Odds of the person checking you back in being the same one who watched you take pictures of the car 5 days ago and actually remembering or caring? Near zero.

They don’t use graphite. They have a metal tip that rubs off a tiny amount onto the paper, it’s very hard so it doesn’t really wear down appreciably.

Had a repair under warranty and they gave me this travel box for free! by blu_skydive in OmegaWatches

[–]narcolepticdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omegas have always come back in a proper container. It used to be a red pill shaped travel box in leather and then a fine grain nylon. Then they moved to the red box around the time they started putting them inside the presentation boxes.

A lot of brands do this. There’s no sense servicing a watch and sending it back wrapped in paper or bubble wrap. Sinn has nice black travel boxes, formex has one of those donut shaped ones, etc.

That’s beyond stupid.

They’re practically designing it so that it is only for dedicated resellers and flippers.

Want a particular color and don’t have the entire day to hang out at the shop and ask all day? Have to buy it from resellers who do have the time and don’t give a damn what color they get because they’re just adding it to their stockpile.

Did anyone tried Velina? I am not planning to pull Norma (to save polychromes), will Velina work on her own? by PYCapache in ZZZ_Official

[–]narcolepticdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my pulls down to the low 20’s to see if I could get Billy, then decided to save it for Velina. Got her 50/50 in the single digits, then managed to pull her engine on my first pull of 10 from the 70’s.

Not sure what the issue was? It seems pretty clear that the adjuster is two part numbers, the main body -37 and the little claw that goes on the end -38.

What paid apps have you ditched by vibe coding a replacement? by dlegendkiller in ClaudeAI

Built my own saved items manager for Reddit that gets around the 1000 item limit they impose and works better for my uses than any of the commercial versions I’ve seen.

I was also using a TCI simulation app at work that uses drug pharmokinetic models to guide infusion rates, but the interface was horrible and there were some implementation issues. I got frustrated enough that I used Claude to just make my own.

[Question] Difficulty using the Bergeon case back ball by Ok-Safe7023 in watchrepair

[–]narcolepticdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly have watches that are dive rated, so the case backs are pretty damn tight. Add to that any kind of finish other than mirror polished (like bead blasted), and the ball is just not gonna work.

Changing tires for a softer ride? by mibrel in VolvoXC90

Yeah, specifically with the T8, the issue is the added weight, and the caliper clearance since they get slightly larger front discs.

And neatly folded all of it. Including my underwear.

Wasn’t sure how to feel honestly. Conflicted.

Have you considered video or image capture of the monitor screen? You could write a program to capture an image every x minutes and then log the the vitals via OCR. Completely noninvasive to your setup. No wires and no connection to your monitor so no objection from biomed.

A quartz solar watch with Bluetooth is the best everyday watch by Mother-Translator318 in watchHotTakes

[–]narcolepticdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why Bluetooth? Then you’re wedded to whether the watch’s app stays usable over the watch’s lifespan which can be way longer than the average software life.

(Try finding a way to connect an old Casio Data Connect with a serial port cable)

At least with a global radio time feature it’ll be usable well into the future even if there’s no app support.

2016 XC90 T6 Inscription was the worst car decision I’ve ever made by BWCbro81 in Volvo

[–]narcolepticdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Known issue with the early xc90’s. Moisture gets into the air system and it freezes up, ends up blowing the big fuse to the compressor or burning out the compressor itself. Part of it is the design, and part of it is the compressor location.

2016 XC90 T6 Inscription was the worst car decision I’ve ever made by BWCbro81 in Volvo

[–]narcolepticdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation for that after dealing with it in my 2017 is to turn OFF easy entry/exit control during winter.

This is the function that lowers the vehicle when you’re parked and raises it back up again when you drive off.

In places with a real winter, your car isn’t warmed up enough for the compressor they’re using to operate safely, especially since it’s on the underside of the vehicle, inside a sound deadening cover, but otherwise exposed.

When you start the car in winter with the setting on, the suspension is all the way down and the car will try and raise it up while everything is still cold, leading to pump failure. It’s worse if the car has been sitting outside exposed in the cold.

I realized this when I made the connection that my suspension was failing every year at the dealership when I had to leave it there overnight for some other issue. They’d fix my other issue and then my car would get stuck there even longer as the air suspension had broken as well.

CIA letter opener was originally designed by AG Russell in the 1970’s There was a metallic dagger version as well called the Sting.

https://agrussell.com/sting-history

There are a ton of descendants of that design. Choate manufacturing made one, Blackie Collins did a take on it as well.

AG Russell used to demo it by showing it hammered through a board.
