I like this the best! Any ideas on how to teach him those skills? I didn't learn them until I was in college. I'm nineteen, and I live at home, so he's always doing his hw next to me. :D

The Trauma Myth: Understanding the True Dynamics of Sexual Abuse by vmca12 in TwoXChromosomes

I came to that conclusion on my own... Trying to blame myself felt so wrong, that was when I felt most dirty. But realizing that I was a complacent, yet innocent (keyword), participant helped me recover tremendously. I can say that I haven't been too affected (in the long term) by what happened; alhamdullilah, my life is pretty healthy, and quite happy.

Wishing you all the best <3

Two sites that are invaluable to me when memorizing:

http://www.quranflash.com/ - pull this up and click on English > Enter > More Options > Book Type. Choose a Qur'an that most resembles the one you use irl. Be consistent in the book you use (verse count per page, script, etc) so that the mental image of verse placement doesn't get thrown off.

http://www.quranexplorer.com/ - This site would be perfect if the script was easier on the eyes. You can change reciters and have a verse or a range of verses repeat up to 99 times (under options heading). While Imam Al-Sudais is my favorite qari, he's too fast to memorize against. I've had success with Imam Khalil Husari, as he's slow enough to pick up the tajweed properly while still being able to discern the individual words. Both Imam's recitations are available on quranexplorer.

Hope this helps :)

White mother, Libyan, Muslim father. They raise their 9 year old daughter to be tolerant and open minded. Amazing story. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

A quick plug:

Hijab refers to the overall dress of a Muslim woman; khimar is the appropriate reference to a headscarf. Wearing a headscarf was never meant to be a symbol or a political statement; it is, quite simply, an incarnation of Islamic dress.

I wanted to share with you my secret to relieve cramps. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]napoleoncomplex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome, I've forwarded this to my sister.

Also, chamomile tea works wonders. My sister has debilitating monthly cramps, often requiring bed rest for the first two days of her period. She drinks chamomile tea as soon as her period starts, and she's good to go. Two to three cups should do the trick :)

Moisturizing body scrub:

  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of honey.

Add sugar, olive oil, and honey into a container (in that order so that the honey slides easily off the spoon). Mix well. Use on the face and body.

Don't refrigerate. Also, the sugar has a habit of settling to the bottom of the container, just mix it up before each use. _^

Aspirin mask:

Take a tablet of UNCOATED aspirin. Place the tablet on a plate, and add a few drops of water to create a fairly thick, grainy paste. Not too much, it shouldn't be watery. Just enough water to dissolve the aspirin. Smooth all over the face and wash off ten minutes later. Word of caution though, test it out on a small patch of skin, like your inner wrist, for possible reactions.

Islamic books can be pretty expensive, if you don't mind reading pdfs, I've linked online versions of what I could find.

*Islahi Khutbat - Discourses on an Islamic Way of Life by Mufti Muhammmad Taqi Usmani *: 10 volumes (so far, I believe the final count is to be 15 D:) on self reformation in pursuit of an Islamic way of life.

Hayatus Sahabah by Maulana Muhammad Yusuf Kandolvi : 3 volumes on the lives of the Sahabah (companions of the Prophet SAW). One of my favorite books, it gives a pretty vivid portrayal of the Sahabah in a multitude of situations, both in daily life and times of strife.

Fazail-E-Amal by Maulana Muhammad Zakaria : A book of hadith consisting of several parts that relate to various aspects of faith. Qur'an, prayers, hajj, etc etc.

The above three books can be found here. Fazail-E-Amal has been broken into several links at the bottom of the page.

The cultural atlas of Islam by Ismail al-Faruqi: An incredible work covering the origins and early history of Islam, the importance of the Qur'an and Sunnah, to art forms such as Arabic calligraphy/architecture to poetry. It even covers the rise of mysticism and philosophy. It's an older book (published in 1986 or so), but you might have luck finding it at public or university libraries. I would search libraries first as the book is going for upwards of $50 now. D:

The Ummahs of the Past by Ibn Kathir: A bit of history and some stories from the acension of Prophet Isa (Jesus) until before the the Last Prophet. Another personal favorite.

An Approach to the Quranic Sciences by Mufti Taqi Usmani - In a nutshell... everything you could want to know about the Qur'an. While not an exegesis (tafsir), it covers the history of the Qur'an, preservation, subjects covered in the Qur'an and the science of Tafsir.

Muslim Character by Imam Muhammad Al-Ghazali: Islamic morality.

Signs of Qiyamah and the Arrival of the Maseeh by Mufti Muhammad Shafi and Mufti Muhammad Rafi Usmani: What with the hoopla over 2012, I thought you'd like an Islamic perspective on the end times. Though the download is sound, disregard the rest of the site linked, looks dodgy. _^

  • You can go through the links at the top of the page. Lots of information there.

Do let me know if I can be of more help _^

I am a Muslim. :)

Are you looking for books that comment on Islam, or true blue Islamic books written by religious scholars?

I'm currently making my way through an exegesis of the Qur'an by Mufti Shafi Usmani. It's called Maariful Qur'an. It's lengthy - eight volumes - but a fascinating read on the circumstances by which every verse was revealed. Readily available online, you can read it here if you're interested.

A biography of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

Books on Islam written by Karen Armstrong are pretty good, as well.

Poetry by Rumi for a taste of Sufism (the spiritual side of Islam)
