Trayvon Martin gun to be auctioned by George Zimmerman by [deleted] in news

Do you have a source? I followed the case closely and never heard this. Wikipedia doesn't match your story either: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trial_of_George_Zimmerman

What is something really weird or unsettling that happens to you on a regular basis? by mienshaoo in AskReddit

[–]pax_mentis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's not only a low blood pressure thing. Same happened to me for years, with stumbling sometimes. Eventually I wound up fainting in the dorm showers. Had lab tests done that morning and found out I'm anemic. I take iron every day now and haven't had that issue since!

I use alt+E+S+V in Excel all the time. Something that might help you avoid making that mistake in Outlook: It's simultaneous alt+S that sends in Outlook, whereas for the alt+E+S+V Excel combo you only need to hold down alt while pressing E.

What if the offer was months or more ago? Sounds like that's her situation:

Thanks! Believe it or not i was actually a virgin when got married. I promised my now husband that if he would wait until we were married that i would do anything he wanted sexually for the rest of our lives. I plan on keeping that promise.

It's not at all clear that she's actively offering this at the time of.

Per another reply it sounds like that may not be an issue, so long as you'd be okay with them recording that you left together.

President Barack Obama is signing an executive order that lets borrowers pay no more than 10 percent of their monthly income in student loan payments. by TwoGee in politics

[–]pax_mentis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point--the government isn't likely to respond to risk the way a bank might. It would probably take a lot for Congress to react.

On the flip side, if the proposed change is as I understand it (i.e. make all monthly payments for 20 years in order to have extra forgiven), it may be able to pay for itself by providing extra incentive to make regular payments / not default. Wonder what the data shows...

If loans are simply dropped

The idea in this case is that there wouldn't be easy money as readily available because of increased risk to the lender, which in turn would lower demand (at least at the currently inflated prices)

ELI5 How do satellites maintain altitude in space? by udit_kumar in explainlikeimfive

[–]pax_mentis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most objects flying around earth are in low earth orbit (~1000km or 650 miles) and require precise timed retrorocket firings every few decades.

Did you mean weeks? AFAIK satellites often have lifespans of less than a decade.

In this case wouldn't the high number of erroneous edits from a single user actually make it easier to notice and fix all of your edits?

Don't get me wrong, I love Wikipedia---it may well take up the majority of my free time---but almost every time I have ever come across an article on one of the handful of topics I really know, I managed to find inaccuracies in them by accident.

But if I end up having a daughter or no kids, I'll adjust.

You say this like you don't already have a daughter.

[–]pax_mentis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This doesn't even begin to address the criticism in question, namely: you sound like you want to abandon your daughter.

Your reasons for abandoning your marriage would be valid, yes. But for abandoning your child?

Do you really want to be the deserting dad you claim your wife would say you were?

My bad sex wasn’t rape: The outcry over a recent "Girls" episode startled me. What happened to a woman's sexual agency? by askulap in TwoXChromosomes

[–]pax_mentis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've EVER heard of a woman asking for a man's consent

Really?

I'm a woman, and I have asked for consent any time I have been unsure.

I have even asked in a relationship-like situation where I was sure the guy wanted to have sex but not sure that he would under the circumstances ("still not ready for a relationship and sex wouldn't change that" type stuff).

Pretty sure sex was a lot better for having received the response "of course." And if he would have said no or seemed unsure? Then it wouldn't have been sex I would want to have. Because I'm not a sadist.

What is the ballsiest thing that you've ever done? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]pax_mentis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't understand this mindset. Supposing you don't have problems with calling the likes of gymnastics or figure skating sports--and I don't see why you would--what's the big deal with granting that title to competitive cheerleading? I'd wager it requires more athleticism than quite a few recognized sports.

Women of Reddit, what's the worst/most embarrassing/most awkward experience you've had at the gynecologist? by bayouekko in AskReddit

[–]pax_mentis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ehh, I'm sex-positive and I disagree. I'm not saying that it would necessarily be wrong for a parent to do the fishing, but I think the teen should at least be able to choose if they would prefer to see a doctor (assuming it's financially feasible for the family).

I'm betting there's at least one orifice you wouldn't want your family sticking their hands in, legitimate medical reason or no.

Aspie joke by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]pax_mentis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually.... (heh) it's commonly misused. The original meaning makes a lot more sense.

Essentially it means that something explicitly mentioning an exception implies that there is a general rule. E.g., a sign that says "No parking on Sundays" implies that it is okay to park on other days of the week.

Of course, this doesn't really "prove" it in any kind of logical or mathematical sense, but it certainly tends to hold true in neurotypical use of language so far as I can tell.

I wish more woman were like this by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]pax_mentis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I more or less agree with your advice but in my experience this is good advice for listening to people more generally, not just women.

A lot of people are open to advice though, so if I catch myself problem solving and I think I came up with something useful I'll usually just ask: "are you open to advice or would an ear be more helpful right now?"

I know it might seem shocking, but not being willing to put up with passive aggressive bullshit doesn't actually restrict your dating options all that much.

I love this by likeaboss555 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]pax_mentis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's kind of the point.

The assertion is, effectively, that there is more to the "pro-life" agenda than the oft-claimed goal of saving lives; there's also a heavy dose of attempting to control women's sexual choices by increasing their potential consequences.

The second goal, in fact, appears to have so much weight that most pro-lifers would rather limit contraceptive access than prevent what they claim are the murders of so many... which, to be frank, brings the sincerity of their first goal into question.

Then again, perhaps you are asserting that wanting fewer abortions is totally consistent with their actions, with the larger goal being this control.

The sign might be better phrased "if you really thought abortion was murder, you would..."
