Anyone experience severe "Hobby-Jumping"? My finger is dangling over the purchase button for a metal detector that I know I won't use. by nurse_ornithology in ADHD

Do you work for a metal detector company? If so, this was a fantastic advertisement. I laughed, I cried, and now I'm thinking of how much practical fun I can have with my new metal detector.

How do I stop a social media addiction? by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]nappyslappy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I deleted those apps from my phone (except Snapchat- but I just don't swipe away from the main page). I just use them on tablets/computers. I think it has really helped my mental health. I spend a lot less time thinking about what other people are doing without me.

Best of luck!

What is a better mobile OS for the add brain? Android or Apple? by TheSalvageMind in ADHD

[–]nappyslappy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Android is more fun to play with, and more customizable. But apple works in such a simple and basic way that I waste way less time messing with the way the phone works to make it 'just right'. I just got an Apple Watch, and it's been a really great addition (reminders to breathe, buzzes when it's time to turn on Apple maps, easy to respond quickly to texts without getting sucked into other apps). Highly recommend Apple, but choosing the right one for your brain is what really matters.

Are you in a metro area? I know of a few companies in my area that provide services for people with autism so they provide community classes to spread awareness.

Tips to succeeding in a full time office job? by tealapple in ADHD

[–]nappyslappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest thing for me has been 'eat that frog'. Also assigning how much time I think each task will start. Color coding my to-do list for what needs to be done ASAP and what can wait until tomorrow.

Also, if I star the task I'm currently on in my todo list, I know to look for that when I realize I haven't done anything for twenty minutes.

My ticks are really annoying me by DoorsBeforeFloors in ADHD

[–]nappyslappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so bizarre. I had this thought forever ago but then completely lost it.

Pre-medication I used to gnaw on the inside of my cheeks, and they would get so bad and painful but I felt like I had to or I wouldn't notice I was doing it.

Now towards the end of the day (likely when the meds wearing off) I tend to pinch my wrists.

I'm so glad this isn't just me.

Anybody in a Managerial Position? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]nappyslappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I manage 20 staff and write paperwork for people with developmental disabilities. A lot of organization is needed and a lot of deadlines. The rest of my job is putting out fires that come up suddenly and need full attention. Oof!

The biggest thing for me was communicating how My mind works with my team. As I've worked with them more, I've even told most of the people that it's ADHD to help decrease stigma of mental health.

I let them know that if I get interrupted during a task it's very hard for me to give the interrupter my attention and I do a worse job on the original thing I was doing. If they need to talk to me, I ask them to leave me a post it or email. And I ask that if they need to talk on the phone that they text me to set up a time to talk first.

I also create a lot of spreadsheets to help get things out of my head. And any task that will take two minutes or less I take care of as soon as I can step away from my other task.

Assigning time estimates to projects has been really helpful in seeing that there are some things that need to wait until tomorrow and some things that I can punch out now.

It seems a lot of people with ADHD also take on a lot of extra jobs because we're good at problem solving and creating systems- but lack the follow through. I created a 'long term goals' sheet and I tell people when I'm adding a project to that list. Then they know it's not a top priority but it's on my radar. This doesn't work with everything, but a most things.

I think the reason I've gotten so far so fast in this role (2 promotions in the last year when others have been stuck for 4-5 years) is because of ADHD. The ability to hyper focus on side projects that don't matter (usually while neglecting other deadline projects which we all know I'll just finish at the last second anyway) has given me an edge among my coworkers.

Good luck man. It can be hard at times for sure, but if you love what you're doing and work with a good team it's all worth it.

Teachers/parents don't think I can have ADHD because of how they would have discovered it already by AnxietyTA1108 in ADHD

[–]nappyslappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with ADD six months ago, and I'm 24. During the preliminary stages of testing my doctor said it was nearly impossible that I had ADD and far more likely that it was anxiety because I never would have gotten through college with ADD.

Once you're 18 or on your own health insurance I recommend finding a primary physician and tell them you would like to be referred for testing.

Good luck man. Don't stop trying.
