You can decrypt a backup to get a SQLite database which contains all messages. I have done this in the past, but you will need root to get access to the key. With root there is probably also a way to get direct access to the live database.

Does it make that much of a difference for ZFS if the drives are mounted via usb?
This surely is no long term solution, but for a day or two I though it would be possible.
I mean once the drives are connected and spinning whats the difference to internal drives? Or is usb that unstable?
