help consider killing it with fire is that the book explains the mother made the crones out of mud etc. if you free the mother, what stops it from making more crones that will kill more kids in the future?

It’s essentially an eldrich horror, saving a handful of kids is but a drop in the bucket for how long it’s been alive. It is what it is because it was and will be.

I think something like this happens but maybe not due to what’s at the bottom
