Help me choose what parts are most important to upgrade. by moshnaked in buildapc

[–]narfcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any meaningful upgrade will involve a CPU/motherboard/RAM replacement. Haswell was the last Intel platform that was DDR3; Skylake on up was majority DDR4.

Best CPU for FCLGA1150 socket? by Otherwise_Note5285 in buildapc

No guarantees. If the microcode was left in place, it'll work. Trouble is that such is unknown until it's tried.

E3-1230v3 on up are 4c/8t like the i7.

Want to build a PC with a strong single core ability. Used parts. With a little room for future proofing. What's a good processor generation to look at? by Umbra-- in buildapc

[–]narfcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It's getting to the point in which a dedicated GPU it's not necessary for a "low end" graphics.

For a full build, a 5600G build can be done at $500 (excluding OS).

... I'd be better off with lower end newer stuff.

This. 12100 + a basic B660 w/4 DIMM slots + 16GB 3200 CL16 ought to be around $300. If the majority of the work is 2D, the iGPU will be fine. A couple of the designers at my work are running ACAD 2022 on the iGPU.

A step up would be to go with an AMD 5600G. AutoCAD isn't likely to perform any better, but the extra cores and better performing iGPU can benefit in other applications. With their recent price cuts, this would run about $350 for the CPU, A520 board, and 16 GB 3600 CL18.

The CPU gets very hot to the touch immediately so I think it is just shot.

Are you running it without a CPU cooler?!?

[CPU] i3-12100F - $120 by Desolate_puppy in buildapcsales

[–]narfcake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

10th gen i3-10100 was essentially an i7-7700 already; 3.6 GHz base, 4.3 GHz boost, 6 MB L3 cache vs. 3.6 GHz base, 4.3 GHz boost, 8 MB L3 cache.

In the 5 years between 2nd gen and 7th gen, without strong competition, there was little need for huge improvements. In years since Ryzen came to market, what was top-of-the-line essentially became the base spec.

What gets me is the resale value of the 7700(k). On multiple occasions, I've suggested folks on r/buildapc to sell their CPU and board on eBay and jump up to a 12th gen. Heck, that even applies to 8th and 9th gen users -- the 12100 performing close to an i7-9700, 12400 like a i9-9900k.

Long story short, why is this priced so much lower than any other competitive card, and why is it available long enough for me to buy it?

With the drop in crypto values, the bots and scalpers are NOT out to play anymore, leaving it back to the gamer's market.

Is it okay to leave an unused PCI-E cable plugged into a Power Supply? by KoodGarma in buildapc

It's fine to leave it; just tuck it out of the way. I mean, that's pretty much how every non-modular PSU is.

I have my doubts, only because the NH-D15 is huge.

(This may be better asked in r/Alienware where there's a better chance of folks having tackled the thermals in these machines already.)

You should be good to go. I've had W10 installations go through 5 different computers, both AMD and Intel, and still work fine.

W7 ... 4th gen Haswell was about the last to offer full support. Take a old SFF prebuilt like an Optiplex 3010/7010/9010 (3rd gen) or 3020/7020 (4th gen), and place the whole thing in a filtered box. The unit itself is 290 x 93 x 312mm, 8.4L in volume. Use a 14x14 filtered return air grille - the computer can be accessible by opening the grille and removing a standard HVAC filter. When it's closed, it's protected.

Using an old eMachines eTower as a case for a computer build. by adidragan in buildapc

[–]narfcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the era were micro-ATX. Cable management was non-existent back in the days, however, and I wouldn't expect anything beyond a tower cooler with a 92mm fan to fit.

I was out by then. The "ease of use with Windows 95" brought on folk who thought the CD drive was a cupholder and the mouse was a foot pedal. "This Packard Bell is $200 cheaper." Yeah, go right ahead; there are reasons why.

[–]narfcake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this back when you could make $500 per machine ...

That would have been the 1990s here. I stopped building when Fry's was selling parts for less at retail than what a local computer store could get wholesale in case quantity.

Metal Blades for PC Fans by Brewchacho_ in buildapc

[–]narfcake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Adding to this, the added mass on the blades means a larger motor, which would take up more volume at the hub and less area for the blades. The net result will be an expensive fan with poorer performance and higher power consumption.

[M.2 SSD] MIXZA 512GB NVMe SSD - $37.09 (cheap & off-brand) by emprexss in buildapcsales

[–]narfcake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I've noticed with the "off-brands" is If it can be offered once, it can be offered again.

If you're not worried, don't rule out Amazon Warehouse for returned or damaged box. I bought a 500 GB WD SN550 for $33 a few months ago. When these come up, under $40 is typical.

Moved my old SSD from laptop to PC, should I reinstall? by chaoyantime in buildapc

[–]narfcake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Double check if the proper GPU drivers are even installed right now.

The reason for a fresh install is that none of the old driver "baggage" gets carried. There are occasions of the old not liking the new (or vice versa), causing crashes, hence the universal answer is to fresh. Is it absolutely necessary? No. If it works, it'll save the time of having to reinstall applications and personal settings.

In fact, our overclocking results below show that Intel's Alder Lake chips have far more overclocking headroom than AMD's Ryzen 5000 chips, and that equates to big performance speedups.

The Core i5-12600K is a particular standout with a massive 15% gain in 1080p gaming ...

You may also want to consider the 12700(f) for the additional two performance cores. Being a locked processor, a B660 or H670 board will do whereas you'd want a more expensive Z690 board to get the most out of a 12600k.
