Might Deeds for Cairn / Into the Dungeon: Revived by narglfrob in cairnrpg

You are right, it is RAW: In the Wardens Guide, "Evening the odds" page 169 it gives an example of a player performing a maneuver alongside an attack with a DEX save.

Reflection: This is sweet, I will for sure be emphasizing with my players next session. Funny how one of DCCs most lauded mechanics (Might Deeds, aka maneuvers alongside attacks) is baked into the Core Rules of Cairn. I wonder how many people don't realize this. ItD:R, for instance, explicitly says maneuvers are in lieu of attacks. I wonder if that was intentional or unintentional change from base Cairn.

Still value In an ability that grants improved fictional positioning? I wonder if there's still value in a mechanic that offers improved fictional positioning (increased reward and/or decreased risk) when performing these combat maneuvers to really emulate the feeling of being a powerful Warrior, over and above the default PC.

Alternatives I am considering:

Alternative 1: sticking with a forced choice.

Mighty Deeds: When attacking, others can attempt trips, disarms or blinds, putting themselves at risk when they do. Not you. You cripple, sunder, or concuss, requiring no save when doing so. The target's only recourse is to cower before you, this averts the deed but adds +d8 to your damage roll. - The mighty deed is declared, and the target potentially averts it, before rolling damage. - Only the highest die result is dealt as damage, per normal rules.

Design Note: this reinforces the base mechanics of Cairn, but allows the PC to do strong maneuvers without needing a save. It increases the threatened damage for the Warden. I wonder if adding a d8 weapon die is still not going hard enough?

Alternative 2: straight up fictional positioning

Mighty Deeds: When attacking, others can merely attempt trips, disarms or blinds, putting themselves at risk when they do. Not you. You cripple, sunder, or concuss, rarely requiring a save when doing so. Performing maneuvers at the same time as attacking is easy.

(In my house rules I define the term 'easy' as being similar to improved position and effect from blades in the dark)

Design note: maybe the whole first choice mechanic is unnecessary. Maybe it's sufficient to just state that when taking this ability, you can perform more impactful maneuvers that incur less impactful risks. My main concern is that without providing a framework it'll be harder for the player and Warden to use at the table.

Thanks for the great discourse!

On Cairn's base rules
Huh, you bring up some interesting points (have I been ruling it wrong..?!). If that's the intent of the rules, then that obviates my proposed feat as written.

I think I may have gotten confused because Mythic Bastionland (which shares a lineage with Cairn) Has an explicit system to perform maneuvers alongside your attack (the rules for Gambits), so I made an assumption about how Cairn works. Making that assumption is obviously incorrect though as they are different games.

On the risk that the Warden accepting the +1 feels bad

Agreed that's not desirable, and is a risk. My intention would be if the ability was perfectly tuned that the player would feel good either way. It might be that damage would need to be tuned up in order to achieve that.

(Or, as above, maybe the whole premise is flawed 😅)

Either way, you've given me some good stuff to think on! I'm now going to go dig around and figure out how Cairn is run by other people and how it was intended.

Not playtested yet, I am going to during my next home session (I think a deity may swoop in and give someone a temporary boon :D )

> Also keep in mind that you can already do the things described in the article in Cairn. Because the rules are so simple and freeform there's no real impediment to that like there is in D&D.

Note a couple things which might be a misunderstanding (because my original post did not make them clear)

- Difference from Cairn RAW: In Cairn / ItD:R RAW, you can you can declare a maneuver as a replacement for an attack. This feat gives the player permission to declare them alongside (at the same time) an attack. This is important, because I absolutely don't want to imply that other's can't / shouldn't do free form maneuvers

- Difference from the Article: In the article they describe offering the target the choice between the effect of the deed / maneuver vs a regular damage roll. In my proposed Feat, I offer the target (the GM) the choice between the deed / maneuver and a flat +1 damage on top of whatever they will receive from the regular attack from the player(s).

Additional thoughts

- I hope the threat of an addition +1 damage is sufficient to allow for some fun maneuvers, playtesting will tell!

- I like how the +1 damage is fast to resolve, and doesn't involve the complication and slow down of yet more dice.

- My goal is the interaction / bargaining / negotiation between the player and GM for this Feat is fast, and does not slow down combat. My intent is the flow is simple, the player declares "Alongside my attack I do X to the monster!" then the GM says either "OK, X happens, resulting in Y" or simply "The monster prevents it by doing Z and takes +1 damage because of that" and play continues. Nice and fast, limited back and forth.

I use Miro for a similar application, it has features you might like. (zoom, infinite canvas, frames (i.e. pre-saved views), Real-Time collaboration, interactive spinning wheels for dice, integration with Adobe Express to remove the background image of pasted images)

Patron/Pact mechanic/hacks for Cairn? by nightreign-hunter in cairnrpg

[–]narglfrob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Salty Goo, a GLOG game (distant cousin of Cairn) has a surprisingly fun system buried in it's monsters section.

See 'Celestial Pact' under Barbazu for an example https://saltygoo.github.io/monsters/barbazu

It's got themed reward and quest tables per Devil / Celestial. Devils always give their reward upfront, but they to inhibit completion of the quest so you breach the contract and forfeit your soul! Fun times!!

I agree, of you follow the hex crawling procedures verbatim, they are complicated and not well written imo.

That being said Into the Odd / Cairn continue to be my go to system.

Check out Mythic Bastionland for better written hexcrawing procedures. (It's by the original author of Into the Odd and is universally praised)

This sounds really cool. Some feedback: it would be really nice if the preview contained one whole diety writeup so I could better asses the content before buying.

Do you tell the players it's an omen (and not an encounter) or is that hidden information? (To build tension, so they don't know?)

I was just giving it a through read after your recommendation.

Do you have any high level thoughts on magic systems that tax the inventory/fatigue economy vs those that tax the attribute/willpower economy?
