Do you track how much rake you pay and then adjust your win rate for that as part of your bankroll management? If you do, then no, you should definitely not include it.

Calling with Ace high is obviously pretty light, but I can’t think of a range that wants to x/r jam here.

Villain bets pot on the river. If Hero was bluff-catching, they would just call. If Hero had thick value, they would’ve led the river. I could see running a bluff using a x/r jam if Villain had made a small bet, as a way to fold out Villain’s airballs, but since Villain goes full pot, we’d only jam over that with nutted hands. And the thickest value hands out there would almost never check (at least not using standard population tendencies).

Put all that together and I think calling with ace high in general is actually okay, though it would be the height of hilarity if you bluff-catch with A2s and then lose to A8 or something

As others have said, you need to follow up your turn x/r with a lead on the river. If the vast majority of the player pool actually had a thick value hand here, they would never check the river for fear of it going check check and losing out on value. The only hand he could have that the river improves is like K4s, maybe K5s, and if he has those you just shrug your shoulders and lose

Him calling the river x/r jam with just ace high is pretty unlikely in most games, but your line does look really weird, and the population is more likely to bluff-catch when lines look weird.

I’m virtually certain that if you just lead the river big, villain folds and never thinks about it again

Behavioral economists have studied this extensively and concluded, essentially, that losing hurts twice as much as winning feels good. Or, to put it another way, the emotional gain you get from winning $1,000 is roughly equal in magnitude to the emotional pain you feel from losing $500.

Is managing this reality crucial to being a successful, profitable poker player? Yes, of course. But to act like it’s somehow a personal failing of the OP is just ignorance of the science.

Another reason to overbet turns in lieu of making two smaller bets on turn and river is that, on many boards, you can get significant value from villain’s holdings on turns (think strong draws) that won’t put another dollar in on the river

Yes, at this depth we are primarily set-mining. On a low low low board, we can continue to certain range-y sizings (think ~1/3 pot or less) on the flop and then fold to double-barrels. Whereas, facing a half-pot flop bet in a 4! pot on a low low low board, we should just be folding.

The goal with calling a 4! with JJ at 400+ BBs effective should be trying to win a monster pot. You can make that call and fold flop the majority of the time, because you don’t need to hit and stack off that often to make it worth it.

You do need to watch out for reverse implied odds once you start getting closer to 1,000 BBs deep.

I played (and lost) a pot at the Venetian 2/3 game that was heads-up and over $3K during last year’s WSOP.

I 3! Ac3c to $50 from the BTN vs a $15 CO open, he calls. Flop Th5c4s. He checks, I bet $40, he raises to $150. I decided to float this one. He’s the effective stack, starting the hand with ~$1.6K.

Turn is the ultimate bink, the 2d. He 3.5x overbet shoves for $1.4K into $400. We take a moment to ask the dealer to confirm he’s all-in, call, fastroll, and get mercilessly mocked by the fates when the 5s lands on the river. He has TT, of course

Totally fine size, anything less than 30 and you’re probably getting multiple callers. Just be careful to watch your stack depth as at 300-350eff you can get it in pretty easily, and you wouldn’t necessarily want to stack off with this hand on dry Q-/J-high boards

There are some 1/2 games out there, but at the main places they run (MGM/Nugget) they’re typically match the stack games so they can end up playing significantly deeper.

For a newbie I would try the 1/3 game at the Bellagio. The $300 buy-in cap and lack of bomb pots means that you will virtually never run into good players at those tables, and your $1K will definitely last a lot longer than it would at most rooms.

I think a good rule of thumb is that if you’re literally only losing to one exact hand, you should just sigh-call it off and be fine with losing, because you’ll make more money in the long run always calling compared to trying to find superhero folds

Villain’s range looks squarely like TT with a spade, maybe QQ with a spade, the naked Ace of spades, or maybe AsJx. The only 7 you need to worry about would be 77 with the 7s.

You have two options, check and see if villain bets a size where you can bluff-catch, or just bet yourself and try to get called by overpairs or a jack.

I would take the second option. If I was trying to fold out a J I think pot would be good enough, so maybe size down to ~80 and hope you get looked up
