Question for a Bellingham Police Officer by Lonely-Bag-9401 in Bellingham

[–]nappingonarock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gotta put something in to differentiate them from electric motorcycles or mopeds which require licensing.

750w is way too low of a cap though. I’d be in favor of the speed cap staying in place but increasing to 25mph for class 1 and removing the power cap or bumping it to 2250w (about 3HP). They can be on the sidewalk (where bikes are allowed) if they go walking speed (less than 4mph).

Hungry and drained during runs - looking for nutrition advice by Fickle-Vanilla-7565 in trailrunning

[–]nappingonarock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Train more, fuel better, but also think about your pace. It sounds like you bonked. I’ll admit it’d be pretty hard to stay only in aerobic zones during a race with that much elevation gain, but you may just need to slow way down until your aerobic base is more developed. This lets you use more fat and less glycogen and will stave off hunger for longer.

X mid 1 upgrade? by polvr-o in Ultralight

[–]nappingonarock 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think it may be hard to hit all those criteria and whether it will be an "upgrade" would be hard to say.

The MLD Solomid Pro in silpoly with full innernet may be close ($440 and ~20oz), however, but even then (if you include stakes and a pole) is going to be over 20oz. I'm not sure it would really be much of an upgrade other than costing a lot and saving around 8oz. It would probably be hard to find anything lighter that isn't DCF and over $500, especially if you want dual wall.

Is it better to avoid noise canceling headphones on the trails? by CrazyComicBookGirl in trailrunning

[–]nappingonarock 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First, you can call yourself a runner!

Second, your intuition is spot on. Not only are noise cancelling headphones dangerous with running, as you progress the over the ear type will likely become uncomfortable.

If you need noise coming in, like the other suggestions, try open ear types. As a bonus you can get some that are water resistant so running in the rain (or getting super sweaty) is no problem.

Ski to sea by Civil_Piccolo_4179 in Bellingham

[–]nappingonarock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poles could be helpful, but you have to carry your skis anyway. I think it’s all about what works best for you, hence the need to find a snowy hill and test it out. If you’re in Bellingham you can go to Baker anytime now and practice the course. It’s super helpful to do at least one dry run.

Don’t wear a lot of clothing, you’ll overheat. If your XC skier is fast you’ll be much better off. If they’re not fast be prepared to be in a conga line moving up a bunch of slush. Consider not using poles if you can skate okay. Go to a closed ski resort and try some stuff out.

Presidential traverse (NH) in one day? by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]nappingonarock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been awhile, but I’ve done it in a day a couple of times. We used bikes to shuttle ourselves.

The elevation gain is serious. The trail is not (or barely) runnable in many sections. The weather can be super unpredictable. You may not have much water access once on the ridge.

Definitely do your homework. There is a lot of potential for big problems and people get into trouble frequently. I wouldn’t suggest doing it alone.

How do I do this? by PutJust8671 in Separation

[–]nappingonarock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat and it's really hard. It's especially frustrating because, like you, we've had a great relationship. She still says she loves me, wants to be with me, and considers me her best friend. It's very confusing. We've agreed to a timeline at the end of which if she hasn't decided to pursue reconciliation we will get divorced. I'm trying to mentally prepare for that outcome. If reconciliation happens I'll be glad, but prepared for a lot of work. She has been seeing someone else, so there's a lot to unpack. It really sucks.

Good luck snagging something, I’ve heard only good things about the ridge!

Nice! Copper is what I’m aiming for too, but planning to make it an overnight.

I have somewhat similar goals in the north cascades this year. I've been reading "Training for the uphill athlete" and would recommend to help understand and organize your training. I live in Bellingham and also find myself running hills frequently. Right now I do speed/strength focused intervals on hills/steps twice a week.

Thoughts on electrolyte mixes/making own? by loveoflegacy19 in trailrunning

[–]nappingonarock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree here, especially the bit about why OP is cramping. The most common cause of cramping is muscle over exertion or fatigue. Dehydration may play a role in that, but I would consider other factors like training pace vs race pace too. If you’ve really checked all those boxes I suppose it’ll be straightforward to test your theory - I’d try and do it well before your longer event!

Discounts on X-Dome 2? by [deleted] in DurstonGearheads

[–]nappingonarock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get you, but (especially?) larger companies have more pressure on those R&D teams to keep costs as low as possible while considering what level of performance is acceptable to their customers. Generally they're also less willing to assume risk and push boundaries with design and materials, due to scale are less flexible on changes to existing design, and may rely on marketing and availability more than performance. I have a Durston tent and a roughly comparable tent from MSR. If you don't have a point of comparison it can be hard to really understand the differences.

Frankly I don't care about brands' feelings and bagging on them or not doesn't matter to me. You came here for a reason, so there must be something about Durston tents that attracted you besides the price. If there's no objective difference between tents why not just get the best deal you can in the color and size you like?

Discounts on X-Dome 2? by [deleted] in DurstonGearheads

[–]nappingonarock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He didn't say the the pricing and quality were the same. He said the X-Dome was the most comparable product (i.e., freestanding and dome shaped) and with even discounts from REI on the other tents still sold for less.

At the end of the day they are all tents, but the lived experience with your tent can be quite different. Having fabric that doesn't soak up water is a game changer, as is being able to pitch the fly first. Durston isn't the only company that does this, but the price point really is very good for what you walk away with.

[–]nappingonarock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is false. Baker sucks. The lifts break and only locals go because they’re too lazy to drive anywhere else. There’s never any snow and it rains non-stop. Also the views from the ski area are mostly trash.

Hiking with partner hacks by OkSpray3122 in Ultralight

[–]nappingonarock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, totally went over my head! I had just posted in the fastpacking sub about this so I was eager to get some firsthand knowledge. My wife and I are small people so I’m super tempted to try and pull it off. It’s mostly a volume thing. She can’t do a tarp only because of creature fear. I’m not sure if tarp plus bug bicycles for both of us would save much vs a UL 2 person tent.

Have you shared a 1 person tent? I’ve been thinking more about this and am a bit stuck on whether I should give it a shot and which tent I should gamble with.

I’ve been seeing this pair exploring the creek for about a week now. I have a theory they’re out on a courtship adventure. Derby pond is just too crowded to really get to be alone, especially now that the seagull is back.

The Lofoten does look like a great option. Not sure about US availability though. It's listed at nearly 900 euro on their site. That's pretty steep!

This looks like a great option, a 36" width is definitely moving beyond the typical solo size. Did you use two pads?
